Threshers Recap – 8/9/2019

Box Score Recap

Clearwater (23-28, 59-58)   split a DH with Palm Beach, winning 5-3 and losing 3-0.

Game One:  All 3 Cardinal runs came on solo HRs, all 5 Threshers’ runs scored on bases-clearing triples (Ortiz and Kroon).

James McArthur (6.75) opened with three innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks.  He struck out four.  Gustavo Armas (11.15) pitched two innings and gave up one run on 3 hits.  Keylan Killgore (3.63) pitched two, one-hit, scoreless innings for his ninth save, walking none and striking out two.

The Threshers scored twice in the third inning on Jhailyn Ortiz’ 2-run triple.  They scored three times in the fourth on Matt Kroon’s 3-run triple.

Matt Vierling (.237), Rafael Marchan, and Daniel Brito had 2 hits each.  Vierling and Brito doubled, Muzziotti added a third triple.  Ortiz threw out a runner at home.

Game Two:  Seth McGarry (1-1, 3.60) stepped in and threw five, one-run innings.  He allowed 3 hits, walked one, and struck out four.  Kyle Arjona (5.01) gave up 2 runs in one inning on 2 hits and a walk.  Matt Kroon (.222) went 2-2 with a walk and had half of the Threshers 4 hits.

Lehigh Valley (55-60)  lost to  Lehigh Valley, 9-2.  JoJo Romero (3-3, 7.57) went five innings and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks.  He struck out four.  Connor Brogdon (4.29) pitched a one-walk, scoreless inning, striking out two.  Austin Davis (2.93) struck out four in two scoreless innings.  Edgar Garcia (2.63) gave up 4 runs in 0.2 innings.  Tyler Gilbert (3.38) got the final out.  The IronPigs scored a run in the first on Logan Morrison’d sac fly.  They score another run in the fourth on a ground out.  Nick Williams (.346) had 2 of their 4 hits.

Reading (30-20, 69-48)  lost to Altoona, 1-0.  Spencer Howard (1.93) tossed six, shutout innings.  He allowed the Curve three hits and struck out eight.  Jake Hernandez (1.57) pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one.  Garrett Cleavinger (3-1, 4.50) gave up the deciding run on 2 hits in one inning.  

The Phils collected nine hits, but went 1-9 with RISP.  Luke Williams (.231) and Jose Gomez (.259) had 2 hits each.  Williams and Josh Stephen (.265) had doubles, the Phils only XBH. Spencer Howard (.667/.667/.667/1.334) went 1-2.

Lakewood (19-26, 48-67)  lost to West Virginia, 3-1.  Rafi Gonell (4-2, 4.70) went five innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out four.  Taylor Lehman (1.56) pitched four, one-run innings on two hits.  He struck out three.  The BlueClaws scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.  They had 7 singles and went 0-4 with RISP.  Malvin Matos (.239) had 3 hits, Yerwin Trejo (.256) had 2 hits.

Williamsport (20-34)  lost to West Virginia, 6-5.  The Crosscutters built and blew a 5-0 lead in the seventh.  Erik Miller (1.13) opened and tossed four scoreless innings.  He gave up 3 hits and a walk, and struck out seven.  Jose Conopoima (3.21) went four-plus  innings and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out five.  He left with one run home and a runner on base in the ninth.  Rafael Carvajal (3-3, 3.62) came in and gave up a game tying double, got the first out on a ground out that moved the runner to third, and walked 2 runners intentionally.  He got a double play ground ball, but the batter beat the relay as the winning run scored.

The Cutters scored 3 runs in the fourth inning on Nate Fassnacht’s 2-run double and Jake Holmes’ RBI single.  They opened up a 5-run lead with 2 runs in the seventh on Kendall Simmons’ RBI double and Bryson Stott’s RBI double.  Simmons (.245) had 3 hits.  Stott (.250) had 2 hits.  Nate Fassnacht and Jake Holmes had 2 hits each.

GCL Phillies East (16-16)  no game scheduled.

GCL Phillies West (23-11)  beat the Yankees West, 7-4.  Josh Gessner (1.50) was impressive, striking out 5 in two innings.  He gave up a run on a hit, but started a trend with 3 walks.  Dylan Castaneda (9.00) got two outs and gave up 2 unearned runs on a hit and 3 walks.  Jaylen Smith (3.55) inherited a bases loaded situation and stranded all 3 base runners.  He threw 1.2 innings, allowed no runs, but walked three.  Riley Wilson (1.23) injherited and stranded 2 base runners.  He went 1.2 innings, retired all 5 batters he faced, and struck out two.  Nicoly Pina (4.73) pitched two innings, allowed no runs, one hit, and struck out three.  Fernando Lozano (.208) gave up a run in the ninth inning.

The Phillies collected 14 hits.  They scored a run in the first inning on Edgar Made’s solo HR (2).  They scored 2 runs in the third on Tucker Maxwell’s solo HR (2) and Rixon Wingrove’s RBI double.  They took the lead for good with 2 runs in the fourth on Luis Rojas’ 2-run HR (1).  They added a run in the sixth on Kevin Escalante’s RBI single.  And, tacked on another run in the ninth on Christian Valerio’s RBI double.

  2. Lots of losses but the big news was Howard’s six shutout innings with 8 Ks. Plus he got another hit extending his hitting streak to 2!
    Congrats to Maton on his move to Reading Simmons really looks like a different hitter these last 20 or so games. Keep it up! Stott with 2 more hits also.
    Jo Jo can’t seem to get in a positive flow. He’s just not that good.

  3. Austin List has gone ice cold. In his last 10 games, he’s hitting .118. He also has had 1 BB and 7 Ks. He’s going to have to make some adjustments to AAA pitchers because they seem to have made adjustments to him.

    1. Bellman I only saw him twice, Waiting to see a little more of List, couple times I saw him, and its a small sample, Looks like he has a trouble with breaking balls, But only saw a small sample, Tonight will be another chance to see him

  4. Spencer Howard probably has 4/5 more starts left this season since Reading has a little over 20 games left…LHV has a few more @25…maybe he can get a start or two at the end of Augus/beginning of Sept in LHV.

My 2¢ … If the Phillies had any realistic chance of making the playoffs, I’d say continue to push Spencer Howard hard up the ladder and make him available to help the big league club down the stretch. Unfortunately, this team is lacking so much in so many different areas, Howard isn’t going to make a difference. Therefore, they should just allow him to stay in Reading with most of the club’s other top prospects and make a AA playoff run together. (And I’m a guy that thought SWorks’ son should have started the season in Reading).

        His 88 pitches/59 strikes last night were season highs.

      2. I think he should get a promotion and a taste of LHV before next season….get a few starts there and get comfortable in the surroundings.
        I would think the Phillies, if he continues with conssitency, will get him up in June 2020, unless their staff is raking at the big league level and remains healthy

I see nothing wrong in giving this kid, a couple of big league appearance, Please don’t tell me they have to drop someone off the 40, they could drop 15 and it wouldn’t hurt. If he is not hurting give him some experience, Imo he will have a great chance to join the rotation next season. Without a least another top of the rotation arm. This team is going now where, and the bullpen is a mess.

        2. Howard has had 3 AA starts and is coming off a recent stint on the IL. Don’t see how it makes sense to move him up to AAA where it’s obvious the ball is affecting the pitchers that have moved from AA to AAA this year (JoJo, Jones, Dohy, Leftwich all dominated in AA – not so in AAA). Let Howard shine in AA, add to his prospect status, and help Reading win the championship. It’s a good group there. Howard will get an invite to spring training in 2020 and if he dominates, maybe he becomes part of the rotation. He is still learning to pitch and, IMO, another 4-6 starts at Reading during a playoff environment will serve him better than getting a few starts in AAA.

          2. He will have to go to LHV eventually no matter what.
            If they do not re-engineer the baseballs by next season….he will need to adjust to them in live action, not bullpen sessions, also eventually….might as well start the process later this month.
            Plus….IMO, the Phillies will not start his service time any sooner than they have to Further he has a total of 319 innings pitched, with only 125 @ Cal Poly…..MLB teams like pitchers to get anywhere form 450 to 500 innings pitched in the minors, to include college innings.
            Nola, had close to 420 innings pitched between the minors and LSU, before his promotion and the team was not even in any pressure situations for playoff contention.
            Seriously, they will not rush Howard.

      3. Agreed, let him make a playoff push with Reading and enjoy the playoffs there. No way they lose an option year on him by bring him up before June next year anyway. Start him next year, after spring training with the big club, in LHV and if he’s doing well then bring him up in June

    1. When I saw Jo jo on tv two different times. I Was amazed how he didn’t have a good breaking ball, maybe it was just those two times, but I posted it back when he was first up with LHV, didn’t see anything special in him. So many triple a pitchers in this organization. Just don’t know what they are scouting,

  7. I’ve read very little on this site about Jakob Hernandez. Hinkie calls him Jake ‘the cake’ presumably because of his large size. Is he not considered a prospect? If not, why? When I see his name omitted from this top 30 and no one talking about him it makes me wonder why. He does lack velocity from what I understand but would like to know how he’s perceived by more knowledgeable people on this site than I.

    1. Pen arms like Jake the Cake do not get high consideration in the prospect world unless they project as high leverage arm or closer. Jake doesn’t have the stuff to be a back end starter although he knows how to do his job.

      A reliever who does not have any sort of velo and the command that goes with it, is doomed in the majors.

    3. STUFF – his stuff is good enough to get out mi or league hitters but maybe not big league hitters. It’s really as simple as that. Now, by contrast, Spencer Howard DOES have the stuff to get out big league hitters and maybe even be a top of the rotation arm. He’s hugely important to the entire franchise.

      1. Two other names – Muzziotti and Wingrove. Simon has done really well for a 20 year old at Clearwater and it looks like he’s starting to drive the ball. Wingrove has been an absolute beast and draws a ton of walks too – he might be the next big slugger in system. Can’t wait until he hits full season ball.

    4. First … I would not write JoJo Romero off as just another AAAA pitcher yet.
      Here’s my theory: the different ball being used at AAA (same ball as MLB) is causing Romero major issues. The ball is not only juiced, but (more importantly) the stitching is more flush with the ball. That stitching issue takes some time to get used to. Damon Jones has seen his BB/9 IP go up 100% since arriving in LHV. Even Aaron Nola struggled with the ball to start 2019. Nola’s has BB’d more than a batter per 9 IP in 2019 compared to any of his other MLB seasons.
      The stitching may be even more of an obstacle for JoJo because he (I’m assuming) has smaller hands. JoJo had turned things around in Reading (53 IP, 46 K, 7 BB in his last 10 games there). However, the minute he returned to AAA (and the juiced ball with more flush stitching), his control once again has taken a nose dive (16 IP, 10 K, 9 BB). Can he ever get used to the different ball? Will his smaller hands a;ways be a problem? Will he have to cut back on the type of pitches he throws (he currently has an arsenal of at least 5 [maybe 6] different offerings)? Will MLB go back to the old ball with normal stitching next season? These are all questions that still need to be answered before giving up on JoJo Romero.

      Second … Welcome aboard the Jake Hernandez bandwagon! He’s not on a top 30 list because most people profile him as a LOOGY. The truth of the matter is … the Hefty Lefty actually has a better K% vs RHH’s. I’ve been a believer since the day Johnny Almaraz selected him on day three of the 2017 draft. jaKe the caKe has a strong history of racking up K’s at every level (amateur and professional) he has ever thrown in. To be fair, a lot of people also don’t believe in him because of the lack of velo. However, I feel he “could” get a shot and have some success in MLB because his delivery allows him to compensate the lack of velo by hiding the ball well and not allowing batters to pick it up soon enough. Maybe it’s wishful thinking on my part, but you can’t argue with his success to this point. AA to MLB is a huge leap, but since I’ve been driving the Jake Hernandez train this far, I’m going to ride with it until it derails and crashes.

      1. I too am on the Hernandez bandwagon.. if he continues going the way he has, he’ll make the majors. Whether or not his deceptive delivery and quality breaking pitches translates to an extended career remains to be seen. My guess is he will do well, at the very least as a LOOGY but has a good shot at being a valuable setup guy.

    Another great start from Howard. I don’t want him up this year. Phillies coaches will find a way to ruin him.

    1. Sixto still goes in my scenario. High risk, health wise with questionable work ethic. Howard is mentally strong, more of a MadMax mold. No second guessing here.

      1. How do we know Howard is mentally strong and Sixto is not? Also, Howard is coming off of a shoulder injury and missed like two months. You’d have to have health concerns for both of them.

        I don’t know what the scouting reports on Sixto have been recently but I do know that his AA numbers are excellent.

            Just gauging, vs the experts opinions. I’ve always read that Sixto was a potential ace, and I’m reading Howard night only top out at a #3, possibly a #2. Good news is the rotation needs both, but for me,
            Howard seems at minimum a #2. Sixto would be nice to have still, but there were concerns of his work ethic, his ability to stay a starter, and obviously the health concerns. Will see, either way, Realmuto needs to pick it up and also be resigned, that was a heavy price not to

    3. One guy whom we have almost ignored is Andrick Nava, a 17 year old catcher at GCL West. All I know about him are his stats, but .351/.392/.414/.809 at 17 in the GCL is not shabby. Looking at the box scores, day after day- the kid just hits. He is often used as a DH, but that is because they have a number of catching prospects on the team, all of whom need a chance to catch. Anyone know anything about him? Jim?

      1. $400K signing from Venezuela. Bat is supposed to be ahead of his fielding but I think he is probably the best position player prospect from the 2018 J2 class (assuming Rojas was 2017).

    1. The question of the next three impact players is interesting because it is “next” not eventual, as someone like Rojas, unless he races through.

      It’s hard for me to vote for any player I’ve not seen, so I’ll stick to them and vote: Moniak, Damon Jones, Medina.

      If we’re may pick a longer term project and I go with a player I know only through boxscores and video snippets, I’l pick O’Hoppe.
