Updated Minor League Workout Groups

Thanks to reader “TJ” for supplying me with the latest update, which came on March 23rd. Click here to see the image. I uploaded it to Google Photos and checked it on another browser, but if you have trouble viewing the image, I’ll also upload it to another external source. Check below the fold for more.

To compare this, check out Jeff’s post from the beginning of March with the original work groups here.

So now some thoughts…

* Brody Colvin, Jarred Cosart and Jon Pettibone is a heck of a top 3 in the Lakewood rotation, if thats how it shakes out. I’d love to see Shreve and Julio Rodriguez rounding out the rotation here.

* Looks like it might be Trevor May, Matt Way, Jesus Sanchez, Heitor Correa and then either De Fratus, Cloyd, Sampson, or Byrd as the 5th starter for Clearwater.

* Matt Rizzotti is still in Group 3, which is kind of disappointing. It looks like Tim Kennelly should get the bulk of the catching duties at Reading, which should give the org an idea of what he can do going forward.

* I’d guess the AA rotation will feature Aumont, JC Ramirez, Worley, Edgar Garcia and then one other arm.

* Mike Stutes is in the “AAA group”, which makes me think he’s going to be converted to a reliever full time in 2010.

* Aaron Altherr and Kyrell Hudson will definitely be in Williamsport

* Surprisingly, Jon Singleton is in Group 5, and probably won’t open in Lakewood, which is moderately disappointing.

  1. Six outfields that need to get time in group 4. Only 2 that need to get time in group 3. 2 of note in group 5. Something has to give.

  2. Looks like it will either be Naylor or Flande at Reading as the 5th starter… Lebron as the 5th starter at Clearwater and I think it will be Shreve and Hernandez rounding out Lakewood…all in all very nice starting at 5 at all those levels. Surprised by Colvin, but that is awesome.
Best guess at Williamsport: Angelle, Inch, Saski, Kleven & Rodriguez…

  3. Tuffy was back in Group 2 or Reading catching in today’s game against the Blue Jays AA team at Robin Roberts Field. He threw out a runner and picked up a base hit. J.C Ramirez started and went 5 innings giving up a run on four hits, walking two and striking out four. Edgar Garcia, who appears that they are sloting as a middle reliever, pitched two innings giving up only a walk. Sergio Escalona pitched the 8th and Chris Kissock the 9th without giving up a hit or run. Right now the way they are stretching out the pitchers its looks like the Reading rotation might be Aumont, Ramirez, Worley, Naylor and Cisco.

The power today came from first baseman big Jim Murphy who hit a double up off the batters eye in center and doubled to right cneter and Cody Oberbeck who homered to right center after coming into the game to replace Eric Campbell at third. The most exciting hit today was a Tyson Gillies line drive to right which he stretch what appeared to be a routine single into a double on shear speed alone. He is one of only a few players who could have turned that base hit into a double.

  4. The other day Jason Stark was talking about how some scouts were saying Tyson Gillies is one of the fasted runners in all of baseball. Compared his speed to Michael Bourns. I’d love to see him and Gose race each other.

  5. PP, remember that Paul Hoover and Dane Sardinha are still backing up the big club in Spring Training. Nelson, Gosewisch and Suomi are probably not AAA bound which creates a tremendous catching logjam at Reading. I doubt Kennelly is the full time catcher when all is said and done.

  6. Any chance Lakewood goes with a 6 man rotation? Colvin, Cosart, Pettibone, Shreve, and J-Rod is a whole lot of guys who didn’t throw a whole lot of innings last year, and it could be a good way to keep their overall innings down.

  7. I think the Phillies are trying to acquire the fastest players at all levels. Freddy Guzman has tremendous speed (but he can’t hit). Berry, Gillies, Gose, James, Hudson…

I could see Stutes as a AAA starter. No need to keep AAAA retreads if they are not needed. Lots of those guys going to be released.
DeFratus has done well at every level. He has to start I would think.
Naylor needs to move quickly since he is already eating up options years. Not sure if that means innings as a starter or conversion to a reliever to fast track.
I think Cisco has to be a starter to have any value as he is more of a control guy. (Still see him as a likely trade guy for Herndon if the Phillies want to keep Herndon.)
Kennelly is really the only prospect at C above Valle. Gosewich might still have some projection but whoever they keep will just be to help the pitching staff.
Lots of AAAA OF types. With Berry and Mayberry at AAA, Brown, Gillies, and Susdorf at AA, not much room for Wilkerson, Duffy, Bozied.

  8. I’d be really, really surprised if Quintin Berry goes to AAA. His performance hasn’t merited a promotion, he saw little time in Spring Training and the organization brought in a minor league veteran with his exact tool set.

  9. I read in one of the write-ups the other day that Spidale will probably end up in AA and Susdorf played 1st. Excellent move for Susdorf because he needs some positional flexibility. Also an OF of Brown, Gillies and Susdorf is all left-handed. They probably care less about lineup balance in the minor leagues.

  10. I see Derrick Mitchell in LF , with Gillies and D. Brown. Susdorf can play 1B , with James Murphy as DH and sometimes at 1B and then Susdorf can DH and be the OF back-up. Also at Reading I see an IF of Susdorf/Murphy at 1B, Fidel Hernanez at 2B, Freddy Galvis at SS, and Eric Chavez and Cody Overbeck alternating at 3B. Yonderman Rodriguez as another IF reserve.
As far as the catching goes, they should use Dane Sardinha
and Tuffy Goschewicz at AAA, and Tim Kennelly and Zac Farkes at AA. Hoover, Suomi , and Nelson they can release.

  11. I haven’t compared this list to the previous list, but it doesn’t seem like there have been many (any) cuts yet.

  12. Yeah , there is about 5 or 6 missing from the 1st list. Somebody put it on one of these other threads. Evan Porter, Carl Uhl, Walter Tejeda, a couple more. No big surprises yet. I really don’t see Paul Hoover either, I thought he was sent down from the MLB roster.

  13. To the roster experts:

Are we being more aggressive this year in stocking each level. Seems like we will have to make a mess o’ cuts this week and next. More than usual? Or business as usual?

Maybe we are cashing in on players wanting to be in a top-flight organization and auditioning them all to see who is primed for a good year?

  14. Durant- I think the guys who have played at the levels would be: Murphy at AA and Susdorf working in there and OF, and rizzotti at A(A) and I think they might put Ruf there and use Rizzotti as back-up and DH, and they got Jeremy Hamilton also, and I would like to see Singleton at A, but maybe they use Ruf there. If they do that maybe they keep Durant in A(A) to back up Rizzotti and DH, in lieu of that I think he goes and maybe Rizzotti goes or retires if kept at A(A).

I don’t think there would be many more cuts than in previous years , as many of the lower level guys can go to Extended Spring Training to prepare for the Short Season Leagues, many as back-ups. Most teams bring in alot of minor league veteran types to compete at AAA and AA, I don’t think there will be many shocking surprises.

That was Me at the Anonymous on who has been cut.

  15. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Phils told Mattrair he was repeating low-A he might have retired.

The work groups are less of an indication where a player is headed than the actual spring games. Singleton and Santana have seen a lot of action in the group 4 games, which means they’re likely headed to Lakewood (or possibly Williamsport). Singleton has played some group 3 games as well.

In terms of figuring out the rotations, look at who is being stretched out. Remember also that there are too many players in each group at this point, so quite a few group 1 guys are going to be playing AA, etc., which pushes everyone down a bit (or means a lot of guys will be released).

  16. If the rumor about Mattair is true, it is not really surprising. He is in the low minors and made no progress at all as a hitter in two full seasons. Best of luck to Travis in the real world.

  17. James, you should give the source of your information, instead of just throwing it out there. I have yet to see confirmation of this anywhere.

  18. According to the Phillies’ press notes, John Mayberry, Dane Sardinha and Ozzie Chavez have been reassigned to minor league camp.

  19. FYI Ryan Howard got traded to Chicago.

Oh no wait he didn’t. I just felt like posting information without specifying where it came from. Everyone should try it, it’s liberating.

  20. I simply thought people would appreciate an inside piece of information, but apparently all it has done is offended several of you out there. Im sorry. To the rest of you, still wondering, Mattair did retire, and I’m sure eventually it will surface

  21. Mattair when he was drafted the scouting reports on him were he would hit, the draft is just so hard to gauge how a player will turn out. I really thought he was going to be our future thirdbasemen, shame.

  22. Whether Mattair retired or not, it is silly to just throw out a statement like that and not say where you received the information. It makes the information useless.
And why come back and repeat the rumor again, and not give some kind of source? Organizational tie? Friend of a Friend? Newspaper? Blog? Something.

  23. Sometimes you can’t give the source. Lay off the guy. I’d assume it was personal knowledge of some sort.

  24. That’s fair enough. Thanks for the inside info, James. I just wanted you to share where it came from… if you can’t that’s fine– it just would have been nice for you to say so.

I didn’t mean to come off as a jerk- I was just feeling sarcastic at the time. I apologize.

  25. Two new players on this list: Miguel Nunez is the new pitcher we signed a couple of months ago and Geancarlo Mendez was one of the more advanced hitters (though a little old and without a defensive position) off the DSL squad last year.

Still no sign of Nevri Jiminez who was the best offensive player on last year’s DSL team.

  26. Guys, some comments seem a bit off. Cut Hoover? He’ll be the starter at AAA and the first call up in the event of an injury. A 6 man rotation in Lakewood? They won’t be doing that. Start Mitchell at Reading? Why would they do that, he’s never hit anywhere and a possible cut. I could see Berry and Spidale back at Reading because LHV will have Mayberry, Thompson, Duffy, and Wise (who has the option of getting released) although Spidale has hit this spring and might stick over Duffy. Lots of guys still to cut. As for Mattair, my guess is that the team has given him some time to reconsider his decision to retire. Its a shame, he looks like he should be a terrific player but he just can’t hit enough. Good kid too….

  27. Hey guys…To piggy back on the Mattair talk…

    http://www.csnphilly.com/03/29/10/Mattair-Taking-a-Break/landing_onthepharm.html?blockID=206188&feedID=2571

That article says hes taking a break.

As for posting information here without a source or without the full story, or the right story is wrong…I worked for Lakewood last year and now work for another team in the South Atlantic League…Travis was a tremendous guy to have around, the best character guy on the team. He volunteers and has a great deal of passion for the game as well as one of the hardest workers on the team.

I hope that after he takes a little break from the team he will be right back after it. Wishing Moose luck this season…

  28. So Mattair did not retire. The CSN article says that. Reading between the lines of the article, it looks like he did not make the full season teams, so they will give him some time off and he has the option of joining Extended Spring Training after taking some time off to clear his head and/or stop pressing something like that. It seems like he was given the option of being released outright or he can join EST after this hiatus.

  29. So if someone gets information from a friend, he’s supposed to to source to “friend”? Or you’d prefer not to have it at all? Not me, if any of you out there have information from a “friend” or something of the like, please post. If your information is good, then next time I’m gonna listen, if not, than I won’t. Frankly, this Mattair info is more accurate than not. “taking a break” is just a euphemism for retire as I’m concerned. Maybe he’ll come back, probably not, at which point you can say he cleared his head and decided to give it another go, whereas I’ll just say he unretired. whatever the case, he’s not on the team anymore, temporarily or not, this is an interesting and relatively unanticipated development, and this James fellow clearly was on to something.

  30. Yes, if you read the CSN article, especially where it says, “that will be up to him” it sure sounds like he’s considering hanging them up.

I also appreciate the information, regardless of one’s ability to offer a source.

  31. I’m assuming that Overbeck will be sent down to Clearwater to play and that’s why Mattair lost his job. Eric Campbell has hit too well not to be kept and AAA already has Sellers and Ransom to play 3B so he’ll play at Reading.

  32. The Group 4 and Group 5 outfields are both crowded. Will Santana go to Lakewood or Williamsport? What about the other outfielders in these two groups?

  33. The Lakewood group worked against Brad Lidge today. Jonathan Villar Doubled off Lidge. Jiwan James worked a walk against him. Leandro Castro stole a base off of him. Only an unearned run though.
