Reading Roster Moves

Outfielder Quintin Berry, who has played just one game this season and has missed the last two weeks of the season with an infection was activated today from the disabled list.  To make room on the roster, INF Keoni DeRenne was placed on the DL with a right shin contusion.  Additionally, 27 year old RHP Ty Taubenheim was placed on the Reading roster.  Reading had been down a pitcher since Bj Rosenberg went on the DL about 10 days ago.  Taubenheim, 6’5, 255, spent last season at Indianapolis (AAA) going 7-9 with a 3.65 ERA in his 19 starts.

  3. So, can Overbeck be a legit prospect based on his bat alone? He’s never been a good defender but can he help someone ala a Greg Dobbs type player?

  4. Not a legit prospect in as much as I don’t know if Greg Dobbs was a legit prospect either (and Dobbs was a far better minor league hitter). But Cody hits for real power even prior to this year and I couldn’t rule him out completely. But winning an MLB bench job anymore is like hitting the lottery.

  5. Well, when a guy is still 23 and really starts to hit for power, as Overbeck has, I’d guess I’d like to see it play out a little longer before I draw definitive conclusions about how good of prospect he might be. If he ends the year hitting .300 at Reading with 15 homers in 280 ABs, don’t you think we’d all alter our views on whether or not he is a prospect? A lot of really good major league players scuffled for a year or two in minor after college before the light went on. Do you think that people knew Mark Reynolds might be this good his first year or so in pro ball? Not a chance.

  6. Mark Reynolds is on another planet of power. The problem with Overbeck is that his K/BB ratio is still poor. A player can get hot with that approach, but what about when the league adjusts their scouting reports? Overbeck’s ISO was very good even when he hit .230 so this power surge isn’t a complete surprise. But it’s still a small sample.

  7. Dom Brown with a huge game at Reading. Gilles seems to be turning it around as well.

  8. Brown with a monster game today. Anyone know why May hasn’t pitched since April 20? Haven’t seen a reason for that on here.

Brown looks like he’s really coming together this year.

  10. Anyone else notice that Tyson Gillies is quietly turning it on in Reading?

5 multi-hit games in his last 10 and he’s hitting .308 over that period with an .829 OPS. Still not really walking and only 3 extra base hits but its an improvement. Hopefully, the first month was an adjustment to a new league/level and he’ll continue to heat up.
