Phillies Affiliates’ Recap (7/29/2021)

Lehigh Valley and Jersey Shore were rained out.  Reading lost a winnable game.  Clearwater swept a doubleheader.  The FCL Phillies were suspended with a tenuous lead.  And, both DSL Phillies’ teams won.


Lehigh Valley (33-41) at Rochester was postponed to be made up on July 31st. 


Reading (30-45) lost to Somerset, 7-6. 

James McArthur (5.40) tossed four two-hit innings.  He walked none and struck out four.  Tyler Carr (6.03) pitched two innings and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits.  Carlo Reyes (1-1, 0.00) pitched one inning and blew the save giving up 4 unearned runs on 3 hits.  Jonathan Hennigan (8.00) pitched two innings and gave up an important insurance run on a two-out walk and double that stymied the Phils’ comeback.

The Phils’ scored first with three runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Grenny Cumana and Matt Kroon and a wild pitch.  They closed within 2 runs with a run in the eighth on Luke Miller’s sac fly.  The Phils fell short with 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth on Jack Conley’s solo HR (3) and Madison Stokes’ RBI single.

Bryson Stott (.260) went 2-5 with 2 runs scored and a double.  Madison Stokes (.257) went 1-5 and committed the error that prolonged the 4-run seventh.  Brock Stassi (.286) went 0-1 with 4 walks.  Matt Kroon (.290) went 3-4 with a triple and RBI.


Jersey Shore (33-41) and Brooklyn were postponed to be made up on July 30th.


Clearwater (37-37) swept Fort Myers, 4-2 and 3-2.

Game One:  Samuel Aldegheri pitched four, one-hit innings.  He walked two and struck out five.  In three appearances and eight innings, Aldeghari has yet to allow a run, has given up 3 hits, issued 4 walks, and struck out twelve.  Sam Jacobsak (1-0, 4.91) got his first professional win.  He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 6 walks.  Carlos Francisco (2.84) earned his third save getting one out.  He stranded two inherited runners, walked a batter, and struck out a batter.

The Threshers collected four hits, but together a 4-run inning to grab the win.  They broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning.  Recently almost traded Abrahan Gutierrez started the scoring with a 2-run double.  Edgar Made brought him home with an RBI double.  After a sacrifice bunt, Made scored on a wild pitch.

Casey Martin (.268) went 0-2 with a walk.  Jadiel Sanchez (.300) went 1-3.  Gutierrez (.287) went 1-2 with a walk and 2 RBI.

Game Two:  Rafael Marcano (2.53) threw a 31-pitch first inning and was relieved.  He gave up 2 runs (1 ER) on 4 hits and struck out a batter.  Recently promoted Victor Lopez made his Low-A debut and pitched three, 2-hit innings.  He struck out three.  Gabriel Yanez (2.14) followed with three, 4-hit innings, also striking out three.  Maikel Garrido earned the win, starting the eighth with the ghost runner on second.  He loaded the bases with one out, then struck out the next 2 batters.  As a staff, four Threshers’ pitchers issued no walks in the game.

After falling behind in the top of the first inning, the Threshers started to claw back with a run in the bottom half on Abrahan Gutierrez’ RBI single.  They tied the game in the third on Nicolas Torres’ solo HR (4).  After Garrido’s heroics in the top of the eighth, Rixon Wingrove won the game with a 2-out, RBI single to walk off the sweep.

Casey Martin (.261) went 0-4.  Jadiel Sanchez (.297) went 1-4.  Nicolas Torres (.256) went 1-4 with a solo HR (4).  Rixon Wingrove (.222) went 1-4 with an RBI.  Abrahan Gutierrez (.288) went 1-3 with an RBI.


FCL Phillies (10-6) was leading the FCL Yankees, 3-2, when the game was suspended to be completed on August 4th.  There were no outs in the bottom of the third with runners on the corners and a run already scored.  Josh Gessner (2.79) had allowed 5 hits and struck out four.  Felix Reyes (.294) went 1-2 with a 2-run HR (2).


DSL Phillies Red (3-7) beat DSL Cardinals Blue, 13-5.  Rickardo Perez (.286) went 2-5 with an RBI.


DSL Phillies White (7-4) beat DSL Cardinals Red, 4-0.

    1. Aldeghari has a 4-seam fastball that sits 91-92 and touches 93. He’s got a sinker that is 91-93. He throws a changeup (77-79) and curveball (76-77) that have little difference in velocity.

      1. Thanks Jim. That might not play in higher levels but let’s wait and see.
        Howard and two minor league arms going in deal. It’s a shame, he just didn’t show enough in the majors so far. Less pressure in Texas, maybe he’ll do better.
