Friday Poll Question/Scheduling update

Tentatively I’m hoping to have my list of breakout guys for 2010 published on Monday, I’ll have my potential busts for 2010 for Tuesday, and then the SONAR stuff for pitchers on Wednesday or Thursday. This is subject to change of course based on the amount of time I have over the next few days, but its my hope.

Today’s poll question;

Which Phillies centerfield prospect do you expect to have the better 2010, Anthony Gose or Tyson Gillies? Both guys have gotten lots of positive press, they’ll start 1 level apart and both should log 550+ PA’s. Both have intriguing skill sets, and there is a debate to be had over how they should rank on the Phillies Top 30. I ranked Gillies higher, but I can see the arguments for Gose. So, make your pick and take your stand.

  1. I voted Gillies too. The only way that Gose surpasses Gillies, in my mind, is if he develops a significant amount of power. Gose probably has somewhat better tools and a higher upside, but Gillies just strikes me as someone who is going to become precisely what we project him to become (basically, another Shane Victorino, but with a little less power and better on base skills) and he is going to be a fan favorite.

I think it’s going to take a year to two to figure out what we have in Gose – but it should be fun watching him develop.

  2. I agree. Gillies seems the safer choice, and the better ballplayer as of now. He’s a much better CF, is just about as fast as Gose, and is a more patient hitter.

We’ll see how Gose develops, maybe he’ll fill out and hit for more power, or maybe he’ll become more patient at the plate. At this point, though, my bet is on Gillies.

  3. Gillies–gotta get on base to use your speed offensively.

Might change my mind if Gose learns to take 3 or 4 walks a week. His power potential is probably higher than Gillies’.

Love to see them race in a 60-yard dash.

  4. I love Gillies due to his ability to get on base, which I believe (based on reading “Moneyball” and not having seen anything else about it since) is likely a skill which will transfer well. I think his upside is a .400 OBP guy who can leadoff, steal literally a hundred bases a year, and score 150 runs on our team.

On the other hand, if he does not continue with his good OBP, I think he’ll still be a good 4th outfielder based on his defense and speed. Either way, I love him.

On the other hand, Gose is better than I thought he was, and might develop more power. You can’t tell with power, but I can see if he adds some bulk him becoming a great corner outfielder. My little dream is Dom at RF, Gose in LF, and Gillies in CF, with the OF as a whole hitting about 70-80 HR per year, stealing about 150 bases, with a collective .380 OBP, and a defense boardering on historic.

  5. Gillies…for all the reasons listed above. His plate discipline at a higher level is impressive.

Gose, as a 19 year-old in Clearwater is impressive in his own right though. Its a fun problem to have.

  6. I voted Gose, but I think we will happily debate their progress end of this year (i.e. I expect them both to improve/validate our current hopes).

Gose’s playoff was superior to his regular season, and I see in a few recaps so far that he has taken a walk or two and hit a bomb. I expect that he will progress in both areas this year (on base pct and power), and that will be exciting.

I am almost as impressed with Gillies, following his Spring. But I don’t think his game will jump as much as Gose this year.

At the end of this year, I think we will projecting Marquiss Grissolm out of Gose, and Shane Victorino out of Gillies. Both will make me happy, but I’ll take Grissolm!

  7. Gillies with his bat control, plate awareness, and speed seems like he could bunt himself to a .250 average.

I don’t think Gose has quite put as many pieces of his talent puzzle together yet.

  8. Gose is essentially Speed, more Speed and even more Speed at this point. That won’t work at higher levels. He’s got a ton of talent and upside though…it should be fun to see if he can harness it all.

  9. I watched Gillies in spring training and voted for him here but that’s not a knock against Gose who I like also. Watching Gillies play will make lots of Gillies fans. He sprints everywhere and its obvious that he loves to play the game.

  10. Gillies looks more polished. As everyone said, Gose could develop power instead of walks. I just doubt he will be a high average type hitter. Gose has a better arm so he could be more valuable on defense.

  11. I don’t think it’s fair to call Gose just speed. His peripherals were pretty good especially considering the young age and level he was at.

  12. Because the question is about 2010 only, it has to be Tyson Gillies. Gillies’ OBP will continue to be high because he will bunt and take walks when he is not hitting the ball hard. If the question was who will be better in the long run, then there would be a debate.

  13. I look at this from a relative perspective. Gilles numbers last year were so good – it will be hard for him to replicate them. Especially coming from that league. So his numbers this year may be somewhat disappointing. Do you really expect him to hit .340 at Reading? Plus I don’t see the power numbers going anywhere either.

Gose on the other hand has the potential to really improve his numbers. He faded late last year – probably due to fatigue. If he has the same type of season, but can sustain the .280 average and maybe take a few more walks or hit for a little more power it would really vault him up the prospect ladder.

I will conceed that Gillies will probably have a statistically superior season – but I think Gose’s stock will rise further – and thus his season will be viewed as more successful.

  14. If Jiwan James plays CF at Lakewood, I think he might have better numbers than Gose will at Clearwater.

  16. I voted Gillies based on the obp and higher level. I don’t expect him to match his stats of 2009, but if he comes close at Reading, that would make him a super prospect. He is the guy who excites me most from the Lee trade, although it will be great to be able to watch all 3 at Reading. I like Gose too and think he has a major league future. In Gillies, Gose, and James we have three solid CF prospects with very high ceilings.

  17. I was initially pretty disappointed with the inclusion of Gillies in the Lee trade, but after reading more about him, and hearing some of the reports out of spring training, I can definitely see why the front office went after him. Combined with their rather definitive approach towards handling Aumont (reverting to his high school mechanics and using him as a starter rather than a reliever), I’m generally feeling much more positive on the Lee trade these days.

That being said, looking at what Gose did – in his first year out of high school, without having to concentrate on pitching, and in full-season ball no less – I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a significant breakout from him in 2010.
He profiles slightly ahead of Gillies in speed, defense and arm strength, has a good deal more power potential, and – while the primary current difference between the two is plate discipline – I’m pretty confident that Gose’s patience will come around. I don’t think the Carl Crawford comparison (loosely) suggested for him in the Scouting the Sally writeup is too far off-base.
