Some injury related newsworthy items this Friday evening…

Lakewoood Pitcher Nicholas Hernandez was placed on the DL with left shoulder weakness just a day after he won the award for Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week.  Luke Wertz was activated to take his place on the Lakewood staff.

Wilson Valdez cleared waivers and was assigned to Lehigh Valley.  The trip may be very short lived as Jimmy Rollins left the game Friday evening appearing to re-injure his calf.

Relief Pitcher BJ Rosenberg, who started the season in Reading and was placed on the DL very early in the season was activated and assigned to CLearwater.  Roster room was made by assigning infielder Keoni DeRenne to extended spring training.

2010 VSL Phillies Debut Today

1. VSL/DSL, Other Stuff

The season opener for the VSL Phillies is today.  The league started yesterday but with 7 teams in the league it was the Phillies that got the bye on day one.  Last year the team was a disappointing 27-42, though it should be noted that 8 players from that team plus newly signed Venezuelan LHP Lino Martinez were present in minor league spring training and in line to make their GCL debuts this summer.

‘Pigs Weekend Update

A look at the ‘Pigs weekend with a few notes below.

Friday–Another night with little offense as Lehigh Valley opened a series against Gwinnett and were shut out 3-0.  Three early runs by Gwinnett off of starter Joe Savery, and the fact that the ‘Pigs couldnt move a runner past second base all night led to the loss. After giving up 3 runs in the first inning, Savery (0-3) settled down, but his line was a fairly typical line, 6IP 4H 3ER 5BB 3K. John Mayberry was 2-4 for Lehigh Valley who left 13 runners on base and have now fallen to 8 games below .500. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update →

Bastardo Back to Philly, Lidge to the DL

Brad Lidge was placed on the DL once again with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to May 9, after making just 4 appearances for the Phils.  Called up from Lehigh Valley to take his roster spot is LHP Antonio Bastardo, who has allowed just 1 hit, and no earned runs in his 5 appearances in Lehigh Valley since being sent down a couple of weeks ago.  Bastardo has struck out 8 in 3.2 innings or work for Lehigh Valley.

Update: The corresponding Lehigh Valley roster move has RHP Alex Concepcion been activated from the DL (turf toe).

One more notable transaction today, Reading reliever Chance Chapman was placed on the DL with a Right Oblique Strain.  P Tyson Brummett, who has been exclusively in releif this year, and quite well for CLearwater was called up to Reading.

Here’s something new. When I write my weekly notes column on Sunday, I figured that I’d solicit some reader emails/questions and add a mailbag on to the end, and do it on a weekly basis. I’ll probably only be able to answer a few questions, but I thought it would be something interesting to try. So, if you have a question about something prospect related, or want to hear my opinion on something, send an email to phuturephillies at gmail dot com and put MAILBAG in the title. If you don’t put mailbag in the title, I probably won’t read it. Try and make the questions specific, not just things like “do you think Domonic Brown is a good prospect”, because I’m going to spend most of my notes columns making comments about players in general. So give that a shot and we’ll see how it goes.

How has the bullpen been so far, and how do you prepare mentally as compared to your role as a starter? I enjoy it a little bit more because I like to come to the field knowing I’m going to play almost every day.That plays a big part in the happiness of my pro career so far.  To prepare mentally, you have to work hard every day because it might be the day you pitch, or the next day or the next day.
