Threshers’ and Affiliates’ Recap – 5/14/2021

Back to one win for the affiliates.  Clearwater rallied twice to beat the Mighty Mussels and even their record.  Lehigh Valley lost another tough one to the RailRiders.  Reading scored a handful of runs but still managed to lose by a half-dozen.  And, Jersey Shore rallied in the eighth only to lose in ten.  But, the Phillies beat a Toronto team that swept Atlanta.  And, Vince pitched well.

Clearwater (5-5) beat Fort Myers, 6-3.  The Threshers rallied twice to win and reach .500 for the season.

The Threshers scored first on Carlos De La Cruz’ RBI single in the second inning.  The game was tied on a double steal in the bottom of the inning.  (This is the second or third time the Threshers were burned on this play this season.)  They tied the game in the sixth on a wild pitch.  They tied and pulled ahead in the seventh on RBI singles by Casey Martin and Luis Severino.  (Note: Martin went reached third on his single that included a fielding error in the outfield and throwing error by the third baseman.)  They added 2 insurance runs on an error on a sac bunt by Joan Rojas and a fielding error later in the inning.

Abrahan Gutierrez went 2-3 with a run scored and a double.  Garcia, Baron Radcliff, and De La Cruz had the only RBIs.  Garcia also stole a base.  Threshers’ batters walked 8 times and only struck out four times.  While their pitchers walked just 4 and struck out fifteen.

Lehigh Valley scored 3 early runs.  They scored in the first inning on Mickey Moniak’s RBI single.  They scored 2 runs in the second on a fielding error off the bat of Travis Jankowski.

The three-run lead was quickly squandered in the bottom of the third.  Christopher Sanchez gave up 5 runs on 3 hits, a third-strike wild pitch, and 3 walks.  He only retired 2 batters in the inning and gave way to Damon Jones leaving the bases loaded.  Jones walked in a run before getting the final out.  Ramon Rosso gave up a run in the fifth.

The IronPigs scored a meaningless run in the ninth on a ground out by Austin Listi.

In spite of the ten runs that both teams scored, the offenses were … offensive.

They combined for 18 walks (LHV 8, SWB 10), 27 strikeouts (LHV 13, SWB 14), individual batters stranded 48 base runners (LHV 29, SWB 19), 23 LOB (LHV 13, SWB 10), and 2 for 26 with RISP (LHV 1-17, SWB 1-9).

Reading (2-8) lost to Bowie, 11-5, their 5th consecutive loss.

Five runs, looks like the bats finally woke up.  But, the runs came on 4 hits.  Three of which were HRs that accounted for 4 of the runs.

McCarthy Tatum (2) got things started with a 2-run HR in the second inning.  Nick Matera (2) restored the 2-run lead with a solo HR in the fourth.  Matt Vierling’s (3) solo HR in the fifth restored the Phils’ one-run lead.  Later, when trailing 9-4, Vierling stroked an RBI single in the seventh that scored Matera.

  1. What’s the story with Markwardt? He hasn’t gotten much talk but he was promoted quickly to JS and is actually batting 2nd for them, and hitting well. Is he a prospect? Just looking for upside stuff….

    1. He was drafted in the 13th round in 2019. He’s already 23 (will be 24 in August). To be somewhat age appropriate, he needs to at least get to Reading this season, so we’re rooting for him to continue mashing the ball.

      1. If he keeps hitting like this, he’ll get moved up to Reading but is he a pure singles hitter? Does he have good speed? Good glove?

  2. I really like following this Clearwater team. About the only one we got that is chock full of prospects.

  3. Hunter Markwardt wants to get to Reading quick…..three more hits tonite in Wilmington in the 4th inning.
He may be the hottest hitter in the system right now.
