Gregg covered the happenings at Lehigh Valley, so I’ll just add the notes from Lakewood, Clearwater and Reading. Feel free to use this post to discuss anything/everything, and also if you have LHV specifics, you can put them in gregg’s post.
Lakewood won 10-7.
The good;
Jonathan Villar; 2/5 with 2 runs and a SB
Jiwan James; 2/5 with a 2B and 2 RBI
The bad;
Nick Hernandez allows 6 runs, 2 earned, and 2 HR in 6 IP.
Domingo Santana goes 0/5 with 3 K
Check below for more…
Clearwater wins 10-2.
The good;
Austin Hyatt “started” after JC Romero got his inning in. 6 IP – 2 H – 2 ER – 1 BB – 7 K, 7:4 GB:FB
Matt Rizzotti; 3/4 with a HR and a BB
Troy Hanzawa; 3/4 with a 2B
The bad;
Anthony Gose was 1/6 with 3 K
Tim Kennelley was 0/5 with a BB
Reading lost 10-5
The good;
Freddy Galvis was 2/4 with a 2B
The bad;
Phillies pitchers gave up 10 runs, including 4 HR
Tyson Gillies went 0/4 with a HBP
Domonic Brown was 1/4 with a 2B
Discuss!!!!
Galvis continues to hit. Things could get real interesting if this continues.

Some things I noted while listening to part of the Lakewood radio broadcast…
– Sounded like Villar was making some nice plays in the field
– Santana lined out hard in his first AB
– Castro got HBP’d but swung at it so it was a strike. He was in some pain but stayed in the game
– Lebron had a good breaking ball going

Galvis actually hitting would be one of the two or three best “breakouts” we could have happen as a system. We really need decent MI prospects.
Schwimer were OK in relief, it was German and Rosenberg who really gave up the runs. Rosenberg got torched by Lehigh Valley last night, too; might be hurting a bit.

The Threshers get a 10-2 win to start their season. Fidel Hernadez got off to a strong start with 4 RBIs in the game, while Brian Gump and Troy Hanzawa each had 2 RBIs. Matt Rizzotti picked up the Threshers’ first HR of the year going 3-4 on the night, and Austin Hyatt held the Jays hitless going into the 7th until giving up a 2-run HR.
If you haven’t already signed up for the Threshers Nation Twitter feed go do it now to get live updates as the games happen all season.

Friday’s games should be really interesting. Cosart going for Lakewood and Aumont for Reading. Not sure who is pitching for Clearwater, but if it is May or Ramirez, it is going to be a big pitching prospect day.

yea it is a big day, may is supposed to go for clearwater so 3 top pitching prospects going tomorrow

So a little off topic kind of interesting though, I mean it might not be a big shocker, but the Blue Jays kept Drabek at AA to start the season.

I agree w phillychuck. Not that Galvis goes under the radar on this site (everyone is more than aware of his potential – especially his glove), but I think of all the prospects I’ll be following this season, Galvis may be at the top of my list. If he shows he can hit with some consistency….wow. What a bonus this would be.

Lakewood- interesting that Steven Batts was DH batting 9th with Leandro Castro in LF and Anthony Hewitt DNP.
Siulman Lebron pitched 2 innings in relief , allowing 1 hit . All outs were groundouts or strikeouts. Looks like he will be the set-up man to start off and Eric Massingham will be the closer. I think Massingham might be able to move up in status a little.
Darin Ruf was the top hitter with 3 for 5 with Double , Home Run 4 RBI’s . If they were to bring up Singleton anytime soon , Ruf going to Clearwater would be the way, to supplant some combination or all of Murphy, Rizzotti, Durant, etc. Leandro Castro does not have the experience or age to move up and he bombed early in the year at Lakewood last season.

I can’t imagine Hewitt DNP because of anything other than injury or sickness after his amazing spring.

Brown going to 1-4 with a double is bad?

What, amazing Spring? Because he hit well in a couple weeks of Group D Spring Training games? Do they even keep the stats?

Hewitt was a last minute scratch but will play tonight. He probably was sick. Nick Hernandez pitched fine for awhile but gave up some runs on 2 homers later with a big lead. He only gave up 2 homers all last season so the learning process should begin for him that the hitters keep getting better. Hyatt’s performance has me very excited about him. He was lights out in ST and he starts the year with a gem (other than D’Arnaud’s homer which is funny in itself since he caught Hyatt at the end last eyar). Keep an eye on him because he could move up quickly at his age. Schwimer and BJ both gave up homers as Reading’s staff gave up 4 in total. Keep the ball down fellas… Great first day and an awesome 3 prospects pitching second day to follow tonight!

Sounds like Santana had a tough debut. The Phillies may be giving him a quick look at and when Williamsport’s season starts have him, Hudson, and Dugan in the outfield there. Nice start by Hyatt. I think he could move through the system fast. I liked the stats on Lebron. Looks like he is a groundball pitcher based off last night and last years numbers. Definately big night tonight with Aumont and Cosart pitching. I’m sure some of the front office will be at each location. If May pitches tonight there will be someone in CLW as well

That 1st inning thing pales in comparison to going to http://www.milb.com , clicking on the Teams , clicking on by affiliation, going down to Phillies system, clicking on each team by name and getting the boxscore, which include much more information. You could also click on the current roster for each team there. For the MLB box, that can be got off of http://www.philly.com which most will go to anyway.

marfis: you would rather make 15 different clicks to access the MiLB info rather than just go to one page that has all of the information available?

I like First Inning too. Gives me all I want very quickly and I agree about clicks. I hate clicks, will do anything to avoid them.

They don’t have all of the information available though, I don’t see a running batting average for players, the ability to click on a players’ name for all the stats, fielding information, simple click on same page to see League Transactions, team roster, and such . Doubles, Triples , Home Runs, with running totals. More on the boxscore, game re-caps. Etc. Maybe a story below, the team’s website, maybe hi-lites, feature, Etc.

marfis, you’re missing something though. If you want the detail, at firstinning.com, just click on the score at the top of the box score and it will take you to the MILB.com boxscore … MUCH easier!

Ok, that might make a difference. I just gave it the perfunctory once over. Maybe I try that again.

Love it when someone takes ONE day to draw conclusion. Gose is one of the youngest players in the FSL. Great analysis there.

“Gose can’t play”? Seriously? After one game? Too funny…

A note to what we have been hearing about Cosart. Keith Law mentioned him in his chat yesterday:
Klaw:
Bud in Manasquan: I’m not really sure what you’re asking, but if you live near Lakewood, go see them when Jarred Cosart pitches. Apparently he’s added a lot of velocity – I just heard he held 95-96 in a late-March start – and he might be the second-best prospect in that system all of a sudden.
That would make him the #1 pitching prospect in the system.

Wow. Three whole times??? And here I thought you were basing your opinion on just one night!!! I doubt there is anyone who has seen enough to truly judge hIm. Stats sure aren’t a true testament either. People are obviously reacting to your he can’t play comment. He had success in low A as one of the youngest players in the league. He’s again young for his league and now has one good game an one bad game. Until he proves otherwise, he’s shown success to gave plenty of HOPE for the future. None of his stats say he CAN’T play.

that dude – did you see his game last night? 3 hits, a triple and a stolen base. what’s not to like about that? he is 19 in high A ball. maybe give the kid a chance to develop before you label him a terrible hitter.
also in the camp of labeling a prospect too soon, hewitt made his debut last night. i don’t know what got me more excited, the homerun, the 2 for 3 or the walk. probably the walk. make them all pay for doubting you kid!
