Threshers’ and Affiliates’ Recap (7/25/2021)

Lehigh Valley and Jersey Shore posted victories yesterday.  Reading and Clearwater weren’t as fortunate.

Word is finally out regarding the misfortune that hit the Complex.  There is no COVID IL in the minors.  So, it will not be readily apparent who is out because of a positive test, contact tracing, or a legitimate injury.  So, be careful about any speculation regarding players going onto the IL.  The guy who tried to bait me into revealing COVID info about players is gone.

Lehigh Valley (32-40) beat Worcester, 3-0 on 2 hits.  Emergency call-up from Low-A,  Victor Vargas pitched five shutout innings and held the Sox to two hits and two walks.  Mauricio Llovera (5.00) and Jake Hernandez (6.55) each tossed two no-hit innings.  Daniel Brito (.412) went 1-4 with a triple and RBI.  Darick Hall (.202) went 1-3 with a solo HR (7).  Jorge Bonifacio (.316) went 1-3 with a solo HR (1), walk, and 2 stolen bases.

Reading (29-43) lost to New Hampshire, 3-1.  Francisco Morales (2-8, 6.95) pitched five innings and gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and a walk.  Billy Sullivan (1.84) struck out two in one inning of relief.  Logan Landon (.200) went 2-2 with a walk and RBI.  Bryson Stott (.261) went 1-4.  Madison Stokes (.258) had the only other Phils’ hit going 1-4.

Jersey Shore (32-40) beat Winston-Salem, 12-8.  An 8-run inning felled Tyler McKay (6.23) and Mark Potter (12.27).  Tom Sutera (1-2, 8.59) got the win with three scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and a walk.  Manuel Silva (3.18) earned his first save with two scoreless innings allowing two walks.  Jhailyn Ortiz (.260) went 3-5 with a double, 2 HR (18), and 6 RBI.  DJ Stewart (.246) went 2-5 with 2 HR 8) and 4 RBI.  Logan O’Hoppe (.270) went 2-5 with a triple.  Casey Martin (,136) went 2-4.  Cole Stobbe (.140) hit his 3rd HR.  Nate Fassnacht (.217) hit his 5th.

Clearwater (35-36) lost to Tampa, 8-3.  DJ Jefferson made his Low-A debut and pitched 3.2 innings.  He gave up 6 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks.  Sam Jacobsak made his first appearance since coming off rehab and walked one and struck out two in one inning.  Jadiel Sanchez (.302) went 2-5 with a double, HR (3), and 2 RBI.  Abrahan Gutierrez (.285) went 2-4 with a double.  Micah Yonamine (.229) went 2-4 with an RBI.

  1. I’ve been absent from posting on PP because my eyes became very cloudy during Covid. Since cataract procedures were suspended my eyes got worse and worse and worse. I finally have one eye done and the other getting done on Wednesday so I hope to be back to at least reading PP on a near daily basis.

Thought I’d mention some stats. I chose only guys with 100 PAs or more who haven’t played in the major leagues. So a guy like ‘C’ Randolph isn’t included in what I list below.

Top OPS guys (the first one may surprise you): J. Ortiz (.874), D. Brito (.861), A. Gutierrez and B. Stott (both .842).

    Top OBP: Gutierrez (.418), B. Radcliff (.396), V.Friscia (.389), Brito and Stott (both .372).

Top BAs: Brito (.303), Gutierrez (.285), DJ Stewart (.282)

The next few stats are not based on number of PAs just their total number.

HRs: 9 guys with 10 or more. Ortiz (18), Bonifacio (13), Moniak and Cordell (both with 12), Stewart (11), O’Hoppe, Stott, R. Wingrove and L. Miller (all with 10)

    2Bs: C. Martin (20), D. Guthrie (16), Stott and Brito (15), J. Rojas and Bonifacio (both with 14)
    .
3Bs: Brito and Moniak with 5 each.

SBs: H. Markward (17), J Guzman (14), Guzman could have 25 or 30 if his OBP was over .300 but it’s at .234.

Ks: Cordell (87), C. Martin (85) and Ortiz (80). I guess this explains why Cordell was released. At least I think he was released.

    1. Good luck with your surgery, i am waiting to do my eyes, doctor said not yet there but close to having them done,

      1. Good luck. My father is 94+ had it done and still doesn’t wear glasses. Best of results!

    2. Hope all goes well for you Bellman. I’ve been trying to pay close attention to Martin as he was drafted 2nd round as boom or bust potential for his power which of course came with a lot of swing and miss.

The power really hasn’t materialized in HRs but the K rate is sitting near 30%. Not good.

    3. My cataract surgery was delayed, too, because of COVID. Now my eyes are so much better. You’ll be amazed at the difference. Good luck!

    4. Nice to see you back. Thanks for the stats. Wishing you all the best with the surgery.

  2. Pichardo looks to be a guy promoted to CWater on merit rather than just an injury. He hit over 400 in the FCL and went 1-3 in his first A game. He could be someone to follow.
Ortiz certainly looks headed for Reading as he is as hot as they come.
Sanchez continues to impress and to be someone to follow.

    1. Denny…a few months ago Vargas FB 90-92,
but breaking stuff were his out pitches, hovering velo around 84-87
He could have picked up tick or two on his FB since early May aa his arm stretched and strengthened.
Phillies must like his projection…recd $500K to sign in 2017 out of Colombia.

      1. Romus, thank you. Hopefully he gets another shot in AAA and makes the best if it.

  3. Bellman – Welcome back. Missed your insight on the minor leaguers. You were/are always the first to post your comment on the affiliates recap.
