Threshers Recap – 6/14/2019

There was an intrasquad game at the Complex in the afternoon.  They schedule one every day.  This one was different because most of the newly signed position players played.  The only two who didn’t were high school draft picks Jamari Baylor and Micah Yonamine.

The most exciting event was Spencer Howard taking the mound.  He retired the side on less than ten pitches, but continued to face batters until he reached his pitch limit.  I watched the radar guns on most of his pitches.  His fastball was 93-95 mph.  They were almost all 95, I only saw 93 and 94 once each.

Clearwater (36-30, .545) finished the first half in second place, 5.5 games out of first.  They played .500 at home and were 19-13 on the road.

This is All Star weekend in the FSL.  The game will be played Saturday in Jupiter.  Seven Threshers were selected for the All Star team – pitchers Damon Jones and Grant Dyer; infielders Alec Bohm and Nick Maton; and outfielders, Simon Muzziotti and Matt Vierling.  Jonathan Hennigan was also selected, but he has since been promoted to Reading.

  • #1 Alec Bohm (.313)
  • #5 Spencer Howard (1-1, 2.25) placed on the 7-day IL on May 5th, shoulder soreness
  • #11 Jhailyn Ortiz (.212)
  • #12 Simon Muzziotti (.277)
  • #17 Kyle Young (1-3, 4.29) placed on the 7-day IL on May 1st, TJ surgery
  • #18 Nick Maton (.275)
  • #19 Rodolfo Duran (.235) went 1-1 as a replacement for Fitch
  • #20 Daniel Brito (.238)

Lehigh Valley (32-32) lost to Columbia, 13-6.

Tyler Viza couldn’t retire a batter.  He faced 6 and they all scored – 5 hits, a walk, and 3 HR.  Seth McGarry came in and gave up 4 more runs (only one ER).  Josh Tols earned pitching honors for the evening, pitching three perfect innings and striking out five.  Luke Leftwich gave up a run, Austin Davis gave up two.

The IronPigs had the same amount of hits as the Clippers, and actually outscored them the rest of the way, 6-4.  Deivy Grullon had their only XBH, a double.  Six guys had 2-hit games – Castillo, Grullon, Hernandez, Brantly, Tomscha, Canelo.

  • #3 Adam Haseley (8-25, .320) promoted to Phillies on June 4th
  • #6 Enyel De Los Santos (2-2, 3.65)
  • #7 JoJo Romero (2-2, 9.64)
  • #10 Ranger Suarez (2-2, 5.68) recalled by Phillies on June 7th
  • #16 Cole Irvin (2-0, 2.08) recalled by Phillies on May 31st
  • #22 Kyle Dohy (1-3,  8.41)
  • #28 Edgar Garcia (1-1, 1.80) promoted to the Phillies on May 6th

Reading (37-27) beat Harrisburg, 3-2.

JoJo Romero tossed seven 3-hit, shutout innings.  He walked one and struck out eight.  Jake Hernandez struck out two in one inning of relief.  Connor Brogdon gave up an unearned run on a fielding error, but he did load the bases before the errant play on a single and 2 walks.  Jeff Singer bailed him out with a strike out of the only batter he faced for his first save.

The Phils scored a run on Austin Bossart’s FBI single.  Their other two runs scored on a force out and a ground outs.  Bossart and Raul Rivas had 2 hits each.

Mickey Moniak picked up his 7th triple.

  • #2 Adonis Medina (5-2, 3.32)
  • #3 Adam Haseley (.268) promoted to Lehigh Valley on May 29th
  • #7 JoJo Romero (1-3, 5.86) – 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
  • #9 Mickey Moniak (.260) went 1-4 with a run scored, triple (7), BB
  • #13 Arquimedes Gamboa (.189) went 1-2 with a sac, BB
  • #15 Mauricio Llovera (2-3, 4.28)
  • #21 David Parkinson (5-3, 3.54)
  • #22 Kyle Dohy (2-0, 0.82) – promoted to Lehigh Valley April 25th
  • #25 Cornelius Randolph (.224) went 1-4 with a run scored
  • #29 Connor Seabold – on the 7-day IL on April 4th

Lakewood (27-41) beat Asheville, 7-5 in 11 innings.

Kevin Gowdy went 4.2 innings (63 pitches/42 strikes, 66.7%).  He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and a walk.  Luis Ramirez got the one out he was tasked to get, but it took two batters.  James McArthur gave up an unearned run in three inning.  Ismael Cabrera gave up an unearned run in two inning.  Luis Carrasco earned his first save.

The BlueClaws entered the ninth inning trailing 4-0.  They started the inning with Luke Miller’s third HR.  Ben Pelletier singled and Malvin Matos walked.  After a pitching change, Hunter Stovall walked to load the bases on 4 pitches.  (It;s good to see other teams do this too.)  Jake Holmes emptied the bases with a 3-run double to tie the game.  With nobody out, the BlueClaws had a major fail when they couldn’t score even though 5 more players batted in the inning.

The Claws scored a run in the tenth on Stovall’s sac fly.  The Tourists tied i the bottom of the inning.  The Claws scored 2 in the eleventh on Guzman’s sac fly and an RBI single by Rafael Marchan.

Jake Holmes went 1-4 with 3 RBI.  Luis Garcia and Luke Miller had 2 hits each.

  • #1 Alec Bohm (.367) – promoted to Clearwater, 4/29/2019

  • #30 Manuel Silva (1-2, 6.23)

Williamsport (0-1) opened its season with a 4-3 loss to State College.

Seven errors. The pitching staff did well to keep the Cutters in the game with 7 errors being committed.  Gustavo Armas lasted three innings.  He was charged with 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk.  Only one of his runs was earned.  He left with two runners on base in the fourth.  Abdullah Aris relieved Armas and struck out the side.  But, not without giving up a double that plated one of the two inherited runners.

Junior Tejada came on in the fifth and gave up the eventual winning run on 2 hits and a walk.  Alejandro Made pitched the final 2.2 scoreless innings.

Nicolas Torres scored all 3 runs.  He scored in the first on D.J. Stewart’s sacrifice fly.  He scored in the third on Logan Simmons’ RBI double.  And, he scored in the fifth on an RBI single by Julio Francisco.

Torres went 1-3 with 2 walks and stole a base.  Julio Francisco went 2-5.  Simmons went 1-2 with a walk. Stewart went 2-4.

  1. Good outing by JoJo…..maybe , just maybe he turned the corner for this season.
Many still consider him a top ten Phillies prospect and he showed signs of that last night.

      1. Dude, 90% of your posts (and you post a lot) on here are whether someone could be a trade chip. I feel like maybe there is a better blog out there for you than one that focuses on minor league development.

  2. The 2 DSL Teams are a combined 17-6. That’s impressive. When I go to the stats, their success appears to be from the pitching side. The Red and White teams are pretty stingy giving up runs. They are near the top in most pitching stats. Manual Urias and Puello are 18 yo’s who continue to impress. A 19 yo, in his 1st professional season, Victor Lopez has also been a bright spot for the White team. It might be a case of an older guy beating up on mostly younger guys or maybe he’s the next Ramon Rosso. 6 IP means very little but that’s what you get for early season stats.

The hitting side is a lot less rosy. Both teams are close to the bottom in most hitting stats. The HRs have picked up in the last week. A 17 yo named Alexeis Azuage, on the Red squad) is showing some power (2 HRs) and he’s 3rd on the teams in BA and 2nd in OPS. He could be a fun guy to keep an eye on.

The 7 Es by Williamsport is scary but we all know that guys coming out of college are suddenly playing on very different infields and outfields. It takes some time to get in the grove. But wait, the Es were by guys who played professionally last year. 3 were fielding, 2 on throws, 1 was a missed catch and 1 was a catcher interference. Maybe just 1st game jitters. Let’s hope.

    1. Alexeis Azuaje. …isn’t very imposing at just 5’10, 160 pounds, but what he lacks in size he makes up for in speed. He runs at 60-yard dash at 6.41 seconds.

From a scouting report from June 2018 after signing wit the Phillies:
:His speed translates well to the field as he made some nice defensive plays during practice and in-game, highlighted by a diving catch to his right side on a line drive. His arm looks strong enough to be able to stick at the position. Philadelphia values shortstop prospects who can stick at the position highly internationally as they have a higher floor if their hitting doesn’t come together. Azuaje did struggle hitting during the showcase games, going 1-for-7 with four strikeouts. The righty hit plenty of line drives during batting practice, but as of now his bat trails his glove.”

  4. DSL White prospect RHP Fernando Ortega….ranked as 32nd best international player last year by BA’s Ben Badler, and 7th rated pitcher of the international signing class.
Good height at 6’4″, and may fill out.

Other DSL player..Red team… rated 42nd, LHP Joalbert Angulo from the Ven.
Another tall lefty who will need some added weight gain.

  5. Josh Tols strikes me as an RJ Swindle type who would have a tough time in the majors, but you gotta give him credit. He allowed an insanely low 13 hits in 33 IP for Reading last year and has pretty much continued that for LHV: 5 hits in 11 IP so far.

That’s the Jojo Romero focused game recap from last night. Here’s what I gleaned from it: 1) Something clicked in his delivery 2) He’s still throwing 5 different pitches 3) He gave credit to his connection with Bossart 4) Moniak made a catch at the wall that may have saved a HR.

It’s interesting that Logan Simmons played 2B and Torres played SS for Williamsport.

    1. Pat Borders said last night Simmons is going to play second, third and short at times this summer, and I’d assume we’ll see Torres at second as well. I think there’s a thought process of trying to make these guys as versatile as possible.

      1. This is happening thru-out the system…flexibility and versatility…..especially for muddle infielders (palying 2nd , ss and3rd) and the three OF positions for all OFers..
I suppose preparing the infielders for the MLB’s many defensive shifting alignments.

  7. DJ Stewart has some great range. He had an unassisted put out at second base playing 3rd.
