Escalona Optioned

Left Handed Reliever Sergio Escalona was optioned to the minors today after struggling this Spring.  With JC Romero almost a certainty to begin the season on the DL, the remaining competition for his roster spot as a late inning lefty out of the ‘pen is between Antonio Bastardo and Mike Zagurski.  Although Bastardo has more “upside” then Zagurski, Zagurski has been far more effective thus far in Spring Training. Last years minor leaguers remaining in Major League camp include: Pitchers: Kendrick, Herndon(Rule 5), Bastardo, Zagurski, and Wasserman.

Infielders: Bocock, Chavez, Ransom, Valdez, Tracy.  Catcher: Sardinha  Outfield:  Mayberry and Wise.

  1. bastardo got blown up in one of his innings this spring…

zagurski’s been amazing in his 2 whole innings…

something tells me grapefruit league results won’t be the final determining factor…if it is, it’s the smallest sample size competition I can remember.

plus, if grapefruit results were indicative of roster spots, there’d be no debate as to who the big club’s 5th starter would be.

  2. “BP lists Sardinha with the highest breakout % of any player besides…. D’Arnaud”

Sardinha’s baseline is so low that even a breakout isn’t too impressive, I imagine. Oddly enough, Sardinha was once a top 100 prospect. He’s a terrific defensive catcher but he just can’t hit.

  3. Are we positive that they will keep the guys they have aside from Lidge and Romero? I mean, Herndon needs to stay on the team ALL SEASON COME ON HERNDON ONE MORE DOWN!!!!

    I like this ship. It’s exciting. — Can I get a towel?

  4. From what I’ve seen of Bastardo, he needs more minor league time. I’m disappointed actually that he hasn’t looked better. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Phils sign one of the remaining LOOGYs still holding out.
