Threshers Recap – 4/7/2019

Clearwater (1-2) lost to Dunedin, 2-1.

Kyle Young (0-1, 4.50) retired the first two batters he faced and then gave up 2 runs on 4 consecutive singles.  He walked a batter before ending the first inning.  Then, he retired the next ten batters in succession, striking out three.  Continue reading Threshers Recap – 4/7/2019

Threshers Recap – 4/6/2019

Clearwater (1-2) beat Dunedin 8-3.

Alejandro Requena (1-0, 1.80) had a strong outing.  He pitched 5.0 innings and held the Blue Jays to one run on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking our eight.  He threw 72 pitches, 52 for strikes (66.7%).  He throws a 4-pitch mix of FB, CB, SL, CH.  He had preety good command of each, hitting his spots, keeping the Jays batters off balance, and pitching backward sometimes to great effect. Threshers Recap – 4/5/2019

Clearwater (0-2) blew a middle inning lead and lost to the Dunedin Blue Jays, 7-3.

Damon Jones came out firing.  He struck out 8 batters in 3.0 innings.  His FB sat 92-94 and touched 95 twice in the first inning.  His slider was deceptive and he used his CB to keep hitters off balance.  Problem was he “Aumontian” with his control.  He threw 74 pitches, just 37 for strikes (50%).  The Jays stacked their line up with right-handed bats, and took pitches.  Jones pitched from behind a lot, only 5 of 13 first pitch strikes.  He missed a lot with his FB.  Usually up and away.  I mean up and away in that the catcher had to come out of his crouch to catch the pitches.  Continue reading Threshers Recap – 4/5/2019

Open Discussion: Week of April 1, 2019

The Phillies began their 2019 season with an opening day win on Thursday.  They followed that with a second-game win on Saturday.  As I type this, they are tied with the Braves on Sunday Night Baseball.  So far, the Phillies have run out the same 8 players, in the same defensive positions, and in the same slots in the batting order all three games.  Bet that hardly happened last year. Spring Training 2019 (March 30th)

Saturday was the final day of Spring Training 2019.  The trucks were on hand for the trips to Allentown, Reading, and Lakewood.  Players took part in their final drills before a five inning scrimmage between two groups on Ashburn Field.  Two more groups met on Roberts Field.  And, all pitchers not charting or on rehab were tossing on Schmidt Field. 2019 Roster Assignments (updated again on March 31st, 2:00PM)

***(update: the Threshers finally posted their preliminary roster.  I had correctly projected 24 of the 26 players on their roster.  just sayin’.)

The Phillies told the players where they would begin the 2019 season Friday morning at the Complex.  By dinner time, three of the affiliates had released these assignments.  No surprise that Clearwater failed to release theirs.  But, there were many surprises among the assignments. Today was the last scheduled spring training game for the minor league camp.  The players received their assignments early this morning.  The Lehigh Valley and Reading squads bused over to Dunedin while the Clearwater and Lakewood squads played hosts at the Complex.  An intrasquad game was held on Schmidt Field among the remaining players for pitchers who needed to get their work in. Spring Training 2019 (March 26th)

The Phillies left Clearwater late Monday afternoon.  Tuesday, the Complex was almost back to normal – a few Phillies’ fans, more affiliates’ fans, some players’ family members, and still a few professional autograph hounds.  We should soon see the last of that last group until after this year’s crop of newly signed draft picks make their Complex debuts.
