This one could be a bit tricky…
Edgar Garcia
Joe Savery*
Antonio Bastardo
Carlos Monasterios
Chance Chapman
* I hope he starts here, but I have a feeling it will be Lakewood. If that’s the case, I suppose Dan Brauer is a candidate to start back here, if he’s healthy. I’m assuming Chapman will be a candidate, seeing as he’s already 23 and will be old for his level wherever he starts out. Tyson Brummett is also a possibility I’d think. Garcia seems like a logical choice, having spent 2007 in Low A, same with Bastardo and Monasterios.
Chapman was an old draftee. I’m guessing he is fast-tracked as a reliever. So he could start this year to get innings, or the plan may be to start him in the CLW pen and move him up to Reading if he does ok.

I’m liking the look of that rotation. Should be a fun one to watch for those in the Clearwater area.

Looks right on the money!

I hope Savey starts off in Lakewood only so I can see him, I go to about 10-12 lakewood games a yr and usually in the beginning of the season. Plus I think they still want to start him off slow and get his command under control.

Oooops. I think I missed Darren Byrd in that rotation.

I’d assume Byrd would be in the rotation.
Also i’m hoping that Scott Mitchson finally makes it to Clearwater (assuming he gets through the Rule 5 draft) but i’m not sure that’ll be the case.
I think it’ll be a big disappointment if Savery starts at lakewood, he’s too pollished to start that low, but i guess its possible given how conservative the phils can be with pitchers.

I think Byrd might repeat Lakewood. He wasn’t dominant this year and struggled at times. He’s a tossup at this point.

Yeah I was going to mention Byrd, but after seeing him in Lakewood I thought I could very well see him there again next yr.

It’s less organizational filler and more substance down here, so the decisions get a little tougher. If it were me, I’d agree with the first four, and I’d leave a spot open for Brauer if he is indeed healthy; at Chapman’s age and with his closer’s pedigree, I’d go ahead and get him in the ‘pen and try to fast track him to the Phillies next year. I’d also consider Mitchinson in this rotation; his issues are with health, not production, and his peripherals were excellent in Lakewood last year, so I think it’s time to start moving him up the ladder before he gets too old.
Unfortunately, I now see why the Phillies might want to start Savery in Lakewood. Garcia, Bastardo, and Monasterios seem like certainties for Clearwater, while Chapman, Brauer, and Mitchinson are also candidates. Maybe there is some logic to having Savery closer to Dubee and the Phils major league staff, but I’d rather start him in the warmer weather in Clearwater.

Looks good but I think it might be time to push Mitchinson and see if he’ll sink or swim. Is it me or doesn’t seem like we’ve been hearing about him forever? and if Brauer is healthy I think Savery starts at Lakewood

“Most baseball insiders feel that Nashville will be the setting for more baseball trades than in previous years. The Phillies will likely dip their toe in that pool, but they won’t be serious players for left-handers Johan Santana or Dontrelle Willis.”
That was in an article posted on the phillies website….
What do all of you think about that? Does anyone think the phillies should trade the house for either of those two? I mean, the free agent market for pitching is pretty weak.
I’d personally rather trade all of our top prospects than see Santana in a Mets jersey.

To open the season at Clearwater look for Bryd, Monasterios, Savery and Bastardo with Brauer and Michinson coming off injuries battling for the 5th spot. Michinson pitched effectively in several outings for Team Aussie in the recent World Cup games.
Here is what the beat writer for the Asbury Park Press wrote at the end of the 07 season: “Darren Byrd, was a disappointment early but was overpowering the last six weeks of the season and probably earned himself a trip to Clearwater next year. Scott Mitchinson came back from labrum surgery and was outstanding in recent outings. He’ll probably be a Class AA next year and if he can build arm strengh could be in the Phillies rotation, a la Kyle Kendrick.”

I’m not sure I am quite ready to put Mitchinson in the Phillies rotation just yet. If healthy he should probably start at Clearwater with severe limits on his innings. I might leave him in the bullpen and get him regular 2-3 inning outings every 3 or 4 days for the first month or two to build arm strength.

I would guess that weather/climate would be a major
factor in starting Savery in C’water rather than L’wood. It
might also be true for Brauer.
