Playoff series begin for both Reading and Lakewood this evening with Mike Stutes throwing for Reading, while Matthew Way gets the nod for the BlueClaws.  The Reading series is best of five, while the Lakewood series is best of three.

Lakewood suffered a bit of a blow with Justin DeFratus being placed on the DL with the ever popular oblique injury.

I am a little bit suprised that the Phils have not added another player or two to the roster of the big club as injuries and lack of bench production continue to be problematic for the Phils.  While the potential possibilities certainly are not game changers, adding Andy Tracy a power hitting left handed bat seems to make some sense.  With Greg Dobbs out another week to 10 days and Matt Stairs not having had a hit since the all star break, the addition of someone like Tracy who gives you a quality at bat seems to be a no brainer. Additionally, with the injuries in the ‘pen, the addition of Mathieson and/or Escalona seems to make some sense.  That still may happen when the Reading season concludes.  The addition of either Mathieson or Tracy would mean a corresponding 40 man roster move would be needed.

  1. Reading is playing a best of five, but Lakewood is in a best of three. The SAL final is best of five but not the first round.

  2. Agree they need Escalona, Mathieseon and Tracy. Maybe sooner than later, with the current injury situation.

  3. Transactions from Reading in preparation for the playoffs:

Added – Michael Taylor (OF), Fidel Hernandez (INF), Tuffy Gosewich (C)

Removed – Sergio Escalona (P), Carlos Leon (INF), Jorge Guerra (C)

  4. Now they just need to make room for Mathieson…

A little surprising they release Lopez when they need another starter with Happ hurting. Kendrick will be starting a couple of times with doubleheaders coming up. I guess he’s earned another chance.

  5. I’m surprised the big club hasn’t added Tracy but they’re sending Matheson to the AFL where he can continue to pitch. They’ll likely add Q Berry after Reading wins. Nice to see they added Taylor who I assume is healthy enough to finally play and get a few more at bats. Taylor and Brown in the playoffs together for what hopefully will be the first of many times.

  6. I’m a little disappointed that Taylor’s not with the big club, but, who knows, maybe they’re waiting to see what he does before they make a final decision. I am publicly going on the record, however, and saying, without hesitation, that Taylor is MUCH better than any other option that we currently have for a right-handed hitter/guy off of the bench. He could be their secret weapon for the playoffs. And, with the Ennis wild card roster spot, this move is feasible.

  7. Carpenter is on the 40 man so he could be a potential call up for the phills as well without sacrificing anyone of it.
