Threshers Recap – 8/13/2019

First a few random thoughts.

I don’t expect the recent assignment of Charlie Manuel to hitting coach to solve all the Phillies’ problems.  Given time, the hitting guru can help almost any hitter.  During Phantasy Camp, he told us the story of how he won the confidence of a difficult Albert Belle when he was the hitting coach for the Cleveland Indians.  I also watched him transform Dylan Cozens before spring training started a couple years ago.  (And, watched the new hitting/analytics/video program destroy his advances before the season started.)  I fear that his presence in the dugout will lead fans and media to call for further change in the dugout.  He’ll likely become the most interviewed hitting coach in baseball. Clearwater (24-30, 60-60)   lost to Dunedin, 2-0.  Ethan Lindow had a solid debut for Clearwater.  The 20-year-old LHP pitched five innings.  He gave up a first inning run, 4 hits, no walks, and struck out six.  he gave up a lead off double in the first, a ground ball between the third baseman and the bag.  The runner scored on an infield hit off the second baseman’s glove.  He surrendered just two more hits, one another infield hit off the first baseman’s glove.  Continue reading Threshers Recap – 8/12/2019

Clearwater (22-27, 58-57)   beat Dunedin, 3-1.  Andrew Brown (3-6, 6.72) posted a “quality start” going six, one-run innings.  He gave up 3 hits, walked one, and struck out six.  It was his first win since May 9th and best performance since posting similar numbers in a five inning appearance back on June 26th.  Tyler Carr (1.77) went 1.1 scoreless innings.  Zach Warren came in to get the final two outs in the eighth.  After a 90+ minute delay, Michael Gomez (3.27) struck out two in a perfect ninth for his first save. Threshers Recap – 8/6/2019

Clearwater (21-27, 57-57)   beat Dunedin, 5-1.  Jose Taveras was imported from Pennsylvania to provide a start for the Threshers.  Taveras stymied the Blue Jays batters for most of his seven innings.  He relied on command to keep the young Dunedin hitters off balance with his sub-90 stuff.  He scattered six hits, walked a batter, and struck out three.  The only run came on a solo HR with two outs in the seventh.  Austin Ross pitched two scoreless innings for his 4th save. Threshers Recap – 8/5/2019

Just a quick note.  The Phillies fielded five home grown players last night in Arizona – 1B Hoskins, 2B Hernandez, 3B Kingery, LF Haseley, and CF Quinn.  The four from elsewhere were winning pitcher Velasquez, his battery mate Realmuto, SS Segura, and RF Harper.

The GCL Phillies East spun a no hitter using 5 different pitchers – Jonas De La Cruz (2nd rehab appearance), Starlyn Castillo (3rd appearance), Engel Estevez (2nd appearance), Cameron Beauchamp (debut), and Brendan Bell (the veteran making his 8th appearance). They had a 12.1 combined innings among them before this game. Continue reading Threshers Recap – 8/5/2019
