Some info on the Lehigh Valley and Reading rosters, with most information coming courtesy of Jeff Schuler, the Lehigh Valley beat writer for the Morning Call. The following players were transferred from the Lehigh Valley roster to the Reading roster: Pitchers Mike STutes and Jason Stephens, Catcher Kevin Nelson, 3B Brandon Pinckney, 1B Brian Stavisky, and OF’s Kevin Mahar and Mike SPidale. SS Ozzie Chavez who was re-assigned by the Phils to Minor League camp was assigned to the Reading group.
As of right now the Lehigh Valley group includes:
Catchers: Gosewisch, Sardinha, Suomi, and Paul Hoover, likely to be sent down from the Phils.
Infield: Tracy, Sellers, Bozied, Dorta, Bocock, Maza (Both Ransom and Valdez remain with the Phils but are likely to be sent down.
Outfield: Mayberry, Berry, Duffy, Guzman, Thompson (Wise remains with the Phils and he has the option whether or not to accept a minor league assignment when sent down)
Starting Pitching: Carpenter, Bump, Savery, Vogelsong, Mazone, Duckworth
Relievers: ANderson, Mathieson, Zagurski, Gordon, Concepcion, Overholt, Wasserman, Woods. Both Villareal and Ennis most likely will begin the year on the DL.
In Reading, the roster currently includes:
Catchers: Nelson, Purdom, Farkas
Infield: Stavisky, Campbell, Pinckney, CHavez, Hernandez, Galvis, De Renne
Outfield: Brown, Gillies, Susdorf, Mahar, Spidale
SP: Aumont, Flande, Stutes, Cisco, Worley, Ramirez
RP: Brummett, Chapman, Escalona, Garcia, German, Hernandez, Mackintosh, Naylor, Rosenberg, Schwimer, Stephens.
Rosters most likely will include 2 catchers, 6 infielders, 5 outfielders and 12 pitchers so there is much work ahead for the Front Office to whittle it down to the needed numbers.
Kennelly not on the Reading roster? very strange

Rosenberg, Schwimer may be needed early if the pen fails.
BAD PHILS HEADLINES
“Lidge’s velocity remains a little low”
Translated to real talk means the minors will be big this year.
The catching and infielder reflect the shortcomings in the system. But the Reading outfield seems great. Hoping to make the combo game.

What happens if Cody Ransom accepts his demotion? It seems that the team would have to choose between Ransom and Sellers. Cody Ransom has played in the majors and can play shortstop, but Sellers is the better overall hitter. If Valdez is the SS at Lehigh, then there is no reason to keep Cody Ransom.

Cody Ransom is the better hitter as well.

I think Ransom will decide to stick around because he sees there’s not much depth and no big prospect at 3B. However, I assume they’ll keep Sellers too because he’s hit every year at every level. I would think Bozied and Dorta might be the odd men out. Lots of pitchers still to get cut or DLed. Another couple of days and we should hear some news on where everyone’s going. Some interesting decisions still have to be made on Santana and Castro.
Fyi – Kennelly got sent down to Clearwater due to all the catchers (some still to be cut) but its not an encouraging sign for Kennelly’s future.

What is the thought process behind Escalona in Reading vs. LHV?
Can’t wait to watch that outfield in Reading.
LikeLike
Escalona has been on a bad track since last September. I think they just want him to go back to Reading to see if he can “start over” so to speak. If he pitches well, I’d imagine he’d be up in AAA within a few weeks, especially considering how thin the big club is with LHP.

Alan, I disagree that Cody Ransom is a better hitter than Neil Sellers. Ransom has more power, but he is not a good hitter. Ransom makes less contact than John Mayberry Jr.

So Stutes will not be in LHV this year? Of Stutes, Worley, Aumont, Ramirez, Cisco, Flande, who will be moved to the pen?
My choice would be Flande because he has a good slider with deception so he has the makings of a good loogey.

So, looks like Stavisky to 1B at RDG? No James Murphy who played there in ST. Looks like he joins Rizzotti and Durant to compete at CLW. Might be a couple of cuts or even retirements there.
So maybe Overbeck to fill that 3B hole at CLW. Or maybe Yonderman Rodriguez. Maybe they share the position like last season.
Looks like Susdorf will LF at RDG. Derrick Mitchell maybe plays ahead of Gump at CLW? Mitchell, Gose, D. Myers with Gump in reserve, I guess that.
Kennelly to work in with Naughton at CLW. I guess that.
Don’t look like very many prospects or even guys signed by team , position player wise , at LVIP or RDG. For alot of the guys Philly signed, spinning the wheels.

I would think they start Escalona at Reading because Zagurski will be in Lehigh Valley and they have the same role to fill. This way both will be able to get the innings they need in key situations.

Mike77, Ransom has logged higher OPS’s than Sellers consistently except for last year when Ransom got hurt. And that’s despite playing in AAA against playing in AA. The only thing Sellers has going for him is the batting average. Ransom’s secondary hitting skills, walks and power, make up for that.

I’d move Flande to the bullpen.
Gregg – is the ‘Garcia’ in the Reading BP list Edgar? Do you think he’s done as a starter?

Good point Gregg, I always forget about Zagurski. Mainly because I think he’ll never amount to anything (baseball speaking of course, I’m sure he’s a fine guy).

I apologize for posting something off-topic, but there used to be a page at the top to post stuff like this and I don’t see it anymore. This seems like the most recent general post, so I’m sticking it here.
At the bottom of this article: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/20100331_Phils_reap_benefits_of_nearby_farm_system.html
“It can be helpful, but with a great spring training we might do a million dollars better,” Montgomery said. “When your payroll is $140 million and your scouting and development is $27 million or whatever, the extra money is helpful…”
I was shocked by the $27 million number. I’d imagine that’s fairly high as far as most S&D departments go. It’s just the first time I’ve seen any kind of number for it, so I figured I’d share.

Yes, it is Edgar Garcia. I dont think that the door is completely closed on him as a starter however it is clearly inching shut.

When I saw Chavez last year, he seemed to an on field leader. Flande and Concepcion pitched in the game and Galvis was at SS. When Roadcap made a visit to the mound, which occurred far too often, Chavez came in and may have been interpreting. He was doing a lot of talking. He can surely help Galvis with the transition and Flande will still be there. I may be reading too much into this but that’s the way it appeared to me.
Kennelly needs more instruction if he’s going to be a catcher. Dusty Wathan is still at CLW isn’t he? He can teach catching. Of course, Roadcap was a catching instructer so either place would be fine for instruction but CLW would have a lot less stress.

I doubt Overbeck is going to Clearwater. Mattair has been at Lakewood for 2 years and must move to Clearwater. Must be some more roster moves coming

dwarf,
Mattair is either retired or taking some time off. He’snot in the picture as of now.

Evidently you did not read much else on the blog. There is a quote from CSN that Mattair will take some time off, and then if he chooses he will report to Extended Spring Training. Overbeck evidently will not make Reading by the above rosters, so unless he is released or retires, Clearwater seems a good bet.

I’m sure Overbeck will start at Clearwater at third. I’m surprised that they decided to keep tavisky and move Murphy down though. I’m assuming that Durant and Mitchell will be released now along with a few others. Keeping the 4A guys at the top compresses everything and with new guys coming, its either up or out and I think they’re going to cut a bunch of the guys that look stagnant. They could have cut Mattair but decided they’d keep him around because he’s still young, has a great glove, and is a great guy but his days as being a prospect are over.

What is the word on the guy the Phils lost in the Rule 5 draft? If he doesn’t make the Dodgers I’m assuming the Phils are going to take him back. Where do you guys think he’ll fit back in, he’s had an impressive spring.

Stutes has been pitching out of the the pen in ST but in the couple of AAA games the inning I saw him pitch he struggled with his command.
Watched roving catching instructor Ernie Whitt work with Kennelly with his catching throwing motion.
Overbeck and Murphy were stinging the ball in ST but if they are assigned to Clearwater they may have to share time with Y. Rodriquez at 3rd and Rizzotti at first. Of all non top 30 prospect players in camp the power of Overbeck and Murphy impressed me the most. Looks like Hanzawa at SS and H. Garcia at second will make up the rest of the Threshers infield.
Non top 30 prospect players Barnes 2B, Duran SS and Buschini 3B impressed me the most in the low A games. But I would expect Villar to push Duran into extended ST at low A.

Quite interesting–a very wide range of performance potential, IMO. Could be pretty good or several busts at this level could mean a long season. Hoping for the former!

Squire, et al:
Here is my ranking of the rank the guys I think have the best chance to continue positive progress–most likely to have good years (non-scientific). I am leaving out Ruf, who I consider org filler, and sticking with prospects.
Good chance (best chance #1):
1. Valle
2. Singleton
3. Castro
4. Villar
5. Barnes (borderline)
Iffy (best chance #6):
6. Collier
7. James
8. Hewitt
9. Buschini
With Hewitt having a few hot stretches last year and making marginal improvement, I suppose he could surprise a bit. If he hits .250 with some walks this year and 12+ HRs, he stays a prospect IMO, with his tools.

I’d take a second look at Adam Buschini. Good plate discipline, showed some power, ran the bases well. The negative on his batting line is the batting average, and in 210 plate appearances that could be a fluke.
Jiwan James as well I think could take a huge stride. I don’t think Singleton is ready for Lakewood based on 30 odd games in the GCL.

Max, Last I read on Carlos Monasterios, who was chosen by the Mets in the Rule 5 draft and then traded to the Dodgers, is that he could stick as a #5 starter or bullpen guy until he falters. He’s pitched 15 innings over 8 outings and has a 1.80 ERA in ST. He pitched well in winter ball.
I’d like him back but I’ve asked the question before…where would we put him?
