Minor League Discussion: Week of December 31, 2018

Happy New Year!

Early next month, the Phillies will host nine players to their prospect seminar in Philadelphia.

Players will begin reporting to the Complex in Clearwater by the middle of the month.  Some will take part in a job program with the city of Clearwater that allows them enough  time to work out at the Complex.  Others will begin reporting on their own dime.

Where players go, coaches follow.  I should get a look at the new hitting instructors.  maybe Jason Ochart will make an appearance.

No more non-roster invites to announce.  The Phillies usually invite over 60 players to spring training.  Expect more to be made public in January.

By my count, the organization includes 352 players.

This is the Phuture Phillies Discussion Page for Prospect and Minor League discourse. No Phillies talk here.

Key Dates:

  • TBA (last year on February 27th) – Minor League Spring Training begins
  • TBA (last year on March 13th) – Minor League Spring Training games begin

The rosters and lists are up to date.

    1. Happy New Year to all. Great site and great comments. I enjoy the banter.

Want everyone to know that Dylan Cozens is doing well in Arizona. He is no longer with his girlfriend and has been 100% on his training and hitting. Working on bat control, staying with non fast ball pitches and hitting lefties. If best, will go to LHV and prove he is ready for the Show. Expecting big year and then career.

  1. Much has been made (with good reason) of the Phillies’ pitching depth throughout their organization. Their depth of catching prospects should not be overlooked: Jorge Alfaro, Andrew Knapp, Deivi Grullon, Edgar Cabral, Rodolpho Duran, Rafael Marchan, Abrahan Gutierrez, Logan O’Hoppe, Bruce Wang, and Juan Aparicio.
Mitch Edwards is a guy who has been overlooked (at least by me) http://tbldaily.com/1883-2/

    1. Yes…he could be a real find…read were his father has helped quite a bit being a former minor leaguer, so he has prepared him well to adapt to minor league ball.
Like to see the Phillies send him to short ball in Williamsport this season, he has already played over two seasons in the AuBL and against players a lot older than him. So he may be ready for the next step up…even at 19 years old.

      1. Bryan … I apologize for missing your nephew (IIRC). I have mad respect for Austin Bossart. Any kid with an Ivy League education who signs for peanuts to chase his dream has got a lot of love for the sport. No matter what happens with his playing career, I believe Austin has a great chance to become a successful coach or executive one day. Best of luck to him.

  2. I think the same thing, that the catching depth throughout the entire system is excellent. Great article and video of Mitch Edwards. I really didn’t have any knowledge on him until you posted this, so thanks! Some outstanding prospects at the lower levels to dream on!

  3. Catcher is such a difficult and important position. I think it requires a team leader due to impact on the pitching staff and really is an ego management position as much as any coach.

I think Catcher is the position most difficult to measure with just stats. Pitchers are so expensive that a catcher who works well with pitchers trumps nearly any hitting or defensive stat.

Hopefully the prospects develop into quality major leagurers. Watching quality catchers is entertaining for hard core baseball fans.
