The Phillies engineered a 5-player trade with the Detroit Tigers. The teams had talks regarding LHP Gregory Soto back during the winter meetings but nothing came of it. Detroit approached the Phillies Thursday to resurrect the discussion. They quickly and quietly came to an agreement. Jim Salisbury broke the story of the negotiations early Saturday afternoon. Soon thereafter the deal was done.
In addition to Soto, the Phillies also received infielder Kody Clemens (son of the Roger Clemens). The Phillies parted ways with 3 members of their 40-man roster including a couple of key contributors in last season’s playoff run – OF Matt Vierling, INF Nick Maton, and C Donny Sands.
The Phillies still have an opening on their 40-man roster. They have also created some competition for bench roles. Dalton Guthrie and Jake Cave might be able to slide into the vacated roles. Maybe not. Perhaps player agents will see the bench openings as a way for their clients to get major league playing time.
