Box Score Roundup; April 13th

It wasn’t a banner evening down on the farm tonight, as you’ll see with the box scores. But one thing I wanted to address, before it becomes a topic for discussion. Don’t worry about any slow starters in the first week, two weeks or three weeks. Some guys start slow, some guys start fast. It’s not really worth being overly concerned about anyone until at least May. Tyson Gillies was drawing rave reviews from scouts like 3 weeks ago, he didn’t forget how to play the game in 3 weeks. Things will turn around. Now, onto the lines

AAA: Lehigh Valley won 12-0.

John Mayberry: 2/3, 1 2B (1), 2 BB

AA: Reading lost 5-2.

Tyson Gillies: 0/4
Freddy Galvis: 1/3, 1 BB
Domonic Brown: 2/4, 1 R

Vance Worley: 5 IP – 5 ER – 6 H – 4 BB – 2 K (5 GB – 5 FB)

A+: Clearwater lost 3-2.

Anthony Gose: 0/4
Cody Overbeck: 2/3, 1 HR (1)
Tim Kennelly: 0/4

Austin Hyatt: 5.2 IP – 2 ER – 4 H – 0 BB – 5 K (10 GB – 1 FB)

A: Lakewood lost 2-1.

Jonathan Villar: 1/5
Jiwan James: 0/5
Leandro Castro: 0/5
Sebastian Valle: 2/4
Domingo Santana: 2/3, 1 HR (1), 1 2B (2)
Anthony Hewitt: 0/3

Nick Hernandez: 7 IP – 1 ER – 6 H – 1 BB – 7 K

Notes: Austin Hyatt settled down after a shaky start. Rough night for the top of the Lakewood lineup, but Domingo Santana is heating up in a big way. Nick Hernandez tossed a solid game, but it came in a loss. Freddy Galvis drawing walks is a positive sign.

Talk amongst yourselves.

  1. According to the Blueclaws twitter page Santana’s home run was of the opposite field variety… so obviously this dude is a manchild.

  2. I’d like to hear someone in the front office’s take on Santana. They haven’t really hyped him up like they have Brown, Gillies, Cosart, May. I see a 17 yr old who is already 6’6″ and in full season ball hitting oppo field home runs and think future superstar. For instance one thing I’d like to know is how athletic is he?

  3. Three things that struck be about yesterday’s games. Henandez had 3 pickoffs. He gave up 6 hits & 1 BB and then picked off 3 of them. New strategy?

Hyatt had 10 / 1 GO/FO. He also struck out 5. His slow start could be because Romero needed to get his work in first.

Lastly, trying not to jump on the Overbeck bandwagon because of the small sample size but he’s batting .429 against lefties and .400 against righties. So far the Ks are under wraps. He is repeating A+ but if he keeps it up, they’ll need to test him at Reading.

  4. Love the early returns from James, Hewitt, and Santana. Somebody’s gonna get called up by mid-May to Clearwater because Lakewood’s outfield is too crowded. I can’t wait for Short Season ball to get started. I think it’s either James or Castro. And that’ll bump either Susdorf or Gump off the Thresher lineup.

  5. Until proven otherwise, you should assume that Santana is the age he says he is. USCIS (legacy INS) cracked down heavily on that type of thing back after 9/11 (something that would have occurred well before Santana was even out of grade school) so its far far less of a problem than it used to be. Its much more difficult to pass off fake documents to get an entry visa now than it used to be. This is a big part of the reason that a good number of guys admitted it (like Tejada, Soriano, etc) in the last 5 years. Their teams (in both cases) already knew this as they had to for payroll/tax purposes.

Basically, if he and the Phillies say he is 17, he 99.9% likely is.

How’s his defense? I remember him being terrible in SS A ball. No range, stone hands, etc. Has he improved that part of his game?

  7. Jonathan Villar is another guy that has impressed me. He’s drawn a couple of walks, and managed to hit the ball some. He hasn’t hit for power yet – but he did show some good speed last year. He turns 19 next month so he’s definetely one of the younger guys in the league.

Hat tip to Andyb for pointing him out two years ago.

  8. How is Villar defensively…will he stick at SS as he progresses or is he more of a Jason Donald type defender (okay utility wise with the glove but nothing special).

  9. I believe I remember reading something on the blueclaws blog about Villar. It was an interview with the manager, Dusty Wathan, he said Villar was alot of range and was incredibly athletic. Not sure about his hands or arm but I took that as a promising quote about his defensive skills.

  10. Galvis>>>>>>>>> Ozzie Smith 😉

Seriously, does anyone else see the obvious parallel here? Light hitting SS with a wizard glove? Can’t wait to see him play SS, hopefully in 2012.

  11. The other scouting report I saw on Villar was actually a little different than that one on the Blueclaws blog. The comparison I saw was that he was closer to a Jason Donald type. Solid range. Decent athleticsm but only average speed. In general I think his defense is seen as good, but a notch or two below Galvis. Basically the comparison with Donald was to show him as someone who does everything fairly well but no one thing outstandingly well. He is definitely rising in my mind as he holds his own after a fairly aggressive promotion. He really didn’t play much at Williamsport last year, so this is a double jump for him.

  13. Galvis = Ozzie Smith? In our dreams . . . . .

For every 100 slick fielding shortstops that come to the major leagues, only one turns out to be an Ozzie Smith or an Omar Vizquel. Galvis has better odds than most, but it’s more than wishful thinking to assume that’s how good he will become.

  14. SANTANA WOULD BE HITTING .500 IF NOT FOR THE 0-5 OPENING DAY. I HERD FROM A GOOD SOURCE THAT HE WAS VERY UPSET THAT DAY BECAUSE HE HAD JUST FOUND OUT THE EASTER BUNNY DID NOT EXSIST! HAHAHAHA

  15. With Castro and James on the team I have to assume that Villar has some good speed if he is batting lead off.

He may be the biggest surprise this early in the season. Next to Hewitt of course. 19 years old and more than holding his own in Lakewood.

  16. about domingo not looking 17- jamie moer looks like he’s close to 60. brett farve looks at least 50. I’ve got a 19 nyear old friend who doesn’t get carded. I mean, some people look old, especiall atheltes

  17. I haven’t seen Overbeck but he has been positionally challenged in the past. I think a good comp for him is Sellers. They are similar in stats (batting) with Overbeck showing a little more pop in his early years than Sellers did. Sellers hit better for average. I think Sellers was picked up in the minor league draft or signed as a free agent but when we went to Reading his bat exploded. I’ve seen Sellers play and he doesn’t seem to have the range of a Major League 3rd baseman. Put Galvis at SS and he’d be a little better protected.

  18. Here’s a good picture of Santana:

    http://twitpic.com/1f8v3d

I can definitely see why some people could have suspicion about his age – he’s just such a physical specimen for a 17-year-old.

It’s crazy to see what he’s doing at an age where he could be a junior in high school. I’m really hoping the Phillies did all the homework to make sure about this guy’s age, because he has the makings of a stud.

  19. He looks 17 in that photo. Imagine what he’ll be when he matures…Dave Winfield comes to mind.

Note: I am NOT comparing his talent level to a HoF player, just the body type/size.

Again on the age thing…its very very rare for one to slip through without active participation by the club and the country in question. USCIS is quite active (an entire task force actually) in stopping that sort of thing due to the terrorist issues related to it. Trust me, I have first hand knowledge of it due to my job.

  21. Ozzie Smith hit .303 in his only year in the minors. Galvis has a long way to go to even be that light-hitting…

Can we please stop trying to compare players in AA with HOF’ers…

  22. The picture of Santana makes him look like a big, strong, athletic 17 or 18-year old. My son is a high school athlete (football and wrestling) – this kid does not look much different than the big, developed athletes that he plays with (in fact, he looks roughly the same age as my son, who is almost 16).

As for Jamie Moyer looking 60 – ouch!!!! This has to be written by somebody who is about 20 or 25. Jamie Moyer looks damn good for being nearly 48. He looks exactly like what he is – a guy in his late 40s who is in great shape. 60? Damn!

  23. Cody Overbeck has made 34 errors in the past 2 seasons with a .911 fld% so he’s not the best defender

  24. NEPP,

Actually, even on a talent level basis Winfield wouldn’t be an absurd comparison – just premature. That’s because of Santana’s age/level, and the importance of age/level. Taylor, as good as he may be, is never going to be a Winfield, given his age (and some people made that comparison). Whereas Santana COULD be, though of course the odds are against him.

Seriously that is assuming alot but at a one level a year progression he will be 19 at reading.. when was the last 19 year old that started in reading?? did Jimmy. I am very excited about whats going on down in our low minors

  26. Since Dave Winfield never played in the minors the comparison talent level wise would be absurd as well.

Santana is also built just like John Mayberry, Dave Kingman, Michael Taylor, etc. so why not make that comparison instead?

  27. Hmm, according to the boxscore so far it looks as if May was pulled after pitching only 1.2 innings, 4 Ks and 4 BBs, I wonder if its injury or what…

    Like

  28. may got pulled already, i know he struggled with walks but he only gave up 1 run, i hope he didn’t get hurt or something

  29. For the record, I wasn’t seriously saying Galvis would be the next Ozzie Smith. Although, FWIW, Ozzie hit his .303 in his one minor league year at low A ball at age 22, while Galvis is now in AA at ag 20, so who knows? I just meant they were both slick fielding SS who will never be known for hitting.

  30. Catch 222, agree on Moyer’s age. Lots of twenty-somethings think everyone over 40 looks 60. Just the way they perceive.

On Santana, if you put that pic in front of me with no context, I would have to say 20-21. That does not mean he is not 17. Just that he has the physically mature for his age look.

  31. May got pulled in the middle of the inning…..without 1st hand report of what happened its hard to tell….but my gut says it wasn’t for wildness……if it is an injury lets hope it was just the team being over-cautious.

    Like

  32. I was just about to say that it did not seem like an injury – just overall wildness and the sooner they nip that in the bud, the better. We don’t need any 8 walk performances dancing through his head the next start.

  33. Even if Santana is actually 19 turning 20 this year (which I doubt), he’d still be young for Lakewood. It’s ok to get excited.

  34. anybody have an opinion on whether these young starters are a little off when they do not start the game because of a rehab player(romero and lidge). Hyatt had a rough start yesterday and May is wild today.

  35. Hewitt with another RBI single. So happy for a that guy. If this is for real, he shuts up a lot of critics.

  36. Not necessarily justifying the comparison, but while Winfield did go directly to the majors, it was out of college as a 21 year old. Santana is playing the equivalent of his senior year of high school in A-ball. Additionaly they were both drafted into three professional sports leagues — Winfield by the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA and the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL, and Santana by the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL, and the Santo Domingo Dados of the Domino Federacion Internacional.

  37. Good point about may and Hyatt coming into the game in the second and third. Shouldn’t matter though, still have to prepare like its a start. Think it has more to do with these guys settling into the new season. We’ll see how they look after a few more games.

  38. Hope everyone gets a chance to see Lakewood play at some point this season. It was a cozy atmosphere at Hagerstown tonight. At times it was so quiet from the couple of hundred fans on hand I could hear Greg doing the play by play up in the booth from my front row seat behind the right handed hitters batters box. But the bats of the BlueClaws and the high velocity pitches of Jarrad Cosart made for an interesting night.

The Blue Claws are a rare blend of talented college guys and MLB teenage prospects. Cosart was so impressive. Worked his fastball up and down, in and out. Threw in an occassional curve which locked up a few National farm hands or just overpowered them to rack up 7 K’s in 5.1 innings of work though he did work alot of deep counts. He kept the ball on the ground for the rest of his outs. His stuff was so explosive at times that Ville was struggling to handle him resulting in some wild pitches and a pass ball. Clearly, Cosart is the number one pitching prospect in the farm system with the stuff he has. Santana, as any 17 year old would from time to time, had an off night but Villar hit one off the top of the batters eye in center for a triple and Valle took a high fast ball out to right center. Hewitt would revert to his strike out ways on three appearances but also did manage to drive two hard hit balls for hits. The college guys Barnes, Ruf, and Buschini had no trouble squaring up the ball for extra base hits. This team will only get better as the weather warms and that is kind of a scary thought.
