1. Our 4 full season teams are all under 500 and are collectively 49 games under 500. That’s hard to do. Is any other system worse than ours record wise? Tough season, and to think how excited we all were to see this season start. We’ve had a few guys have good years but more have not. Hiring new development staff is much needed and can only help next year.

   1. I think the system can make a leap next season.

      Stott could push for a promotion. Young guys like O’Hoppe, Garcia, Rojas and Muzziotti are surging and will hopefully carry that into next season. Abel and Painter have cirrus-level ceilings. With a little luck (lord knows the Pharm hasn’t had much of that in the past decade), we could see most of these players continue to advance, along with Wilson, Viars, Martin and others from recent drafts and younger international players like Yhoswar Garcia showing progress.

      What we’re really missing (and haven’t had since Dom Brown) is that 65-70 FV level mega prospect that sets tongues wagging. Maybe one day …

   2. The Mets 4 minor league teams are 53 games under .500.

      But the White Sox are 92 games (!) UNDER .500.

3. I just think that the Phillies don’t know how to pick talent and worst is that they can not seem to develop any talent either. They seem to get lucky now and then with a Hoskins but look around baseball they haven’t been very good at either. I remember a long time ago they had a choice between two assistant GMs that were with the Phillies. They chose the wrong one and the other one went on to the Royals and built that good KC team with all the good young players that they made a 5 year run with. I think it was Mike Arbuckle who they didn’t choose and went to KC. I think the most important thing for them to do at this time is to build up the system. I also don’t understand why when JT who was going on o be a free agent before last year didn’t get traded at that deadline. I don’t get why the Phil’s didn’t talk to him about trading him during that deadline to a contender for a good prospect or two and tell him to help the team get better by getting traded for a couple good ones and then also tell him we would give him the best contract and bring him back to the Phil’s for the start of the new season. Get Harper to tell him to do it too. That would have been a win win for both. The Phil’s could have gotten a stud prospect or two and JT could have played in the playoffs and gone for a WS and then signed with the Phils again before the start of the new season. We did sign him anyway we should have tried it. We need prospects that will pan out nor suspects.

   1. Yankees did just that with Aroldis Chapman….traded to the Cubs to help them win their WS…Yankees got Gleyber Torres from the Cubs…Yankees re-signed Aroldis after the WS was over.

      1. Yes Romus, I am no Yankee Phan. I live in Virginia but I am a 4 for 4 Philadelphia phan. But Romus that’s what winners do. They think outside the box at times to make their team better. If they Yankees can do that why can’t the Phil’s?? Maybe that’s why they are competitive and we just tend to tease our our Phans. Phillies do it every year. Make a run to tease us then run out of gas. I love the team but we need to win again

            …Hinkie also has been saying that for years when Klentak was the GM……he never thought outside the box.
            Many ways of keeping the pipeline in the farm, alive and well at its beginning, but Klentak just failed to take advantage of what was there.
            Still early to see how Fuld and Dave D do ….but hopefully they will be more creative than their predecessors.

   2. Rocky, the Phillies were in a win now situation in 2008 as all our stars were in their prime. Can you imagine the outrage of the Phillies fans if they started a rebuild? Ownership would have roasted alive. Ruben did a very good job from 2009 to 2011. In 2012 the injuries started to mount up and we had no young players to replace them. Lastly, Mike Arbuckle did draft well but it is much easier to draft when your team drafts in the top ten consistently like the Royals did and we’re a bad team.

4. Yes I know Romus I have read the site for some time now and had seen what you guys have said. I just now decided to start to post. I think you build a team from your system and then add pieces through free agency and smart trades. Like the Phils did when they made the good run with Howard Utley and then signed Rual and traded for stud pitchers. What are your thoughts about doing a rebuild at this time? In my view and I may be wrong this team as currently made is just a 500 team. No better no worse. But sooner or later Bryce Harper may get frustrated with this situation. I also think right now Wheeler is good very good but I do feel he is 30 now and only will have two or three good years left and then will be like arrietta and kind of just hold on. Plus I think Nola is going backwards. I almost would like to see them blow up the whole team to get stud prospects and then in two or three years be a real contender again.

   Even if they hold the course they are in now I don’t see them being a real contender for a couple of years and then Harper JT and Wheeler will be older and possibly on the downside. Seeing a young Phun team would be worth it. I am tired of all the AAAA players on their team now.

   1. Another rebuild… think guys like Harper.JTR and even Hoskins may not be on board, at least at the start….unless it is some sort of modified retooling… as the expression goes.

      Though I sometimes wonder what the Yankees would give up for JTR!
      Four years left on his deal….and they are not happy with Sanchez.
      Philies can roll the ball with Marchan and/.or O’Hoppe I think for the next few years.

      1. Lol sorry but those guys would be part of my rebuilt. They been retooling forever. Yes I love JTR but what if we can get a stud pitching prospect in high A and a good plus outfielder that’s close too??? I mean Hoskins is also a dime a dozen like Ruff. Plus maybe Baum can play first for a bit. ???? Just a thought. Also you and Hankie are really good with your thoughts here.

         I almost think they can’t be any worse with a total rebuild. I mean this is a team being held together by bubble gum. They are just a tease.

5. Also. Think about it what do you think you get for Harper???? He is in his prime now and really finally playing well. When they get really competitive again he may be on downside. How many prospects and what type is he worth??? Also think about the money saved on his contract? Maybe use it it sign a younger free agent with similar talents to Harper ????

   1. The money is still the issue. Harper is still owed 10 years, ~$263M. Not too many teams can afford (or want to) to absorb that contract.

      In general, Harper was one of the youngest FAs in history because he started his MLB career at age 19. Most FAs are in their late 20s or early 30s. If a player is a FA in their mid 20s, odds are he was cut for poor play or injuries. So you won’t be able to sign a younger FA with talents similar to Harper, unless he’s an elite talent (like Juan Soto) which means you’ll have to pay up anyways.

   2. I really like to hang onto Harper….he already has outperformed his yearly portion of the contract.
      And as Scott Boras says….. he sells jerseys! 😉

6. Is Gabriel Cotto the first guy to pitch 6 innings in a game this year for us? It hasn’t happened much. He threw 80 pitches and didn’t give up a run until the 5th. I’m not sure what to make of him because he was terrible in the GCL in 2018, 2019 and for 11 innings this year, walking everyone. Then he gets promoted to Clearwater and has success for the first time; how’s that work?

   He was a fairly high pick for us a few years back and is listed at a very projectable 6’5″ 175lbs.

   1. Also a PR Academy kid……they produce pretty good payers…though Jesmuel Valentin and Jan Hernandez did not quite make it to the show with the Phillies.

   1. Phillies are a bad team they really aren’t that good and plus they did draft high for a while a s what did they get bad players. If you really think this Phillies team is any good you have been drinking the cool aid. They are a 500 team.

8. Lastly guess it’s real easy to draft when you draft so high. That’s why the Phil’s missed in a couple top three pics over recent years and missed on some top 10. But I guess you’re right it’s easy to draft when you pic high.

9. Also I didn’t say rebuild the great team with utley and Howard. They were a great team. Built by they farm system. That’s how you make a contender that will contend for years. Look at Dodgers built the Team up filled in gaps after they were good with free agents and trades. After the Dodgers built up their system they have the prospects to get those players from the Nats. I meant Phils should rebuild now.
