Box Score Recap – 4/5/2014

Box Score Recap

Sean O’Sullivan got hit around some, but Phillippe Aumont worked his way around two hits to work a scoreless inning in LV’s loss. Two hits a piece for Cameron Perkins and Kelly Dugan – Perkins’ were both doubles – he’s got three already on the young season, picking up where he left off in 2013. Ken Giles struck out the side, (not in order, of course), to pick up his first AA save, after AA repeater Jay Johnson struck out two in a clean eighth inning.

A rehabbing JA Happ beat CLR, while Brian Pointer had his second triple in as many days. Dylan Cozens with two hits and Larry Greene was on base twice in support of a fine outing from Alejandro Arteaga for LKW – 2R, 5H, (1 HR), 6Ks 0BB, and he threw nearly 2/3 of his pitches for strikes.

Not going to get the graphic up today, but here’s the link and a spot to discuss Saturday’s action.

Threshers at Dunedin; April 5, 2014

Game Reports

The Threshers faced JA Happ on a rehab assignment tonight. Happ proved to be a formidable foe for the young team.  Happ retired the Threshers in order in 3 of his 5 innings.  He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk. He struck out five.  In the 4 innings after Happ exited the game the Jays bullpen limited the Threshers to 2 hits and a walk.

Meanwhile, The Jays greeted starter Jon ProsinskI with 4 consecutive hits in the first inning.  ProsinskI settled down and got out of the inning allowing only 2 runs.  Continue reading Threshers at Dunedin; April 5, 2014 →

Box Score Recap – 4/4/2014

Box Score Recap

Cameron Rupp went deep again. He’s on pace for probably a lot of home runs or at least more than two, I bet. Also thing I would bet – Kyle Simon is not happy with his AAA debut. Just a hunch. Hector Neris, on the other hand, survived his unscathed. Don’t sleep on the 25-year-old Dominican. He put up pretty solid peripherals in Reading, and could be a bullpen piece for the big club sometime soon, especially if his HR rate normalizes now that he’s out of the Reading launching pad.

Cameron Perkins had two hits, including a double, while Severino Gonzalez started his season well – 1R 4H 1 BB and 3K in 5 IP. Reports from @longenhagen had Seve at 89-90 and touching 91 early, then fading later in the cold.

CLR walks it off in the tenth against Dunedin. Brian Pointer had a triple in that contest, and Ethan Stewart allowed just five base runners in seven IP – he only struck out one, and walked three, but allowed just two hits. A note there – The Jays have Dwight Smith‘s son, Dwight Smith Jr. For those who don’t remember Dwight Smith, he and Jerome Walton were all the rage back in ’89. Walton won the NL ROY and his Cubs teammate Smith got second, ahead of one-time Phils Gregg Jefferies and Charlie Hayes.

Carlos Tocci and Andrew Pullin had doubles, while Jesen Therrien got rocked in relief, as Lakewood took the loss. Tyler Viza made his full-season debut. He was a 2013 draftee out of JuCo, and played GCL last year, so he’s skipping Williamsport, (for now, at least). Looking forward to seeing what he can do with the opportunity.

Threshers Home Opener vs. Dunedin; April 4, 2014

Game Reports

Tonight we were treated to an old fashioned pitchers’ duel in a 10-inning Threshers 2-1 victory.  All three runs were tainted by errors, 2 were unearned.  Through 9 innings, both teams had been able to manage only 1 run and 2 hits each.

Ethan Stewart put together a quality start in his first outing of the season.  After a first inning sequence that began with an infield error, a 5-pitch walk, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to center, Stewart Continue reading Threshers Home Opener vs. Dunedin; April 4, 2014 →

Clearwater Threshers at Dunedin Blue Jays; April 3, 2014

Game Reports

Tonight’s game was the season opener for both teams.  One of the perks of being a season ticket holder in the Florida State League is that you can gain admittance to any FSL park when your team is playing.  I took advantage of that tonight and sat about 10 feet from Charley Manuel.  Cool.  Cooler still, Dunedin posts pitch speed on their scoreboard. Box Score Recap – 4/3/2014

Box Score Recap, , , , , , , , , ,

Welcome to the season, folks. And welcome to the season Cameron Rupp. 1-2 with 2BB and his first home run of the year. David Buchanan pitched well, and the bullpen was perfect, including a 3K inning from Jeremy Horst.

Jesse Biddle didn’t really get it done in his debut and the Fightins offense, less so – I left the Portland pitching line in there so you could see what happened. Henry Owens happened. The game was (mercifully) called by rain after 6, so I guess it’s hardly a no-hitter, but yeah…not good.

Mike Adams nice rehab outing highlights an otherwise uneventful CLR shutout loss.

And finally, all the Blueclaws (except Gabriel Lino) with hits to support a solid if not overwhelmingly impressive looking start from Mark Leiter. Larry Greene was the big star, going 3-4 with a triple and 4 RBI. Good start for the big man in his second turn at A-. That lineup ought to be a ton of fun to keep tabs on.

Reminder that you can follow me and should feel free to tweet at me anytime – @bxe1234. Looking forward to another year of watching the results and discussing the best and worst these Phuture Phillies show us as they progress towards to show.

While We’re Predicting Stuff (With Links)

Other Stuff

So since it’s MiLB Opening Day, and Matt did a set of predictions, and so did a bunch of other people, our pal and TheGoodPhight.com’s Cormican included, I thought I’d get you warmed up for Box Score Recaps with a set of predictions of my own. Enjoy!

Season Predictions

Other Stuff

Last year’s predictions went pretty well so I thought I would give it another try this year.  These predictions are based purely on opinion, and have no guarantee of coming true.

1. Both Maikel Franco and Jesse Biddle do not exhaust their prospect eligibility.  Both are not called up until rosters expand.  Biddle puts up good numbers but is blocked in the major league level and left to make adjustments in AAA.

2.  Yoel Mecias comes back healthy and is a borderline Top 5 prospect in the system.  He is promoted to Clearwater after dominating Lakewood for a few starts.

3. Roman Quinn plays SS in Clearwater when he is back on the field, the Phillies begin experimenting with him at 2B after J.P. Crawford is promoted at the beginning of August. Continue reading Season Predictions →

Positional Preview: Relief Pitchers

Other Stuff

For sanity’s sake I have not included all relievers in the system.  For the most part, low minors relievers are not prospects unless they move very quickly or have elite stuff.  Additionally it is hard to tell whether a pitcher is actually a starter or a reliever.
