2021 Draft

This is the Phuture Phillies forum for the discussion of prospects eligible for the amateur draft that is scheduled to be held in one month (July 11-13, 2021).  You can place video, scouting reports, or just comments here.  You can reference these weekly discussions on the menu above.

The Phillies have the 13th pick in a first round of 29 selections.  The cheating Astros don’t have a first-round pick.  (Or a second-round pick)  There are 20 rounds plus two supplemental rounds.

The Phillies have a bonus pool allotment of $8,295,000.  Bonus assignments for the Phillies’ picks are –

  1. 13th overall: $4,197,300
  2. 49th overall: $1,507,600
  3. 84th overall: $721,900
  4. 114th overall: $507,400
  5. 145th overall: $375,200
  6. 175th overall: $284,200
  7. 205th overall: $222,100
  8. 235th overall: $177,400
  9. 265th overall: $155,800
  10. 295th overall: $146,100
  11. 325th overall: picks in rounds 11 thru 20 are each capped at $125, 000 which doesn’t count against the bonus pool; any portion exceeding this figure counts against the bonus pool.
  12. 355th overall: capped at $125, 000
  13. 385th overall: capped at $125, 000
  14. 415th overall: capped at $125, 000
  15. 445th overall: capped at $125, 000
  16. 475th overall: capped at $125, 000
  17. 505th overall: capped at $125, 000
  18. 535th overall: capped at $125, 000
  19. 565th overall: capped at $125, 000
  20. 595th overall: capped at $125, 000

Contracts for non-drafted free agents are capped at $20,000.

Feel free to discuss the 2021 international signing period, too.  It began on January 15, 2021, and runs through December 15, 2021.

The Phillies’ international signing pool is $4,732,700.  We were penalized some of our bonus pool for signing Zach Wheeler.  The Angels are receiving the same amount and were penalized for signing Anthony Rendon.  Only the Yankees (Gerrit Cole ) and Braves (Marcell Ozuna plus penalties for the 2017 scandal) are receiving less.

International bonus pools are a hard cap.  Teams cannot exceed their allotments.  No trading of bonus pool allotments this year.

  2. If it falls that way, v1, and they almost never do, I take Wicks or Solomento, Hinkie’s guy, over Benny Montgomery. It’s crazy, one the other day had Bachman, for instance, going 34, today he is 11. Who do you like? You always have a good feel for what makes a good prospect.

  4. I would lean towards pitching for the first round pick. The farm system needs another pitching prospect besides Mick Abel.

  5. Hinkie Looking at Wicks numbers, i don’t follow college like you do, his numbers aren’t great for a cold weather team, that doesn’t imo play top programs i could be wrong,

    1. rocco … Wicks has one plus pitch: his CH. That pitch gets a lot of swings and misses. He looks like a safe (probably) BOR MLB starter. Some teams like that type of higher floor prospect even if he (probably) comes with a lower ceiling. I’d prefer Anthony Solometo, the HS LHP from Bishop Eustace. He comes with much more risk, but much more upside IMO.

      BTW … Kansas St plays in the BIG 12. That’s probably the third best baseball conference in America. Ty Madden (Texas) plays in the same conference.

  6. Olympic Colonial plays 930 am 6/18 so u can see Solomento pitch against decent HS hitters in carpenter cup.

      He’s faced a number of the top ranked teams in NJ (both south and north) this season, and he’s dominated them all.

    2. Patso…hah, the Carpenter Cup…last one I attended was 30 years ago….saw the Bull’s son Ryan Luzinski, big catcher, playing for one of the Jersey teams, smash one over the LF fence at the Vet.

  7. Here’s a draft primer for the 2021 draft from Kiley McDaniel ($).

    He includes this scenario: the 2022 draft class is stronger than the 2021 class. It’s not out of the question that a team(s) may take a flyer on a hard-to-sign kid with a high pick with the thought that the worst case is that they don’t sign the player and get a comp pick next year. So … they would basically trade a first or second round pick in 2021 for that same first or second round pick (actually one slot lower) in 2022.

  9. v1 posted this in the Open Discussion thread, but I’ll re-post it here. Fangraphs put out their first mock draft. They had some info on many clubs’ draft plans, but it appears the Phillies (like last season) have kept their plans close to the vest. According to Eric Longenhagen, “The dope has been pretty dry around Philly, with just a couple sources pointing toward Montgomery, though that may just be due to proximity.” They ended up picking Harry Ford based on no intel.

    Meanwhile, John Clarke has reported the Phillies have interest in Anthony Solometo. As I’ve posted numerous times, I’d be excited to add the HS lefty to the farm.
