In Reading, Brad Lidge was throwing 89 on the Stadium gun. Can someone who was at the game say what Strasburg, Storen or Cisco was throwing for comparison?

The stadium gun had Cisco at 84-86 and Strasburg at 94-95. I wasn’t paying close attention to Storen, but I believe he was 90-91. Gun seemed slow, considering the effectiveness of all four pitchers and their expected velocities.

Thanks, sherlockjr. Lidge says the Reading coaches had him at 92 (not 89). Seems possible, the stadium gun was slow, by the numbers you gave.

Cisco did well but how much longer can they keep Strasburg down especially since they are in the race. (Same with the Marlins and Stanton)
The radio guys keep calling for a trade. Cupboard is bare except for Brown and that isn’t going to happen.
I took a lot of crap this winter about not planning or 2012 when 2010 hadn’t started. I may be old but I knew leaving
your self exposed to injuries is a sure way to tempt the
“baseball gods”. Now there are No options. The rest of the East will improve and Brown is our only hope.

I enjoy seeing how well Brown is doing. He’s not hitting home runs, but he’s hitting for a very high average and he is hitting for power (lots of double). If you go back through the history of baseball, a lot of truly great home run hitters started out as high average, most doubles hitters and then blossed into true sluggers a few years later (examples include Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, and Ken Griffey). So, let’s go out on a limb and say, for argument’s sake, that Brown is ready to be promoted next year. The problem the team has, I think, is that, if Werth leaves (50/50 chance), the team has too many left-handed bats in the line-up. I think the way this might be resolved, however, is a platoon with Ibanez and Francisco in left – we might get a lot more productivity from that position that way.

I expect they plan on Brown being Ibanez’s replacement in 2012. If Werth leaves and they don’t sign a stop-gap RH OFer, it is much more likely that Francicso/Brown would platoon in RF than Francicso/Ibanez would platoon in Left.
If we have learned anything from Manual from his years with the Phillies, it’s that he goes with a veteran over a young guy every time.

See that Hewitt K’d 3 times but still improved his BB/K ratio by also taking a walk.

They will not platoon Ibanez and Fransisco in left. Makes no sense for a couple of reasons. One being, they will not promote a AA player to a full time job in RF while paying Ibanez 12mil to platoon with a player that will have to pay another 2 mil after arbitration. The second being that Ibanez and Fransisco do not have platoon splits. At best, Brown comes up to platoon with Fransisco in RF, mid-season 2011.

Right Mike it makes sense to play guys who can’t play.

Dickie Noles was in Reading last night and gave a report on WIP. He said Strasburg was around 97 and Lidge 93. He said Lidge’s fastball actually looked harder than Strasburg and was exploding on the hitters. Schwimlocity anyone?

Having read the comments, I agree with the Francisco/Brown possible platoon in right field – that makes much more sense.
On Charlie playing veterans over younger guys, I don’t necessarily agree with that, although he does like to give experienced players the benefit of the doubt, which is smart and fair. I think the one thing that drives Charlie (aside from wanting players who give 100 percent – a must for him), is that he favors HITTING and performance first, and that’s one reason I love the guy.

The really big stories last night were Scott Mathieson’s 15 pitch, two strike out, save for the Pigs. How long can they keep him down on the farm? And how weak Romero looked using slow junk and an 87 mph fastball to get through an inning in SF. His days might be numbered if that’s all he has left in the tank. The night before Bastardo looked sharp at 93 mph. I would send Herndon back to the Angels and release Romero to make way for Lidge and Mathieson and keep Bastardo.

My point with Manual favoring veterans over young players is that he leans towards guys with proven track records vs. guys without a history. Its one of the reason why established guys love playing for him.
I’m a big fan of Charlie and have been called an apologist on other sites many times but he can be loyal to a fault at times.

Mathieson’s dominant effort in Rochester does get lost a bit in the boxscores. From all accounts, he had explosive stuff yet again. It’s worth noting, however, that he hadn’t pitched in three days as a result of poor weather and lop-sided games.

r.b. good report on mathieson. he should be up. i ,d give herndon a little time though. werth will sign with the phils, the trick is to have a team pick up ibanez and bring up demonic. i,m glad monty,s approach to 140 mil is finally approaching reality, as in 20 mil more to win is worth it.

It would be a hard sell to let Werth go and to replace him with Francisco. I have not seen anything from Francisco to warrant a starting gig on a World Series contender. I have to believe that after all the Phillies have placed in the D. Brown basket that they will give him every chance to be the starter in right. The PR position will be far superior and for that matter the results hopefully will be as well. They can at least sell the failure to sign Werth as making way for the franchise’s brightest young star. If Francisco is a starter or a platoon mate with Brown the brass will be judged far more harshly. There is a lot of pressure for everyone in the organization for D. Brown to succeed. As a Phillie fan, I am praying for it.

As I’ve said before, Matheson will not come up before he can show that he can pitch on back to back days. They tried it once with him so far and he had terrible control in the second game. Let’s see if he pitches tonight, and if so, how he does. Honestly though, Villereal, coming back from TJ surgery and a solid major league veteran when healthy, might get the call before Matheson because he looks like he’s throwing the ball well. As for Dom Brown, he’s playing well but at the same time I don’t think he’s forcing the Phillies to find a place for him next year. Lastly, if Lidge gets activated Friday as expected, maybe they’ll put Herndon on the DL with a bruised “something”. I’m not sure what else they’ll do. Blanton could be coming off the DL on Monday himself. Bastardo seems to be doing better now but has options but I can’t imagine they have confidence in JC yet… They’re definitely not releasing JC but they might DL him again if they can’t trust him yet.

One other option if we wanted to keep Werth – if Brown is ready next year – would be to trade Victorino (he has a pretty reasonable 2 year/$17m contract after this season) and play Werth in CF until (hopefully) Gillies is ready in 2012/13. Even if Brown is not ready, they could just bite the bullet for one year of Ibanez or – if Brown is a mid-season call-up – eat a chunk of his salary to send Ibanez back to the AL.
Perhaps – in addition to getting Aumont/Gillies/Ramirez – Amaro moved Lee because 1) he figured he should be able to get to October baseball without him, and 2) they are choosing to take the hit on the payroll NEXT year, after they re-sign Werth (and have to deal with one more year of Ibanez’s contract).

Anyone have an opinion on Brian Gordon? His numbers and performance look good in Lehigh Valley. He’s overlooked as a prospect because he’s 30-31, though he is late to the pitching game having been converted to the mound from the outfield.

JC Ramirex had one bad inning where he let up four runs with two outs, otherwise pitching well. 4ks through 4IP, all swinging.

I am not sure if it is deemed appropriate, but since we are talking Phillies’ outfield prospects, here is a recent article link regarding Michael Taylor and recent farm hand. We’re not going to rush Brown to the majors. If we wanted someone up to be a 5th OF, it’d be Mayberry because he’s absolutely earned it at this point. Let Brown get some more experience in Reading and then let him see some action in Lehigh before the end of the year. No way we see him in a Phils uniform until 2011 at the earliest.
I hope Mathieson can go tonight and prove that the back-to-back isn’t a problem for him going forward. I agree that we should give Romero a few more appearances and if it’s not happening, DFA him. Bastardo can hold it down as our LHP and with Lidge and Mathieson, I really like the possibilities in the pen. It’s nice to see things finally looking up. Happ and Blanton should be back before too long, and you have to imagine that this offensive slump won’t last much longer…FINGERS CROSSED.

What makes us think he’s not ready? Well, the reasons you gave for him being ready are ridicuolous. Spring Training? That is not a barometer anyone would follow to judge if someone is ready for the bigs. He’s played a grand total of 51 games above A ball. He’s a top prospect, but there just isn’t enough there to say he’s ready.

Also meant to comment on your Ramirez comment. Just because someone gives up four runs doesn’t mean he’s pitching poorly. ERA is not the sole thing to determine success. Someone pointed out he had 4 swinging strikeouts, so he’s missing bats. Do you know how the runs were scored, bloops, bleeders, we don’t know, but we do know he’s missing bats and that’s more important to me than the ERA.

I’m a big Mathieson fan as well, but just going tonight and getting the job done will not prove anything. I can’t see the Phillies bringing him up until he shows consistent, repeated ability to go multiple days in a row. Major league bullpens get blown out for use all the time and they would not be doing him or themselves any favors by bringing him up until they know he can handle a major league bullpen role.

Patrick: Not sure many are suggesting they bring Brown up this year. I agree is basically out of the question. The real question is what they do with him next year if Werth departs.

At this time, there really is no reason why Domonic Brown should be the full-time starting RF at the beginning of 2011. He is not dominating AA. He has not faced the experienced junk ballers in AAA. He needs that experience to show he would be succesful out of the gate in 2011.
While I believe D Brown will not be the full-time starting RF for the Phillies in 2011, I would not be against it, if they figured out a creative way to keep Werth. The only way I can see it happening, is if the Phillies trade Victorino, then eat 7 million of Ibanez’s salary in a trade. Then the Phillies would have the 14-15mil needed to keep Werth. They could then have an Outfield of Werth, Fransisco and Brown.
Seems simple, but things never work out that easy.

Well evreryone has a right to there opinion, and mine is brown will not be left down too much longer if ibanez continues to struggle. I am sorry but to say a guy is pitching good because he gives up all his runs in one inning, makes no sense, he has four strikeout, how do you not know the umpire is not giving him pitches, just like your argument he might be giving up bloopers, they were earned runs with two outs not a good start, and tom do you know how hard he was throwing, if there was great catches to save him runs, oh i guess its only one way you can have it , all the hits were lucky.Arugmument still stands its a 9era now matter what that stinks.

A 9 ERA in ONE start … how many people calculate someone’s ERA for ONE start?

My point is, you don’t just someone based on one start. This was his first bad start of the year, I’ve been quite pleased with him so far and I have no expectation for every start to be a quality one. You can look at all the negatives, which they were there today, but you can also look at the whole picture for this year so far, which has been pretty good, and also see that even when struggling, he was able to miss some bats, so I do remain encouraged.

tom all i was trying to say is 4 runs in 4 innings if its one inning or not is not a good start. nothing personal. I am a little confused on the taylor link. I Thought he was a better prospect then they are saying as far as his potential. I thought people who saw him said he was a good outfielder, with a good arm, maybe am reading it wrong.

Wow, Halladay gave up 5 ER in 7 innings earlier this week. I guess with his one game 6 ERA we should trade him.
I believe Phillies only bring up prospects when they need them. And there is a clear order of operations. If an OF gets hurt, right now it’s John Mayberry. I think it’s clear they don’t like to start MLB service time or use options unless they have to… just think about their track record.
