Rafael Marchan was your selection as the #13 prospect in the Phillies’ organization.
Marchan received 41 of the 187 votes cast (21.93%). Ranger Suarez received 37 votes (19.79%), Dylan Cozens received 15 votes (8.02%), and Austin Listi, Kevin Gowdy, and Simon Muzziotti received 13 votes each (6.95%). Twenty-one guys shared the remaining 55 votes.
The Phillies signed Rafel Marchan as an international free agent out of Venezuela on July 3, 2015. He signed a future services contract and didn’t begin his professional career until the 2016 season in the Dominican Summer League.
Marchan impressed in the DSL in 2016 with a .333/.380/.386/.766 slash. In a run happy league, he threw out 16 of 40 base stealers (40%).
Marchan played in the GCL in 2017 and slipped to a .238.,290/.298/.588 slash. He threw out 16 of 37 base stealers (43.2%). I recall that he started the season opener at the Yankees in Tampa. He was spiked on the wrist applying a tag at the plate after retrieving a wild pitch. He was taken to the hospital by a trainer and missed a couple weeks.
Marchan’s bat returned to his DSL form in 2018 with Williamsport. He posted a better slash of .301/.343/.362/.705 and threw out 20 of 68 base stealers (29.4%).
Marchan doesn’t have much power as we can see by his .359 career SLG. And, his 31 walks in 495 plate appearances give him a modest .347 career OBP and 6.3 BB%. But, he makes contact and has just 40 career strike outs (8.1%).
Lakewood should be his 2019 assignment with an outside shot at Clearwater..
