Threshers’ and Affiliates’ Recap – 5/9/2021

We won just one of four contests on Sunday.  Clearwater’s late rally fell short.  Lehigh Valley won a rain-shortened game.  Reading also rallied and fell short.  Jersey Shore got stomped.

It’s too early to tell, but these 6-game series seem to create some familiarity between the teams.  They are more likely to see all the pitchers twice with a 5-man rotation/piggyback.

Clearwater (3-3) lost to Lakeland, 6-4.

Sometimes you can see a game can turn on a single play.  Sometimes you don’t know which play until later, sometimes much later.  Sunday, Christian Hernandez was dealin’.  He had faced 7batters and struck out 6 of them.  He was pitching at the top of the zone, sometimes above it, and jamming those who managed to get wood on the ball.  That “single play” occurred with the next batter.

Ben Pelletier was in rightfield.  A Lakeland batter clanked a soft fly ball to shallow right.  Ben charged and dove forward awkwardly to save the “no-hitter”, I assume.  He face-planted and the ball skittered away.  The batter reached second and there was a long delay before Ben was escorted off the field under concussion protocol.  (He was fine and later I saw him watching the game from the dugout chatting with staff and teammates.)

Anyway, the delay took Hernandez out of his rhythm and batters started reaching base.  He struck out the last batter he faced but allowed a run and left with the bases loaded.  Nick Lackney was the reliever and promptly gave up a bases-clearing double.

Lackney pitched one more inning and turned the game over to Gunner Mayer.  The young hurler threw 6 consecutive balls that induced a mound visit.  Six consecutive balls aren’t unusual in Low-A, but they were all at 90 or less (77 curve, then 5 fastballs – 90, 89, 90, 90, 90).  That was a concern.  His fastball in his last outing was 91-94 mph.  Mayer was removed from the game and replaced by Fernando Lozano.

The earlier walk resulted in a cheap run without a hit.  The runner stole second and went to third when catcher Chris Burke’s throw sailed into centerfield.  After a popup, Lozano got a comebacker and had the runner caught off third.  Nicolas Torres let the ball clank off his glove, runner scored.  Lozano gave up a not-so-cheap run in the seventh on a leadoff HR.

Carlo Reyes and Tyler Burch each tossed scoreless innings.

  1. Hernandez – 2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K – 45 pitches, 2 four-seam (94 and 95 mph), 24 sinkers (93-95, touched 96), 13 curves (78 mph), 6 changeups (85 mph)
  2. Lackney – 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 WP, 3 inherited runners scored (IRS) – 22 pitches, 8 fastballs (90-92), 10 changeups (78 mph), 4 sliders (81 mph)
  3. Mayer – 0.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
  4. Lozano – 3.0 IP, 2 H,1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K – 34 pitches, 12 fastballs (89-91), 14 curves (79-83), 6 changeups (83-87), 2 sliders (83 mph)
  5. Reyes – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K – 12 pitches, 8 fastballs (90-91), 2 changeups (85 mph), 2 curves (80 mph)
  6. Burch – 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K – 18 pitches, 12 fastballs (94-95), 1 changeup (86mph), 5 sliders (82-85)

On offense, the Threshers had their chances.  They had hits in and put runners on base in every inning but the seventh.  Luis Garcia got them on the board in the bottom of the third on a solo HR to left.  He has had his share of opportunistic base hits, but he just turned on this pitch and it sailed into the bullpens.  DJ Stewart led off with a double in the sixth and scored on Nicoles Torres’ RBI single.

The Threshers closed to within two runs with two runs in the eighth inning.  Luis Garcia walked and Casey Martin singled to start the inning.  A wild pitch moved them up a base.  Garcia came home on Stewart’s ground ball to the first baseman.  Martin scored on Corbin Williams’ single.

In the ninth, Edgar Made walked with one out and Johan Rojas singled, but two fly balls ended the threat.

Garcia went 1-3 with 2 R, RBI, HR, 2 BB.  Martin went 2-5 with a run scored.  Stewart went 2-4 with a R, RBI, Double. Pelletier went 1-1 with a Double.  Torres went 2-4 with a run scored.

I did not mean to minimize Garcia’s hitting with the word opportunistic.  I meant that he takes what the defense gives him.  He’s a shift beater.  I’ve seen him intentionally guide balls through holes in the defense.  He’s a smart ballplayer both in the field and at the plate.  I don’t want to over-hype Garcia.  This is what the Phillies expected when they sent him to Lakewood in 2019.  A strong follow-up season.  He used that experience and the lost pandemic season to come back stronger.  He will likely be the first position player promoted on merit rather than need.

Lehigh Valley (5-1) beat Rochester, 7-1 in 5.5 innings.

Rochester scored a run in the top of the first.  Lehigh Valley answered with 2 in the first on Mickey Moniak’s RBI triple and Austin Listi’s sac fly.  They added 5 in the second on Travis Jankowski’s 2-run single, Ronald Torreyes’ RBI double, a wild pitch, and Moniak’s sac fly.  Then all they had to do was get five innings in before the rain got really hard.

The top of the order provided almost all the firepower.  Jankowski went 1-3 with a R, 2 RBI.  Torreyes went 1-2 with 2 R, RBI, Double.  Moniak went 2-2 with a R, 2 RBI, Triple, SF.

Listi went 0-2 with a sac fly.  Rafael Marchan, Sal Gozzo, and Adonis Medina each went 0-1 with a BB and run scored.  Marchan stole a base.

Adonis Medina pitched 5,0 solid innings allowing one run on 4 hits and a walk.  He struck out six.  Mauricio Llovera went 1.0 inning allowed a hit and struck out a batter.

Reading (2-4) lost to Erie, 7-5.

The Phils took a lead on Colby Fitch’s solo HR in the sixth inning.  They fell behind under the weight of a 7-run eighth by the SeaWolves.  They rallied but fell short with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, but did bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth with nobody out.

Fitch went 2-4 with 2 R, 2 RBI, Triple, HR. Matt Vierling went 1-4 with a R, 2 RBI, HR.  Gamboa, Stokes, and Kroon had base hits.

Julian Garcia was strong posting 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K.  Ethan Lindow posted a 3.2 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K.  He left with the bases loaded and Austin Ross stranded all 3 runners.  However, he blew the save opportunity and gave up 5 runs on 6 hits and a walk.  Mark Potter relieved and allowed 2 inherited runners to score.  He finished 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K.

Jersey Shore( 3-3) lost to Hudson Valley 10-1.

The BlueClaws were never really in this game.  Tyler McKay gave up 4 runs in the second inning and that was it.  He finished 3.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.  The Mike Adams experiment may be coming to a close soon.  He got rocked again in 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB.  He’s sporting a 27.00 ERA in 3 appearances, 2.0 IP.  Aneury Zabala struck out the one batter he faced.  Ben Brown lasted 2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.  Billy Sullivan struck out the only batter he faced.  Dominic Ppkin mopped up with 2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K.

Bryson Stott went 4-1 with a solo HR.  Cole Stobbe had the only other hit and was successful on 1 of 2 stolen base attempts.  Logan O’Hoppe and Chris Cornelius were the only other base runners, reaching on walks.  Thirteen Ks forJersey.  Combined their pitchers struck out 14 Renegades.

    1. Denny….Mickey does have a knack to get triples….27 so far in a little less than 1700 PAs in the minors….JRoll had 37 in 2500 minor league PAs.
So he is barreling the ball close to the walls…probably in most instances the ball reaches the base of the outfield wall splitting the OFers..

  1. Medina’s outing is definitely the highlight of yesterday while Ben Brown and Gunner Mayer’s outings the low point. I hope Mayer is ok

  2. From the start of the MILB season, a millisecond in the baseball season, to now, here are some stats. BA: Luke Williams (.440), Matt Vierling (.381) and Luis Garcia (.375). OBP: Vierling (.500), Abrahan Gutierrez (.500) and Rudy Rott (.500). OPS: Colby Fitch (1.317), Vierling (1.262) and Bryson Stott (1.083). Hits: Williams (11), Garcia (9) and Vierling (8), HR: Vierling, Luke Miller and Stott (tied with 2). RBI: Williams (7), DJ Stewart (6) and Austin Listi (5). Jonathan Guzman has 3 SBs. Stott and Arquimedes Gamboa lead in BBs with 8 and 7 respectively. On the less than positive side, Jhailyn Ortiz and Keaton Greenwalt lead in Ks with 12 and 11 respectively. So that covers the first nanosecond in the MILB season.
