Matt Gelb (The Athletic) offers this distinction between Spring Training and Mini Camp –
So, what does this mean? Well, for one thing, I don’t have to go over to the Complex to “verify” players.
Since the groups aren’t working out together, either the groups are scheduled at different times (which could cause difficulty with rehab scheduling) or ST will be held on the field no longer referred to as Spectrum Field (I think a new sponsor, maybe), Bowa Field, Ashburn Field, and Schmidt Field and MC will be held on Carlton and Roberts Fields. Or something else. We’ll see.
Add Tony Watson! Legit lefty in the pen. Love it. There will be some 40 work to do. More small trades coming to clear spots.
Murray, I didn’t see this comment. I had asked the same thing in the Open Discussion. Didn’t mean to copy you! I think there may be a 2 or 3 for 1 move at the end of ST.
Hale is probably first to go now but they’ll need 3 spots for Joyce, Miller and Watson so 2 more are needed at least. Rondon are Nova are still possibles also. Kintzler’s spot will come from Dominguez going on IL. Whose spots are next? Chatham? Vinnie? Dohy? Sanchez? It’s tough so a small trade would help.
I think Hale and Llovera are the first two to lose their spots if it’s thru DFA.
Losing Llovera would stink, he’s got a very good arm. I think Dohy has to show he can throw strikes and Sanchez is unknown.
Hale has definitely been surpassed by bigger and better arms. Would love to have him at AAA for the inevitable needed depth in a season following a 60 game season. Think we’re going to see well run teams be very careful with pitchers early on and I trust DD and Joe to handle this as intelligently as anyone.
I think Romero just lost his major league spot to Watson so he and Suarez will certainly be depth at AAA to start. I see Hale as a trade or DFA to open up a much needed 40 spot. Joyce, Kintzler, and Watson will all need spots. Plus I wouldn’t be surprised to also see Rondon push his way onto the 26, which would require another 40 spot while sending Coonrod or Brogdon to AAA. Guys like Dohy and Sanchez are at risk. I wouldn’t mind seeing Vinnie traded but I think they need to keep him as the 6th starter after sending Howard to AAA. There will need to be some small 3:1 trades for a prospect not on a 40 list yet. What would Sanchez, Dohy and Llovera get us? Medina, Moniak, and Dohy?
Joyce, Kintzler, and Watson are all on minor league contracts, probably with multiple outs as is the normal case…they do not needed to be added to the 40 until the end of ST…..so Joe has 6 weeks to evaluate everyone and make his final decision
Hale has zero options remaining. He’ll have to be DFA-ed off the roster and clear waivers.
