The Affiliate Scoreboard

Logan O’Hoppe was assigned to the Angels Double-A team, the Rocket City Trash Pandas.  He did not get into the game last night.  I only mention this because his team is playing the Cubs’ Double-A team, the Tennessee Smokies.  I would expect Ben Brown to be assigned here (no assignment transaction has been posted).  It would be kinda funny if their first games after being traded are against each other.

  1. Ricketts with a great two game start, he’s probably too good for CWater and will be sent up to Jersey before too long.
What do we think of our 2021 draft class? Beyond Painter, the results have been terrible. How about the 2020 class beyond Abel?

    1. Well, Griff McGarry. The high schoolers ares still young/injured. Ethan Wilson makes it all look bad. Still a little early to judge the whole thing

    2. Normally, in any given draft class, if you can get 1 starter out of it, you’ve done your job. The bar sounds low, but it’s really difficult to get that. If you can get an elite starter out it, it’s jackpot city.

2021 could be an all timer. Painter, McGarry, and Rumfield got the Phillies Nick Nelson and Donnie Sands. There are no complaints about this draft.

2020 is tough because there were only 5 rounds. Abel is the headliner and Ragsdale got the Phllies Sam Coonrod. Again, no complaints.

2019 has Stott, Erik Miller, Gunner Mayer. Jadiel Sanchez just helped the Phillies get Thor. I don’t think people should be complaining here.

2018 has Bohm and Vierling and the jury is still out.

  2. Want to see if lHP Plassmeyer progresses enough to be in the talking next spring for the big club.
Four years ago he was a SEC starting pitcher at Mizzou and maybe he can recapture that production again. He had decent metrics with both Seattle and Tampa Bay in their respective systems but they decided to move him…in the Giants system, not sure what happened to him in the PCL…everything went haywire on him in April and May…lost command and control it appears. Hopefully Cesar Ramos and the Phillies can unlock his potential.

    1. At the minimum, Plassmeyer will be at ST. He’s likely depth with Hans Crouse at Lehigh but we’ll see what happens.

    1. May ways to look at it….the AAA 2022 metrics alone, or the total package as a professional, or even the total package from college.
The way I see it….he has given up 49 HRs in 356 innings in the minors…..1.2 average per 9
Or just his LHC results….has been ticking down with improvement from his Sacramento metrics.
Let’s see where it is after next month.

    1. He could be for sure. However he is 22 same age as O’Hoppe. He’s a big fella and really came on this past season with The Torero’s this season.

He may just make me get over it as they say…

  3. Where has Viars been. I think I saw Jim mention his name once over the past month or so…

But with you Murray so far its been a challenge with the past couple of drafts.

    1. DMAR….read last month on Steve Potter’s site he was injured in June and was out a few weeks….so maybe he is just slow coming around.

    2. He’s in the FCL learning how to take instruction. If he listens, he’ll get back to Clearwater. If not, he’ll watch another draft class push him down the depth chart.

          1. He ran into a wall/fence chasing a fly ball. Unfortunately, he hit where the support pole was strongest. I think he had a concussion bad enough to be hospitalized. That was back during XST. He last played in a scrimmage (as far as I know) on May 22nd. The injury occurred between this date and June 6th when the FCL season started and he was placed on the 7-day IL. Haven’t heard anything lately.

      1. Oh yikes hate to hear that Jim. And Denny I don’t think that was Cozens at all. You know that he was your boy…

        1. D, Viars came in with power he was able to generate with his upper body. That will only carry him so far in the minors. He needs to incorporate his legs into his powerful swing. He’s young and the transition didn’t provide the instant gratification that kids need. Now, he’s a proper mess at the plate with slow hands to boot.

If he listens to the coaches and instructors he’ll work through it. If he doesn’t listen to the team guys and instead listens to a “personal” instructor, he’ll remain a hot mess like others who went that route before him.

          1. Unfortunate to hear that. I had high hopes for Viars to start the year and I don’t think I was alone in that.

        2. He was but in ST we met Steve Potter in the parking lot in Dunedin and he told us that DC was hard healed and just wanted to do it his way.

  4. And I love this Lee Hao Yu kid. At just 19 he appears to have an approach mature beyond his years

    He’s got 9 2Bs; 1 Triple and 7 HRs over 27 BBs to just 41 Ks sporting a 825 OPS

    1. Let’s hope the Taiwan govt does not need him or force him to return home for any military service commitments.

  5. Rojas gets 3 hits to say thank you for not being traded! I still have high hopes for him, even with marsh in CF.

    1. With Marsh in the fold, there’s no more rush for Rojas. He can take his time to develop. If he wants to be on a ML roster (as a starter or backup), he’ll need to force the issue.

      1. Rojas is Rule 5 eligible this Nov…..if unprotected I wonder if a team will actually draft him and keep him on their roster, or try to do the minimum IL game–on and off, all through the 2023 season( .the draftee player must actually be active for at least 90 days)
Teams like the Pirates, Reds Royals, DBacks, As or Rox could take a flyer on him.

        1. Would be surprised if the Phillies didn’t protect him on the 40. They will have room after the season.

        2. No doubt some teams will try to stash him. It also helps that his defense is pretty good. I think a bad team can have him as the 4th OF.

          1. I assumed the Phillies would protect him, unless he is traded.
However, if he is protected and not traded, I think they then DFA Muzziotti.or Ortiz.
If they decide to protect three catchers….then Harper, Castellanos, Schwarber, Marsh, Vierling…..Rojas and either Muzziotti ot Ortiz could make up their 7 man OF 40.

            1. Rojas should be protected. If the Phillies have to DFA one of Muzziotti or Ortiz, I’m thinking Muzziotti will get the ax. They are both the same age but if Ortiz has the power.

The bigger question is whether or not Luis Garcia gets DFAd. Garcia is only 21 but his career OPS at high-A is .587.

            2. Rojas will definitely be protected. Any top 10 prospect would be automatic. Also I think they keep Muzziotti protected as well. I see them trying to flip Ortiz prior to the Rule 5 deadline for something.

Also see one or both of Coonrod and Crouse gone prior to Rule 5.

I agree with some on here that Luis Garcia is probably taken off 40 man roster. They’ll absolutely try and keep him in the org though.

            3. Yeah….Luis Garcia has just not come around…..and yet another $$$$ seven figure signing that comes up short.
Wonder if the Phillies are near the top of a list on busted 7 figure international signings.

  6. 2021 draft also included Logan Cerny who was traded for Garrett Stubbs

He’s having a pretty good year

for the year, slashing – .253/.360/.472

He struggled early with and OPS of .583 in the first month. months since show OPS of .796/.985/.830

For the season, 15 HR and 35 stolen bases with a lot of Ks … 110 in 316 ABs

    Pretty interesting season thus far

  7. wow, I can’t see any of the young Phils outfielders even near that. Another Curtis.
