Phillies Affiliates’ Recap (8/13/2021)

Lehigh Valley got a quality start from a pitcher making his Triple-A debut.  Reading got blown out.  Jersey Shore made it interesting at the end.  Clearwater dropped two.  The FCL Phillies used the long-ball (and a few rehabbers) to win their first game in weeks.  And, the DSL teams each swept a doubleheader with their top prospects each returning for a couple at bats.

Lehigh Valley (40-45) beat Scranton, 6-4.  Adam Leverett made his Triple-A debut and pitched six innings of 2-hit ball.  He allowed a solo HR, walked two, and struck out six.  Damon Jones (7.27) was awful in 0.1 innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk.  Mike Adams (1.42) stranded an inherited runner and went 1.2 innings without allowing a base runner.  Cam Bedrosian (3.21) picked up his second save with a one-hit inning and 3 strikeouts.

The IronPigs scored 2 runs in the second inning on a 2-run single by Ruben Tejada.  They added 3 runs in the fifth on a ground out and a 2-run double by Matt Vierling.  They tacked on a run in the ninth with an RBI single by Vierling.

Matt Vierling (.243) went 2-5 with a double and 3 RBI.  Rafael Marchan (.193) went 0-4 with a walk.  Nick Maton (.198) went 0-5.

Reading (33-54) lost to Akron, 9-3.  James McArthur (1-5, 5.13) pitched five innings and gave up 4 runs on six hits.  He walked none and struck out ten.  Nick Lackney (4.32) pitched 1.1 innings and gave up 5 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.  Aneurys Zabala (8.31) allowed one of two inherited runners to score and pitched 1.2 innings giving up a hit and a walk.  Brian Marconi (1.91) pitched a clean inning.

Reading took an early lead with a run in the first on Bryson Stott’s solo HR (6).  They scored a run in the fourth on Madison Stokes’ solo HR (9).  And, they scored a run in the eighth on Stott’s second solo HR (7).  Stott (.267) went 2-4 with 2 RBI.  Ortiz (.225) went 0-3 with a walk.

Jersey Shore (39-48) beat Hudson Valley, 8-4.  Victor Vargas (2-1, 2.00) pitched six innings and held the Renegades to one run on 5 hits and a walk.  He struck out five.  Aidan Anderson (5.34) picked up his fourth save but gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in three innings.  He struck out four and gave up 3 solo HRs.

The BlueClaws scored their first run on a wild pitch in the second inning.  They plated a run in the third on an RBI double by Logan O’Hoppe.  They scored 2 runs in the fourth on another wild pitch and a fielder’s choice.  They added a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Herbert Iser.  And, another run in the sixth on an RBI single by O’Hoppe.  They scored their final 2 runs on wild pitches in the eighth.

O’Hoppe went 3-4 with a double and 3 RBI.  Cole Stobbe went 0-5 with 5 strikeouts.  Iser went 2-4 with a double and RBI.

Clearwater (39-43) dropped a doubleheader to Tampa, 6-0 on a one-hitter and 5-3.

Game One:  Samuel Aldegheri (0-1, 2.92) pitched 2.1 innings and gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks.  2021 NDFA Matt Russell (7.71) allowed one of one inherited runners to score and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings on 3 hits.  He struck out two.  2021 NDFA Tommy McCollum (11.57) pitched 1.1 innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. Victor Lopez (2.57) stranded one of two inherited runners and finished off the game getting his only two batters out, one on a strikeout.  #2 pick Ethan Wilson went 1-3 breaking up the no-hitter in the sixth inning.  Luis Garcia went 0-2 with a walk.  Casey Martin went 0-2 with an HBP.  #12 pick TJ Rumfield went 0-2 with an HBP.

Game Two:  Eduar Segovia (0-3, 5.73) pitched three innings and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and a walk.  #11 pick Andrew Baker pitched two innings, walked one, and struck out three.  #8 pick Jason Ruffcorn pitched a scoreless, one-hit inning striking out one.   The Threshers finally scored in the sixth inning of the second game.  #13 pick Jared Carr hit a 3-run HR.  He went 1-3.  Martin went 0-3.  #2 Wilson went 1-3.  #12 Rumfield went 1-3.  2021 NDFA Freylin Minyety went 0-2 with a walk.

FCL Phillies (11-6) returned to action with a bunch of rehabbers in the lineup and beat the DSL BlueJays, 10-7.  2020 NDFA Jake McKenna (27.00) started and went one inning giving up 4 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks.  He did strike out three, though.  Wilson Gherbaz (3-0, 1.35) was awarded the win allowing one run in one inning on no hits and 2 walks.  2021 NDFA Jared Wetherbee (0.00) went two innings, allowed one hit and no runs, and struck out two.  2020 NDFA Corey Phelan (1.50) gave up one run in one inning on one hit and 2 walks.  He struck out one.  Tyler Adams (4.50) pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on 2 hits, no walks, and 4 strikeouts.

The Phillies scored in each of the first five innings.  In the first inning, Baron Radcliff hit a 2-run HR.  They score 3 runs in the second on Johan Rojas’ 3-run HR.  They tallied 3 runs in the third on Jamari Baylor’s 2-run HR and Nick Matera’s solo HR.  And, they tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth on solo HRs by Radcliff and Baylor.

Johan Rojas went 3-4 with a HR and 3 RBI.  Adam Haseley went 0-3 with a walk.  Cornelius Randolph went 0-3 with a walk.  Baron Radcliff went 2-3 with a walk. 2 HR, and 3 RBI.  CJ Chatham went 0-4.  #3 pick Jordan Viars went 1-3 with a walk.  Jamari Baylor went 2-3 with 2 HR and 3 RBI.  Nick Matera went 2-3 with an RBI.  Guarner Dipre (.133) went 1-2 with a walk.

The Phillies hit six home runs that accounted for all 10 runs.  The Blue Jays had only one extra base hit, a triple.  But, they ran wild on the bases going 10 for 10 on stolen base attempts – 4 off McKenna/Matera, 4 of Gherbaz/Matera, and 2 off Wetherbee/Matera.  The scoring isn’t very clear, the Jays scored a run on a steal of third and a steal of second without any more explanation.  Matera was also charged with 4 passed balls.  I kinda doubt some of the scoring decisions in this game starting with who was awarded the win.

Rojas had an assist at home plate.

DSL Phillies Red (12-10) swept the DSL Nationals, 4-2 and 2-1.

In game one, Rickardo Perez (.306) returned to action and went 1-2.  Randy Vasquez (.381) went 1-3 with an RBI.  Solardo Rodriguez (.262) went 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI.  Joel Valdez (2.31) logged 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.  Jared Loyo (27.00) went 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  Diego Linares (1-0, 0.00) went 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

In game two, Javier Fuenmayor (3.16) logged 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.  Neyker Ibarra (4.50) went 1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.  Sergio Sanchez (5.14) earned his first save with a perfect inning and 2 K.

DSL Phillies White (14-7) swept the DSL Brewers1, 3-1 and 3-0.

In game one, Yermal Flores (.200) returned to the lineup and went 1-1 with a double and a walk.  Jose Leanez (.326) went 1-1 with 2 RBI.  Jaydenn Estanista (3.18) logged 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.  Jonathan Petit (3-0, 0.00) sent 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

In game two, Giussepe Velasquez (1-1, 2.63) logged 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.  Daniel Mejia went 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.  Eiberson Castellano (1.42) picked up his third save with 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

  1. Thanks Jim for so many details. Great to see so many guys coming back finally. It looks like several will be back on their regular team soon. Good to see O’Hoppe continuing to put together a solid season. Ortiz, who many of you had as starting in Philly next year after a good first week, is down to 225 at AA. He has to make more contact if he’s to survive in AA.

    1. And of course, great game by Stott. He needs to finish strong to earn his ticket to AAA next spring

      1. His ISO is over .200 this season…he is showing power, and an OPS of >.800… good commodities to have for a middle infielder.

        1. A lot of that is from his “get your feet wet” time in Hi-A. His AA numbers are just okay, but have picked up lately.

          1. A 181 ISO and an OPS of .780 in AA ball are still good numbers with the larger sampling…and taking into consideration a slash of .295/.333/.511 over his 90 PAs he seems to have picked up his game going down the stretch.

  2. Good to see Bryson Stott tap into some power. Would be great for him to have a strong final six weeks because he is the club’s top minor league trade chip (don’t believe they’d deal Painter or Abel) this winter.

  3. Great pitching by Adam Leverret with Da Pigs last night. Is he just an emergency call up or is he there to stay? Victor Vargas did a one game stay a couple weeks ago., didn’t know if this is the same situation.
AL has had a pretty meteoric rise from Being drafted in 2019 in 15th round. Same year in GCL and Williamsport. Nothing in 2020. Then Jersey, Reading and LHV this year. He didn’t do too well at Reading but still was brought up last night.

    1. Leverett’s first 3 starts at Reading we’re awful but then the next 3 were good (each improving on the last).
