Box Score Roundup; August 19th

Other than the Lehigh Valley rainout, a full slate of action around the minors to get to. Before we go there, just a quick update on the general site layout. I’m going to be making some changes to the general site layout (ie, the side bars and stuff) over the next few weeks in an effort to streamline the content and make the site easier on the eyes/easier to navigate. Frequent commenter “BC” has stepped up and put in a solid effort in helping me organize the player profiles into an easier to access setup which will be revealed when completed. My hope is that this makes it easier to find up to date, accurate info on all of the relevant prospects. There will be more info on that at a later date. Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that if you show up and things look weird/different, don’t sweat it, things will get fixed. Thanks. Now, onto the games…

AAA: Lehigh Valley was rained out

AA: Reading won 18-1. I mean they really filled out the box score last night

* Domonic Brown went 2/6 with a 2B (5)
* Quintin Berry went 3/5 with a BB
* Tim Kennelly went 2/4 with 2 BB
* Yohan Flande got the start; 6 IP – 1 ER – 3 H – 2 BB – 4 K
* Zagurski and Escalona got an inning each
* Brian Rosenberg pitched a scoreless 9th, allowing 1 hit and K’ing 1. That’s now 5.1 scoreless IP at Reading. Does anyone know off hand how long his streak was at Lakewood before being promoted? On the season he’s at 0.81 ERA in 55.2 IP with 68 K and 11 BB.

A+: Clearwater lost 10-7.

* Freddy Galvis was 2/4 with a 2B (7)
* Matt Rizzotti was 3/3 with a BB and Cody Overbeck also collected 3 hits in 5 PA
* Edgar Garcia’s line wasn’t pretty; 5 IP – 6 ER (7 total) – 7 H – 0 BB – 4 K – 2 HR. The 2 HR hurt, he didn’t walk a better and only gave up 7 H.
* Dan Brauer pitched a scoreless inning, which now makes 5 straight scoreless appearances. He went through a terrible 4 appearance stretch back in July (14 ER in 4.2 IP), but hopefully he’s turned some kind of corner and could possibly still turn into a LOOGY type reliever. I really liked Brauer coming out of college, shame he hasn’t really put it together/stayed healthy

A: Lakewood won 3-2.

* d’Arnaud went 2/2 with 2 2B (32) and a BB as well as a SB (6)
* Gose went 0/3
* Jesus Sanchez with a decent start; 5.1 IP – 2 ER – 7 H – 2 BB – 7 K. Outside of one bad outing (his last, 6 ER in 5 IP) hes actually been pretty solid. He’s still a project, but an interesting project

SS: Williamsport lost 2-0.

* Collier went 1/4
* Buschini went 0/2 wit 2 BB, seeing his mini 6 game hit streak snapped
* Hewitt went 1/3 with 0 K

RK: GCL Phillies lost 6-3.

* Singleton was 0-2 with 2 BB
* Jarred Cosart started; 3.2 IP – 3 ER – 4 H – 1 BB – 2 K

Cosart is obviously being eased in after having some sort of surgical procedure after he was drafted. His IP by appearance

0.2
2.0
4.0
5.0
3.2

He’s shown flashes, allowing only 9 H in 15.1 IP, he’s struck out 13 against only 4 BB. I think he’s going to end up in Williamsport next year, if he’s fully healthy and has a dynamite spring I suppose he’d have a shot at Lakewood, but we can study that type of stuff at a later point.

Speaking of next season, maybe its time to put Colby Shreve on a milk carton. Haven’t heard anything about him or seen anything written about him. Maybe I’ve just missed it. Anyone?

  1. I live in CT and I’m really hoping to see the R-Phils this weekend. They play a 4 game set with NB RockCats. Hurricane Bill might throw some rain our way and I have the family schedule to workaround. I was looking for the pitching matchups. Flande went last night. Worley went the night before and Stutes the night before that. Concepcion and Cisco worked a double-header the time before that. Drabek had the outing before that. I guess Drabek will either go tonight @ Portland or be shut down so I’ll probably miss him. Friday night would be Cisco followed by Stutes & Worley? I’m assuming Concepcion has to puitch in there because they won’t have Flande pitch on 4 days rest. Brummett’s the only other starter on the roster and he’s listed on the 7 day DL.

    I’m just trying to make plans. I’m excited to see Dom Brown, Rosenberg (possibly), Kennelly, Susdorf, Berry and at least one of those pitchers.

    If I miss them this weekend, they’re back in town the 1st week of September.

  2. Shreve has been curiously absent all season and is now 15 months removed from TJ surgery. He should at least be throwing if not appearing in games. His MIA status is worrisome.

  3. Bellman, your best bet this weekend would to see Stutes pitch on Saturday..however, Rosenberg is usually given every other day off along with Mathieson, so Friday-Rosenberg pitches, then Mathieson Saturday. It heavily depends on the game, so if Stutes pitches well(7 innings), hell be followed by Mathieson then Escalona, but if he goes 6, Chance Chapman usually pitches the 7th

  4. Hewitt with 2 more fielding errors last night. The guy certainly isn’t in there for his glove.

  5. As for Colby Shreve, he just “friended” me on facebook. I’ll try to get a update for us on his status from the horse’s mouth.

  6. The kid Slate who got released, weren’t a lot of people high on him? Was he drafted out of high school? and did he have a history of arm problems, just interested. Pitchers to me are very hard to figure out, even a guy like Strasburg all that money and he could be another Prior.

  7. A couple of hits for Galvis last night. Am I imagining things, or is he starting to hit just a little bit? I see he’s at .247 but it seems like the last couple of weeks it’s seemed like he’s been having more 2 for 4 and 3 for 4 nights. Anyway, if he can be even a .250 hitter it seems like his defense could make him useful.

  8. Flande has been pretty darn good over last 6 starts. By my calculations (and I have a head cold that could affect my abilty to mathematize [like that word?]) over last 6 he has thrown 35 innings, given up 29 hits, 8 earned, 31 K vs. 12 BB. 1.17 WHIP. And a 2.06 era. Adjustment to AA made?

  9. @mikemike: “even a guy like Strasburg all that money and he could be another Prior.” Mark Prior went 18-6 for the Cubs in a year when they made the NLCS. Injuries have ruined his career, to be sure, but all things considered I’m sure the Cubs are still happy they spent that $10.5 million.

  10. I’d been curious about Shreve. It’s certainly not time to panic yet, but you’d think we’d have heard something about him by now.

    The kid Slate who got released, weren’t a lot of people high on him?

    I certainly was, and I’d have to think his injury problems are chronic if the Phils would go so far as to release him. This blog entry has a quote from Slate, but doesn’t necessarily explain the organization’s rationale. Whatever the case, best of luck to Kyle wherever he winds up.

  11. From David Murphy, reiterating that the Phillies didn’t slack in their effort to get Stewart.

    For the second straight year, the Phillies made aggressive plays for draft picks who were seriously considering college. They were thrilled to convince seventh-round pick Brody Colvin, a righthander whom some scouts felt had first-round talent, out of a commitment to LSU with a $900,000 bonus. The Colvin signing ensured that each of their top 10 picks would spend next season in the organization. But one coveted player who got away was 14th-round Jake Stewart, an outfielder who elected to attend Stanford rather than sign. But it wasn’t for a lack of trying: Club sources said that the Phillies made an aggressive play for Stewart, offering well above slot in an attempt to convince him to forgo college. Keep an eye on him 3 years from now, when he again will be eligible to enter the draft.

  12. what i dont understand is why we watch players that go to college rather than sign with us.
    Those players will be better/worse than they wouldve been if they signed with us, so well never truly know what we wouldve had.

  13. Cory, he means that the Phillies very well might try to draft him again in 2012 when he’s eligible. Teams often redraft guys they really like.

    I saw him pitch his last game against Trenton, and he was pretty impressive. He kept hitters off-balance, generated swings and misses, and was efficient after a bit of trouble in the first inning. He definitely has the ability to succeed at AA, and if he can do that he’s got a good shot to pitch in the majors at some point.

  15. With Amaro, Bruntlett, Mayberry and Taylor, they should just go ahead and establish the Philadelphia branch of the Stanford alumni club at the Hall of Fame level at CBP.

  16. Re Stewart: Sure, it’s the draft, don’t sign, and follow rule.
    Wasn’t Vance Worley a re-draft also?
    That seems to be working well.
    Losing a 14th round pick won’t hurt the Phillies nearly as much as what Stewart could lose if he doesn’t pan out.

  17. Does anyone know the post-season roster rules for the AA playoffs? For example, if the Phillies aren’t planning on bringing up Taylor to the big club in September, can they put him in Reading to get some more work in September (Assuming they make the playoffs).

    It will be interesting to see. Reading hasn’t won a title since 1995, it would be nice for the young guys if they could win one.

  20. maybe shreve can give us a couple of promising outings like Drabek gave us last year. That would give us something to ponder during the offseason as we put together our top 30 list.

  21. The R-Phils now say that Rosey has gone 33 innings in relief without giving up a run. Reading has 20 games left in the regular season plus a potential playoff series left. Wonder if Rosey can get to Mariano Rivera’s streak back in 1999 including post-season play, when he did not allow a run in his final 43.0 innings of that season.

  22. Does anyone besides me think winning in Reading would be a really good thing this year?

    I understand that player development is the #1 priority in the minors, and winning generally comes second, but when you’re this far in the season, I think important lessons can be had from winning in the minors.

    What do you think?

  23. Glad to see Cosart pitching on a regular (albeit limited) basis. Does anyone know the nature of his injury and what surgical procedures he had done? I’m glad that the Phillies are being very cautious with him in how they are easing him in to competition.

  24. On Kyle Slate, I was another one that was really high on him. I voted for him a couple of times starting at #25 in the reader’s poll last year. I don’t believe he had a history of arm troubles before being drafted, but I think he came from a cold weather state (meaning he didn’t get to pitch as much as some other kids). It really sounds like he just had a bit of bad luck in getting mono. Hopefully for his sake he’ll catch on somewhere.

    That sounds like good news on Shreve though. I for one didn’t want to see his face on a milk carton.

  25. As long as the Nats don’t hire Dusty Baker, Strasburg will be fine…Prior, Wood, now perhaps Cueto and a few others I’ve missed…the road is littered with young arms done in by him.

    It might be time to start the FlandeWagon again.

    Winning is always good. You create a culture of winning and it changes the way guys carry themselves and play.

    Someone else said this in the draft thread, but let Stewart go to Stanford, have his swing destroyed and then the Phillies will steal him in the fifth round in three years, just like Taylor.

  29. Don’t think Taylor will play any ball this off season. He did play last winter in the Hawaiian Winter Lg.

    So…he’s had that and this season at Reading and now at AAA LV. For a guy who has diabetes ( a strength and fatigue reducer) rest over the winter would better prepare him to compete for a place on the 25 in ’10.

    Like

  30. ArtD never thought about the diabetes, maybe you are right. But they need to know if he can play a lot and going to the arizona league against top players will tell us more. Remember they will have to make a decision about this kid next year. Do they trade him, or move Werth or Raul in a trade to open up a spot for him.

  31. Monty from what I’ve heard cosart had no surgery at all, but came down with an upper back/shoulder impingement in spring training which flare up again at the end of spring training. Apparently in his last two outings he’s sat at 94 so seems like everything is going well and the training staff did a good job

  32. Diabetes info is incorrect. Taylor does not fatigue or lose strength at any greater rate than the non-diabetics. In fact his discipline for managing his situation more than likely keeps him in better condition than his peers.

  33. Skunky –

    Why do you say that exactly? If he’s going to be on the big league squad at some point next year, he has to learn how to pitch into September.

  34. I highly doubt that Reading’s playoff drive will have any impact on Drabek. They’re already scaling him back. He won’t be abused or overworked for a AA team to win a championship.

    Like

  35. Phuture – He pitched 7 innings tonight, that’s not really scaling him back.

    I still don’t fall into the camp of having to limit his innings. I’m not saying that he should be out there 9 innings every game, but I see nothing wrong with a few more 6-7 inning games.

    Like

  36. Yeah but how many pitches did he throw? Were they high stress pitches? He allowed a total of 3 hits and 1 BB, and he only struck out 4. I doubt he threw over 100 pitches tonight. In his last start, he went only 4.2 IP, but he’d walked 2, K’ed 7, and allowed 5 hits.

    They’re going to protect his arm. Looking at tonight’s box, I’d be he didn’t labor at all in his outing.

  37. True, that’s a good point. I wish they kept pitch counts in the AA boxscores. It would really tell the story more so than innings.

  39. Prior to the start of the game, Myers spent time with young right-hander Julian Sampson, They worked on and talked pitching, much like Curt Schilling had done in the past.

    “He is one of our own, so why not help him,” Myers said.

    From ESPN.com, oddly enough Sampson had his best outing of the year striking out 3 in 3 innings pitched. Let’s not give up on Julian yet.

  40. According to my quick review, here’s the most IP in the Phillies Minors:

    Drabek 152
    Cloyd 148
    Naylor 146
    Worley 138
    Flande 136

    Carpenter and Savery also have around 130 innings.

    Naylor pitched 165 last year. The rest of the guys didn’t pitch the entire year to measure the increase in inning.

    Colby posted something on your Wall and wrote:

    “Yea sure. I just threw my third bullpen session today. It felt great and I can’t wait to be game ready. I have two or three more bullpens and then I’m ready for simulated games. You should see me pitching in instructional league. I’m hoping to get three or four starts there.”

    Hope this is helpful.
