‘Pigs Weekend Update
The weekend summary for Lehigh Valley along with some notes and a transaction.
Friday–The Lehigh Valley streak of not having won a series all season remains intact after their 8-4 loss to Toledo on Friday evening. The four game series was split. Toledo scored two in the first inning off of starter Brian Mazone, however the ‘Pigs bounced back with a run in the 2nd on a Willy Taveras RBI single. Toledo scored single runs in the 3d and 4th, making it 4-1. Again, the ‘Pigs stayed in the game with a Dane Sardinha Sac Fly in the 4th and an RBI double by Cody Ransom is the 5th that made the game 4-3. Mazone left after six, with no decision (6IP 9H 4R 3ER 0BB 5K). An RBi single by Ransom tied the game, but Lehigh Valley relief pitchers had a rough night with Ryan Vogelsong (2-4) taking the loss after giving up a run in the 8th. Toledo added three in the ninth off of Oscar Villarreal. Big nights offensively for Willy Taveras (2-4,r,rbi, sb), Cody Ransom (3-5, 2b, 2rbi), Dane Sardina (2-3,r,rbi), Brian Bocock (3 hits) and Neil Sellers (2 hits). Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

‘Pigs Weekend Update
A look at the Lehigh Valley weekend. See below for recaps, notes and a transaction.
Friday–STarter Joe Savery was hit hard very early in a five run first inning and that was all CHarlotte needed to beat the ‘Pigs 8-4. Savery threw six shutout innings after the tough first, leaving with a line of 7IP 9H 5ER 4BB 2K. The ‘Pigs cut the lead to 5-1 in the 5th on a Rich Thompson RBI single, but a three run 8th off of reliever Ehren Wasserman put the game away for Charlotte. Andy Tracy hit his 7th homer of the year, a two run shot, to make the game borderline respectable. Neil Sellers and Rich Thompson both had three hits apiece for Lehigh Valley. Not a whole heck of a lot to talk about behind the dish. Like most organizations, a scary lack of depth. The guy most want to talk about is Sebastian Valle, who has been mildly disappointing in the first third of the season. Look for the next edition of Around the System, looking at starting pitching, sometime next weekend or early the following week after the draft excitement settles a bit.

Lehigh Valley Weekly Report
Yet another in a fairly long line of awful weeks for Lehigh Valley, going 2-5 on the week, and are now at 20-33, and in last place of the Northern Division of the IL, 11.5 games behind division leading Syracuse.

Around the System–OF
The second trip around the system, looking at the progress or lack thereof, of the OF’s in the system.
Lehigh Valley
John Mayberry, 26, .284/.346/.503 in 183 AB’s. 9HR 32 RBI; 7 SB 0CS; .326 vs. LH, .271 vs. RH, .232 with RISP, .271 in May; 8% bb rate; 23% k rate. 1 assist, 1 error. Mayberry has been solid all year with his splits looking much better then in years past. He still strikes out alot and his average with RISP needs improvement but I expect to see him in the majors outside the Phillies organization by this time next year.
Rich Thompson, 31, .276/.333/.366 in 145 AB’s. 1HR 10 RBI; 12SB 1 CS; .125 vs. LH, .306 vs. RH; .286 with RISP; .298 in May; 8% bb rate; 15% k rate. 1 error, 2 assists. Thompson continues to do everything asked of him and do it well (except hit lefties). I am admittedly biased on Thompson, as his hustle makes up for his shortcomings.
Chris Duffy, 30, .242/.305/.379 in 182AB’s. 3HR 23 RBI; 6 SB 1 CS; .342 vs. LH, .215 vs. RH, .412 with RISP; .219 in May; 9% bb rate, 21% k rate. 2 assists, 1 error. Duffy slowed down after a concussion kept him out of the lineup for several games, but having watched Duffy, he plays all out.
Willy Taveras, 28. Continue reading Around the System–OF
News of the Day
The Phillies have signed OF Willy Taveras, as assigned him to Triple A Lehigh Valley, filling in the hole created by the departure of DeWayne Wise. Taveras was most recently in the Nationals organization and hit .200 for the Nationals in 37 plate appearances this year. Taveras, still just 28, is a .274 major league hitter in over 2400 at bats. Additionally, he has stolen over 20 bases five times at the major league level.
On the injury front, reliever Brian Rosenberg, who has struggled with injuries all year was placed back on the DL with a Right Lat Strain by Reading. Taking Rosenberg’s spot on the Reading roster is Pitcher Ty Taubenheim.
Pitcher Nelson Figueroa, has accepted his assignment to Triple A and will be shortly reporting to Lehigh Valley. This will leave the ‘Pigs with a roster decision to make on their pitching staff.
