Around the System

A month has passed since we last looked at the Corner Infield, so here it goes.

Lehigh Valley–Tagg Bozied, 31, .254/.398/.582 in 67 AB’s; 5 HR 15 RBI; 17% bb rate/30% k rate; .375 vs. LHP, .216 vs. RHP; .286 with RISP. 11 games at 1B with 1 error (.990); 8.91 R/F; 4 games in LF without an error. 

Jeff Larish, 28, .266/.347/.537 in 177 AB’s; 12 HR 31 RBI; 11% bb rate/26% k rate; .234 vs. LH, .277 vs. RH; .208 in May; .265 with RISP. 45 games at 1B with 2 errors (.955); 9.20 R/F; 2 games at 3B with 1 error. Larish has been very inconsistent.  As of late, very hot.

Pete Orr, 32, .241/.267/.328 in 57 AB’s; 1HR 4 RBI; 5 SB; .143 vs. LH,255 vs. RHP; 2% bb rate/24% k rate; .214 with RISP. 9 games at 3B with 2 errors (.926); 2.78 R/F; 4 games at 2B without an error; 2 games at SS without an error.  Too early to really pass judgement.  He started hot, and has cooled.

Ronnie Belliard, 36, .253/.312/.355 in 186 AB’s; 3 HR 22 RBI; 3 SB; 8% bb rate/17% k rate; .278 vs. LH, .242 vs. RH, .217 with RISP, .233 in May. 46 games at 3B with 7 errors; (.948); 2.78 r/f. Singleton moving back to 1B…for now

Other Stuff

So this is the word. I have two really quick thoughts on this:

* He’s 19. He has plenty of time. Even with his slow start and the ankle injury (which didn’t help the slow start), he’s one of the youngest players in the FSL. He has all kinds of time, and this includes learning the outfield. If playing 1B for 2 months or even the rest of the year helps his ankle heal and gets him on track, fine.
* If his future is in Philadelphia, he’s eventually going to have to learn to play LF, because he’s not displacing Ryan Howard at 1B, and no one is taking Ryan Howard’s contract. Unless salaries inflate beyond belief over the next 3 years. But that’s a decision for 2-3 years down the road.

In the meantime, everyone take a deep breath on Singleton and relax. Time is on his side, yes it is.

I present to you my new statistical toy: the Prospect Power Rating (PPR)

Prospect Power Rankings

So here’s the thing. I get lots of ideas in my head, and most of them I either discard, or I begin working on it, then give up half way through and move on. The SONAR project, something I started years ago, is somewhere in category 2, because I have a lot of ideas for it, but its incredibly in depth, it takes a ton of time, and its imperfect. Until I figure out the ways to remove most of the imperfections, it will remain dead. But in the meantime, I had an idea that kind of comes out of that semi-failed project. I was thinking it would be fun to have a way to take a quick and dirty look at how our prospects are performing, but without doing a ton of heavy lifting and adjusting. I figured once I built the spreadsheet, I could do a lot of copy/paste work, and it would basically update itself. And I think I was right. Which means I should be able to maintain this with little effort, which means I won’t get bored with it and discard it. Maybe. Anyway, I figured I’d unveil it here, and we’ll see how it goes.
