My favorite part of May’s outing was just one walk.

Nice to see a strong bounceback from May against the same team that got to him his previous start.
I’m impressed by Colvin. He’s kept it together despite a difficult beginning to the season. He got a ton of groundouts last night, let’s hope that’s a trend.
Someone else pointed this out in another thread, but Gose has done well over his past ten games. Let’s hope he continues it. By the way, check out his picture on milb.com. I love how the camera’s flash reflects off the sticker on his cap onto his forehead!

Great night all around, Hewitt’s BA is rising. Anyone how how fast Colvin is pitching?

Gillies has also done well over his last ten games. These guys both jumped a level and are young for their respective levels. It’s encouraging.

Thought I’d put some numbers to the comment about Gose/Gillies and their last 10 games
Gose – 275/370/325 – 5 runs, 12 K (30% K rate), 5 BB, 8/3 SB/CS
Gillies – 262/295/381 – 6 runs, 9 K (21%), 2 BB, 1/1 SB/CS
Not great, but progress is what’s important, and there is progress

so if one of these two guys had to be picked right now as the Phillies CF of the future who would it be

Gose v. Gillies – hard to call right now. Gose has more upside, but Gillies seems a more sure bet. If Gillies were walking more, I’d pick him, but right now, I’d have to say it’s a “pick ’em” with Gose, perhaps, getting a microscopic advantage, but reasonable people could differ on this view.

I think Gose has a better future . Better arm , better on defense . He is younger so his offensive game will take some time to develop .

Between Aumont, May, Cosart, Colvin and maybe even Shreve there’s some reason for optimism about the big club getting some solid, if not better, major league starters over the next 2-4 years. That’s pretty encouraging considering they’ve traded 3 quality pitching prospects in the last year.

May and Cosart are on the fast track – these are guys who could turn into legit. big league 1s or 2s – stray comments from the team suggest that Cosart is the golden boy, however. There’s a lot of hope for Aumont, but he’s still in adjustment mode.
Behind them are Hyatt, Colvin, Shreve and Ramirez – all intriguing.

So what’s the deal with the Melvin Dorta & Brandon Pinckney the two 3B for Reading? Hitting .176 and .230 respectively. Is there any reason that Overbeck should not be promoted? (I am certainly not in any hurry to see him go, but …)

With all the comments about Hyatt being too old at 24 pitching @ High A Clearwater against 20 year olds , what about Jayme Moyer @ 47 pitching to 30 year olds in the Majors ? Moyer should dominate

Jeff Crupper – since you are the man on the scene, can you kindly provide us with any interesting anecdotal information about Cody Overbeck that the statistics cannot tell us? Are the homers tape measure jobs? Is everything hit a bullet? Can he field his position? How is he on the base paths? Stuff like that.

Anyone have a guess when we’ll see a couple of move ups for the top pitching prospects?
Not to the big club, obviously, but within the system.

I have a feeling Hamels will be gone as soon as he hits his FA year. Looking forward to the young guns to take some major steps forward this and next year.

i would guess the all star breaks of their respective leagues would be when cosart or may could get called up if they keep up this pace

Dom made the hot sheet this week over at BA. Number 3 on the list. Said he’s the best right fielder not named Mike Stanton. I can live with that, haha.

Just a little humor on the Hyatt/ Moyer age thing . Unless someone has stats on a 24 yr old pitcher VS hitters @ 19 / 20 / 21 / 22 /23 , I will just sit back and enjoy his success this year.
At some point in his career he will prove all these doubters wrong . His numbers will do all the talking .

I’m thinking that with the Overbeck promotion, the org should also bump Bushini up to Clearwater. My guess is that they will probably wait a few more weeks just to get a more significant sample size. And I doubt it means anything, Overbeck has walked five times in the last ten games – from what I’ve heard, Overbeck likes to hack so it’s most likely that they are pitching around him.

Dom, someone with four years of pitching experience in the SEC should be able to dominate guys a couple of years out of high school. It’s just that simple. Experience, and the level of competition you experienced, matters. Another way to think of it – in college football, the juniors and seniors are usually (key word – don’t forget it) bigger, stronger, and technically more proficient than the freshmen. It’s the same idea.
That being said, I’m pretty sure people have researched this issue and the conclusion is that older players do better against younger players than they do against people their own age.
On Hyatt specifically, I think how well he is doing is fantastic. But, as Catch usually says, I’m not going to get excited until I see him do it in AA. Trevor May, however, is someone to get excited about.

I would think there is nobody in AA that is holding Overbeck back. I was suprised he did not start in AA. Buschini and Barnes will probably get moved up to Clearwater at the All-star break. Harold Garcia might hold Barnes back if he gets healthy.
I really hope they move Hyatt up to AA, for nothing else, so Dom can be happy.

Cody has hit some tape measure shots for sure this year, and he just has a sweet swing. When he hits a home run there is usually no doubt the second that he hits it that the ball is gone. On the basepaths I’d say he is average for his size. He’s a bigger guy so he’ll never move around the bases like Gose or Myers. He fields his position fine with just two errors on the season .976%.
I’ve lined up an interview with him that i hope to have up on the site sometime next week. The team is on the road so they don’t return home until Monday. If anyone has ideas for questions you can email me at clearwaterthreshers@jeffcrupper.com

Gose is certainly on a hot streak on the basepaths and defensively.

How about hot streak after he had a slow start?
He’s somewhere in the middle of his poor early play, and his recent hot streak.

With Aumont getting bombed, over around 3 innings, the relievers put in behind him raise a question. If Reading is going to add a 5th starter soon, it will not likely be Taubenheim, Ennis, or Stutes, as they were the relievers. I had thought they would be the main candidates from the Reading roster. So maybe they do add somebody from Clearwater.
Lakewood- “Mets” pitcher Brandon Moore had 12 K’s and a reliever 1, so Lakewood compiled some K’s. Some players who don’t usually StrikeOut- Barnes 0 for 3 with 3K’s, Ruf 0 for 3 with 2 K’s , also Valle,Castro with 2 K’s, Hewitt 1 for 3 with 2 K’s and a HR for the hit. Santana 1 for 2 with a K, James with a K. The only non StrikeOut people were Buschini and Villar.

Hyatt has come up slowly through every level. He is good and reliable. Not flashy but steady. Shows his maturity and also the fact he is good.
Who knows he might be another Jamie Moyer and every team needs a guy like that. Although he does show a better fast ball.

River – I don’t know what you’re talking about. Hyatt hasn’t gone slowly. He played and dominated short season ball last year and then jumped a level to go to Clearwater – he is going through the system as fast as the Phils will ever let a player go through the system and he’s probably almost ready to be promoted again. If he’s slow, what does that make everyone else?

Sorry you misunderstood, what I meant some players are sent up to fast and to much pressure is put on them. I think he is going at a good pace. Sorry I did not make that clear enough.
