Sunday Mailbag

Thank you for all of the emails. I received a few emails with very similar questions, so I just picked one and went with it. If I didn’t get to your email this time, I’ll try and do better next time. I’m currently working on a big draft related piece that covers lots of philosophical/economical topics, but I’m going to wait until I have all of the data to analyze. I’ve got a few more things cooking, so stay tuned. Check below the fold for my answers to your questions.

August 20th Discussion

Sorry about the lack of a daily posting yesterday. Life keeps getting in the way of my minor league baseball obsession. We’re back and better than ever on this mid August Friday. Only a few more weeks left in the regular minor league season. Last night’s boxes

GCL Phillies won 5-0.
Williamsport won 4-2.
Lakewood lost 8-5.
Clearwater lost 12-2.
Reading lost 15-10.
Lehigh Valley won 5-2.

Mailbag?

Got a question for me about the draft or my writeup? Have questions about specific prospects? Let’s do a mailbag. Any topic is on the table, just try and ask me specific questions, not just “which players do you like” type queries. Only 2 rules. Don’t post your question here, email it to me at phuturephillies at gmail dot com. Second rule, put “mailbag” in the title of the email. If you can do that, and your question is specific and not ridiculous, I’ll answer it. Go!

August 18th Discussion

There were games last night. So we have box scores.

GCL Phillies won 8-3.
A bunch of guys played in the NYPL all star game.
Lakewood lost 4-3.
Clearwater box (game is in a delay, I’m setting this up before the game ends)
Reading won 9-7.

* Brody Colvin was struck on the leg by a line drive and departed in the 3rd. This tweet says he’s fine.

August 17 Review

Just a reminder, use this spot for discussion of last night’s games. Post all draft stuff in the Draft Wrap-Up post. Thanks.

GCL Phillies won 7-6.
Lakewood lost 4-2.
Clearwater lost 9-2 and won 6-4.
Lehigh Valley lost 7-4.

This Utley guy appears to have a decent skill set, but he’s way too old for this level.

Around the System, Starters, Lower Half

Lakewood

Brody Colvin, 20, 23 starts, 6-7 with a 3.17 ERA; 122IP 109H 39BB 108K, 1.20 GO/AO; .236 opp. avg., .214 vs. LH, .253 vs. RH, .206 with RISP, 1.21 WHIP, 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA since July 1. After a rough April, Colvin has been dominant throughout the rest of the year. His innings are being monitored as he is already at 120+.

Trevor May, 20, Clearwater, 16 games, 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA; 70IP 53H 61BB 90K, 0.76 GO/AO; .212 opp. avg., 1.63 WHIP. Lakewood: 8 starts, 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA; 48IP 34H 18BB 67K, 0.87 GO/AO; .199 opp. avg., 1.08 WHIP. Totals: 24 games, 10-7 with a 3.97 ERA; 118IP 87H 79BB 157K, 0.80 GO/AO, .207 opp. avg. May seems to have gotten both his confidence and his control back in Lakewood.  Hitters have struggled against him at both levels, as May clearly has Low A mastered. Around the System, Starters, Top Half

A look at the starting rotations for the Top levels of the Phils Minor League system with a look at the lower levels coming up early next week.

Lehigh Valley

Drew Carpenter, 25, 22 starts, 7-9 with a 3.90 ERA; 122.1 IP 122H 45BB 91K; 1.09 GO/AO; .264 opp. avg., .231 vs. LH, .291 vs. RH, .223 with RISP; 1-3 with a 4.81 ERA since July 1; 1.37 WHIP. Carpenter has not pitched well at all recently.  His spot on the 40 man may be in jeopardy if this continues.

Brandon Duckworth, 34, 21 games (14 starts), 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA; 88.2 IP 75H 37BB 92K, 1.14 GO/AO; .234 opp. avg., .261 vs. LH, .210 vs. RH, .205 with RISP, 3-1 with a 3.65 ERA since July 1; 1.26 WHIP. Duckworth has done all that has been asked of him and done it well. Continue reading Around the System, Starters, Top Half

August 9th discussion

Just a note. The signing deadline is next Monday. At this point, don’t read anything into the chatter about who will and won’t sign. There have been tons of cases where kids were geared up and ready to go to school, only to sign in the last few hours. We’ll find out next Monday, no sense getting bent out of shape before then. Now, the games

Williamsport lost 6-3.
Lakewood lost 5-4.
Reading lost 9-4.
Lehigh Valley lost 5-2.
