Threshers Recap – 4/26/2019

Clearwater (9-13) beat Tampa, 5-3.

Kyle Young picked up his first win of the season with six solid innings.  He allowed one run on 4 hits while walking none and striking out six.

Luis Carrasco (10.00) entered to start the seventh, and issued 4 walks around a force out.  He was mercifully lifted ( 21 pitches, 4 strikes) in favor of Keylan Killgore (0.00) who was making his first Threshers’ appearance.  After issuing an RBI walk to the first batter he faced (grr!), Killgore struck out two batters to strand two of three runners he inherited.  He pitched a one-hit eighth but picked up 2 more strike outs before turning over the reins to Jonathan Hennigan (0.00) who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 4th save.

The Threshers scored first on Dalton Guthrie’s RBI single in the third inning and Matt Vierling’s 3-run HR (2).  They added an insurance run in the sixth on Jose Gomez’ bases loaded walk.

Guthrie (.333) went 2-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Vierling (.297) went 2-4 with 2 runs scored, double, HR (2), 3 RBI.

Of note in the Transaction section is a deal between the Phillies and Colorado.  The Phillies had DFA-ed pitcher James Pazos.  They have since worked out a deal with Colorado and will receive infielder Hunter Stovall in return.  Stovall was selected in the 21st round of the 2018 draft out of Mississippi State.  Half of his career starts have been at second base.  He has also played third short, and all 3 OF positions.

Stovall has been assigned to Lakewood.  Maybe, the Phillies are going to discontinue playing infielders “out of position” at second base.  And, maybe they have decided to accelerate their plans for Alec Bohm.  The Phillies were likely going to leave Bohm in Lakewood until the all star break.  Lakewood is a young team, mostly 18- and 19-year-olds.  They like to keep an older position player with their young players.  Like when they kept Darick Hall in Lakewood for all but a week of the 2017 season.

But, Bohm is a top prospect.  He’s hitting extremely well.  If he needs to be challenged at the next level, the Phillies aren’t likely to keep him in Lakewood to mentor young hitters.  So, maybe this signals an imminent promotion to Clearwater.  (oh please, oh please, oh please)

(Sorry for the brevity in this and the other recaps.  Finger’s better, company has gone back to PA, but I have a new injury.  Won’t affect ability to report but will keep me home a few days.  Should be back at the Complex and Bright House next week.)

Lehigh took the lead with 3 runs in the third inning on Deivy Grullon’s 3-run double.  They added 2 runs in the fourth on solo HRs by Lane Adams (5) and Gift Ngoepe (1).  They added 2 more in the fifth on Adams’ 2-run single.

Lehigh’s 13-hit attack included a 3-hit game by Andrew Romine (.344) and 2-hit games by Shane Robinson (.347), Jan Hernandez (.279), Deivy Grullon (.380), and Lane Adams (.259).

  1. Agree….perhaps Bohm will now get the next level advancement with Stovall now at LKW.
A new challenge for him awaits if that is the case.
Glad to see Matt Vierling get out of his mini-slump also.

  2. I went looking for a Fernando Lozano on Baseball Reference. A guy who pitched in the Mexican Leagues in 2018 showed up. He pitched in 3 games, 3 innings total. He’s 19 yo and gave up 3 hits and 1 ER. He had a K and BB. BR lists the Mexican League as AAA level. Maybe a scout saw him and said, why not take a chance on the kid. Then again, it could be an entirely different guy.

Stovall, the pickup in the Pazos trade, is 22 yo. He had a nice Rookie League season last year hitting .296/.321/.588 with 16 dbls, 6 triples and 10 HRs. Playing for Asheville in the Sal this year he’s hitting .281/.414/.439. He can play nearly everywhere but catcher although he hasn’t played 1B yet but that should be easy for this guy. I don’t think he’ll be added to our top 30 anytime soon but he could be a nice flexible College player who, as Jim pointed out, could be good for the younger guys on the LKW team.

    1. When you are a shade over 5’6″ extremely doubtful they will play him at first base unless an in-game emergency should arise..
But his versatility everywhere else will come in handy for managers.

  3. Jon Hennigan….maybe be another closer candidate climbing up the rung.
Long lean lefty with mid-90s velo and low 80’s slider…..13 K/9…with great control.
Older than most all…turns 25 in August…so expect a Reading debut next month sometime.

    1. Speaking of random relievers, Keylan Killgore made his season debut. He did well in Williamsport last year and looks to have skipped over Lakewood. Another lefty, though I don’t know what his arm is like.
