  1. Nice to see Worley have a good start. Seems like it’s been almost a year since he had one like that.

  2. Santana’s hit something of a rough patch, 2/14 with 9 strikeouts in his last 3 games. I guess that’ll happen eventually to a 17 year-old in a full-season league…

  3. It’s good to see Castro come back from an 0 ‘fer 8 to go 3 – 4 with 2 doubles but he’s been caught stealing 6 times so far this year. He can steal bases because he stole 20 last year but he’s only stolen 3 bases in his 9 attempts. Those are real rally killers. It could be that some are missed run and hit opportunities where it’s less his fault than the batters but he’s also thrown out going from 2nd to 3rd. I know Gillies, Gose and Berry prorbalby have the green light to go at any time but in the lower minors, do these guys have the greeen light? Do the coaches call the steal opportunities?

  4. OK, I’ll apologize now if off topic but I’ve been wanting to ask this question, and since we’re talking box scores here (and just discussing SB’s), let me throw this out:

I look at the box scores every day, of all the Phils’ affilates. Is it just me, or is there an amazing number of people picked off in these games? I don’t know what it is about this. I am always checking sb’s and it seems to me a huge percentage of games someone is picked off. Am I seeing things? Just an oddity that I noticed.

  5. I know that Santana is the #10 prospect in the Phillies system, but I am suprised that he is performing relatively well at Low A. I expected more of a struggle, with him facing college pitchers this year. Last I checked, he was top 20 in OPS in the SAL.
Interesting that Santana is tied for the team lead in walks with 3 college guys. Barnes, Buschini, Ruf and Santana all have 9 walks, but Santana has the highest BB%.

  6. Other people have a Santana. Why shouldn’t we. Seriously I can see him in the Majors by 20 like the H guy. I know that’s a long way off but we need to see something great.
I can also see Brown taking off at this point he may have his feet on the ground ready for something big.

  7. I like that Brown hasn’t even really been hot or started to hit home runs in bunches and he’s still hitting. 324 with good overall numbers. Once he gets hot, it’s really going to be exciting.

On Santana, the goal, I think, was for him to hold his own. With the flashes of power and great plate discipline, he’s more than doing that. I’m encouraged with his devlopment.

  8. Cosart blister confirmed. From BlueClawsBlog:

“Jarred Cosart left last night’s game in the 3rd inning with a blister on his right middle finger. He’ll be examined over the next few days in regards to his next scheduled start, which is Thursday in Kannapolis. He was frustrated, as expected, and took the loss, his first of the season.”

No, its been a rough year for a couple of our minor league affiliates in that area. Everyone at Lakewood has been run happy and they have had a terrible success rate so far. Its a bit out of whack. Gose has had some issues trying to steal in Clearwater as he’s now facing a bit more advanced pitching/catching as well.

  10. As far as I can tell, the team is trying to develop different types of prototypical prospects. There’s your “toolshed” line of prospects – Brown, James, Hewitt, Castro, Santana, etc. . . . And they are also trying to take what I would call “pure hitter” college prospects – guys like Overbeck, Rizzotti, and Susdorf. Most of these guys won’t pan out, but a few will become spare parts in the majors and few may even end up being productive corner outfielders or, perhaps, even corner infielders. I am fine with that and I am happy to see that Overbeck is starting to hit. Last year, it was frustrating, a typical game for him always seemed like 1-5 with a double. This year, the hits are more common and it looks like he’s taken a step forward. But until they hit at AA, you just have to suspend judgment.

One guy I am getting excited about, however, is Hyatt. When you have success over and over and over again, even as they promote you, there is legtimate reason for hope. They need to get him to AA to see if he’s for real. However, so far, so good.

  11. Also, with last night’s start, I hope the silly, Drew Carpenter is a better spot starter than Nelson Figueroa entries stop in their tracks. Nelson Figueroa is a perfect spot starter – he doesn’t have A+ stuff, but he knows what he’s doing out there and can hold his own for 5 or 6 innings. Drew Carpenter may develop into something, but he doesn’t currently pitch at the same level as Figueroa (and, it just so happens, I don’t think he throws much harder, if he does at all).

  12. Nobody should be worried about the Phillies’ base stealing/base running in the minors – if the player is good enough to make it to the majors, Davy Lopes, who I think is the best base running coach in major league history (look at the Phils’ ridiculous steal percentage – and look at how much Victorino improve as soon as Lopes arrived), will straighten them out.

  13. Cosart to the 7 day DL with the blister. Could be a blessing in disguise, since they will probably be limiting his innings this year anyway. This way he might be able to pitch in a pennant race either in Lakewood or Clearwater, as opposed to being shut down in late July.

  14. Could care less if Cosart, May, Colvin or Aumont pitch in a pennant race this year. In fact, I would prefer that none of them pitch in the minor league playoffs. If they all get to their target number of innings by July, so be it.

  15. Aumont is perfect through 4 innings with 3 Ks thusfar. Not really sure how he’s looking but it seems he’s adjusting well to the delivery adjustment as his era is sitting at 3.66.

  16. No too shabby. I wonder if he’s done at this point. He was starting to get hit there in the 6th and they had the BP up. I wonder what his pitch count is.

  17. Aumont’s day is done after 6 IP of no-hit ball. Great showing for him and that’s 2 solid starts in a row for him as he continues to work on his new delivery and transitioning back to starting.

    His season line is now: 4 GS, 21.2 IP, 3.32 ERA, 16 H, 14 K, 9 BB. 1.154 WHIP.

  18. That line could not have come from a player that was acquired from Seattle over the winter, could it? The Phillies did not get any good prospects in that deal.

  19. NEPP: was he just throwing his fastball, or was he mixing in his other pitches? Very encouraging. Last two starts 11 ip, 1r, 9k, 2bb, 3h.
Also up at Lehigh Valley Mayberry is trying to get his name into the sweepstakes to replace Werth. .898 ops and hitting righthanders well. Would be nice if he has turned a corner.

  20. According to the radio and periodic TV reports from the game Aumont’s struggled somewhat with getting his curve over consistently. However walking only two he must have been spotting his fastball well. But on his final out in the 6th he threw what was described as a 12 to 6 curve for strike two. Then got a called third strike on a 90 mph fast ball on the corner to end his 6 inning no-no.

  21. Schwim had a decent day too: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 Ks

He walked the first two batters but then shut them down and struck out the side in the 9th.

  22. Very encouraging on Aumont! I deferred to the Phils scouts at the time due to the fact they had inside information on the guy from Looper. Having him go back to his predraft mechanics could prove that to be true. Hopefully, the guy is figuring things out. It is also nice to see Gillies and Ramirez adjusting and settling in as prospects.

  23. JC Ramirez really has not had a bad game yet. Then again, he is in A ball. They seem to be building him up slowly since he got beat up in the CAL league last year. Can not argue much with the decisions the front office has made regarding prospects the last couple of years.

Good maybe. Good enough for an award winning pitcher. Don’t think so,but maybe some do.

  25. This is great on Aumont – his stuff was downright nasty in the videos I saw, so I can’t say I’m shocked he’s doing well, but I am surprised he’s doing well this early in the year.

  26. I can’t believe somebody else noticed how Herndon was squeezed, it was insane and he wasn’t the only one. The home plate umpiring was so one-sided (all calls for D’Backs, almost none for Phils), that it almost appeared to be fixed. Seriously, it was that bad.

On Herndon – he’s got to stick it out as does the team – he needs time to develop pitches and approach, but the kid has a killer arm – he was around 95 or 96 all day with crazy movement. He has A quality stuff.

  27. It is amazing to see the lack of infield prospects. I know this is discussed frequently, but the complete lack of interest in drafting these infield positions is interesting/odd to me. It is not even like they have picked infielders high and failed. They rarely even pick an infielder in the early rounds or with true “prospect” status. I know Hewitt was drafted as a 3rd baseman but even he is now an outfielder. Oh, well we will see is they change their focus in June.

I enjoy reading the updates on a daily basis. Thank you for all of the hard work!

  28. In Herndon’s defense I saw four or five pitches called on the outside in a row even a pull hitter like Reynolds will catch on and go to right and that he did. In today’s game you have to be able to throw a high pitch once in a while.
    Nice step forward for Aumont.
