Around the Systen, Starters, Lower Half

Lakewood–David Buchanan, 22, 15 starts, 8-5 with a 3.48 ERA; 93 IP 88H 24BB 59K; 1.20 WHIP; 5 HR allowed, .253 vs. LH, .254 vs. RH, 1.09 GO/AO; .254 opp. avg.,.295 with RISP; 5-5 with a 4.78 ERA since May 1.  After coming out of the gate very strong, Buchanan has settled back down to put up fairly pedestrian numbers over his last 10 starts.

Jesse Biddle, 19, 15 starts, 3-6 with a 3.55 ERA; 78.2IP 66H 42BB 74K; 1.37 WHIP; 4.8BB/9; 8.5K/9; 0.85 GO/AO; .229 opp. avg., 214 vs. LH, .233 vs. RH, .243 with RISP; 3-3 with a 2.60 ERA since May 1.  Has looked very good, however, walks will be a real issue if they continue at this rate.

Garrett CLaypool,22, 17 games (13 starts); 3-3 with a 3.16 ERA; 79.2IP 61H 29BB 93K, 10 HR allowed; 1.13 WHIP; 0.54 GO/AO; .211 opp. avg; 3.2BB/9; 10.5K/9; .223 vs. LH, .201 vs. RH, .170 with RISP; 1-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 11 starts since June 1.  CLaypool has performed well. WHen the opposition hits him however, they hit him hard (10 homers). Continue reading Around the Systen, Starters, Lower Half

Around the System–Starting Pitching, Top Half

A look at the Starting Pitching for the top half of the organization.  Look for the report on the lower half (Lakewood, Williamsport, and GCL at the end of the week)

Lehigh Valley

Brian Bass, 29, 4-5 with a 4.54 ERA in 15 starts; 85.1 IP 97H 33BB 49K; 9 HR allowed, 1.52 WHIP, 2.79 GO/AO; .289 opp. avg., .292 vs. LH, .286 vs. RH; .263 with RISP; Has gone at least 6 innings in each of his last nine starts.  The ‘Pigs rotation has been decimated by injury and call ups and Bass has been the one constant.  Constant in the sense that he has gone out there every five days.  Some good, some bad, and some ugly. Lehigh Valley

Erik Kratz, 31, .277/.376/.509 in 159 AB’s; 10 HR 28 RBI; 12% bb rate, 18% k rate; .375 vs. LH, .234 vs. RH, .275 with RISP, .266 since May 1. 47 games caught with 2 errors, and 6 passed balls. 30% CS rate. Kratz should have been in the majors backing up Ruiz the last 6 weeks.  Doing everything he can at AAA.

John Suomi, 30, .259/.302/379 in time throughout the system this year (58 AB’s); 1 HR and 5 RBI. Organizational guy.

Lehigh Valley

Rich Thompson, 31, .261/.342/375 in 161 AB’s; 2HR 7 RBI; 21/23 SB; 13% bb rate, 20% k rate, .250 vs. LH, .266 vs. RH, .250 with RISP, .269 since May 1.  48 games in the OF with 1 error (.989). Thompson is still providing good defense, good speed, and a decent bat at the top of the order.

Brandon Moss, 27, .257/.343/.495 in 202 AB’s; 10 HR 40 RBI; 1/3 SB; 11% bb rate, 25% k rate; .231 vs. LH, .267 vs. RH, .328 with RISP, .267 since May 1. 47 games in the OF with 1 error (.987); 7 OF assists.  Has been hitting for good power and a clutch hitter.

Delwyn Young, 28, .236/.280/.384 in 229 AB’s; 7HR and 26 RBI; 6% bb rate, 27% k rate; .232 vs. RH, .238 vs. LH, .183 with RISP, .273 since May 1.  45 games in the OF without an error , 2 OF assists. Not much Young has done has impressed me.  Horrible BB/K rate and horrible with RISP.

John Mayberry, 27, .212/.271/.327 in 52 AB’s since being sent down, 1 HR 6 RBI; 9% bb rate, 19% k rate.  Has had a few key hits but generally has looked lethargic since coming back down.

Scott Podsednik, 35, .255/.286/.404 in 47 AB’s with Lehigh Valley. 0HR 0RBI; 2/2 SB; 29% k rate. Podsednik will miss another three weeks with a foot issue.  He has not shown enough to suggest he is still major league worthy. Continue reading Around the System–OF

Around the System–Middle Infield

Not a whole heck of a lot to discuss in the middle infield from a prospect standpoint. Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez are the two who are on the 40 man roster, while Edgar Duran has been worth watching as well.

Lehigh Valley

Josh Barfield, 28, .271/.309/.389 in 203 AB’s; 4 HR 28 RBI; 7/13 SB; 6% bb rate/18% k rate; .245 vs. LH, .280 vs. RH, .213 with RISP; .344 in May. 53 games at 2B with 4 errors (.983); 4.49 R/F. Around the System–Relievers

A look at the relief corps around the system, with plenty to be excited about.  Stats are through Tuesday May 24, 2011.

Lehigh Valley

Mike Zagurski, 28, 12 games, 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA; 7 saves, 12.1 IP 9H 7BB 20K; 1.29 WHIP; .220 opp. avg., .273 vs. RH, .200 vs. LH; .091 with RISP.  Zagurski has thrown very well, although it hasn’t transferred in his limited time called up to Philly.  Needs to hone the control a bit.

Jason Grilli, 34 Has been on the DL with back issues for the past week plus. 15 games, 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA; 18IP 16H 7BB 22K; 1.46 GO/AO; .232 opp. avg., .259 vs. LH, .214 vs. RH, .045 with RISP.  Grilli may have been on the verge of a callup with the Phils when their injuries were mounting when he suffered one of his own.  He has thrown extremely well all year.

Michael Schwimer, 25, 16 games, 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA; 1 save; 25.2 IP 20H 13BB 35K; 0.62 GO/AO; .208 opp. avg., 1.28 WHIP; .333 vs. LH, .143 vs. RH, .156 with RISP. Schwimer started off a bit slow, but has been near unhittable as of late.  His command has been excellent.  Continue reading Around the System–Relievers

Around the System–Starters

A look at the current starting rotation at each level in the organization. Clearwater, as expected, standing out.

Lehigh Valley

Vance Worley, 23, 5 starts, 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA; 25.2IP 26H 7BB 26K, 1.28 WHIP, 5 HR allowed, .260 opp. avg., 0.96 GO/AO; .143 with RISP; .257 vs. LH, .262 vs. RH.  Clearly the Phils #6 starter, he has pitched well in Lehigh Valley excluding his last outing.

Nate Bump, 34, 8 starts, 2-3 with a 5.44 ERA; 43IP 60H 11BB 23K; 1.65 WHIP; 1.51 GO/AO; .335 opp. avg., .397 vs. LH, .292 vs. RH, .352 with RISP.  It simply hasn’t been pretty for Bump this year, with slight improvement over his last two starts.  He is getting hit hard and often. Around the System–Catcher

Stats and observations behind the dish. Starting pitching report next some late week or weekend..

Lehigh Valley

Erik Kratz, 30, .275/.390/.394 in 69 AB’s; 6HR 14RBI; 14% bb rate 19% k rate; .310 vs. LH, .250 vs. RH., .263 with RISP. 7/17 CS (41%), 3 passed balls and 1 error in 22 games. Simply can’t ask for much more than what Kratz has given. Should be in Philly and Sardinha should be in Allentown.

Joel Naughton, 24, Hitting .231 in the 4 games he has played thus far. 0/5 CS in 4 games caught. Continue reading Around the System–Catcher

Around the System–OF

A first look at the outfield, with no one truly standing out (other than Brown who has just over 50 AB’s) after the first 6 weeks of the 2011 season.  Look for the catcher report early next week.

Lehigh Valley

Domonic Brown, 23, .358/.426/.642 in 53 AB’s; 4HR 11 RBI; 1/2 SB. 11% bb rate 19% k rate. 14 games in RF without an error. 3 assists. Injuries have dominated his early season.  When healthy has been excellent.  Expected back mid-week from his sprained thumb.

Brandon Moss, 27, .253/.357/.484; 5HR 24 RBI; 0/1 SB; 13% bb rate 27% k rate; .212 vs. LHP .274 vs. RHP; .357 with RISP. 23 games in the OF without an error.  3 assists; 1.52 R/F.  An inconsistent start for Moss who has hit for power and very well with RISP. Continue reading Around the System–OF
