Around the System–Outfielders

Second time around…

Lehigh Valley

Dylan Cozens, 23, Phils 2nd round pick in 2012; .252/.313/.500 in 218AB; 14HR 46RBI;3SB; 8%BB/33%K; .215 vs LHP; .273 vs RHP; .292 last 30 days; 43 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist; Cozens has really taken it up a notch since the first report, hitting both for average and power over the last month.

Cameron Perkins, 26, Phils 6th round pick in 2012; .308/.408/.478; 5HR 18RBI; 1SB; 13%BB/15%K; .308 vs LHP; .308 vs RHP; .368 last 30 days; 43 games in the OF with 3 errors (.967); 3 OF assists; 3 games at 1B without an error; I believe Perkins has the ability to be a capable 4th or 5th OF in the majors, however, it seems as if his value may come to another organization.  Perkins does a very good job consistently with the glove and stick.  He is making the most of his opportunity to play.

Roman Quinn, 24, Phils 2nd round pick in 2011; .274/.344/.489 in 175AB; 2HR 13RBI; 10SB; 9%BB/25%K; .268 vs LHP; .277 vs RHP; Quinn last played two weeks ago after suffering an elbow injury sliding into 3B, and was placed on the DL over the weekend.  Like most years, it seems as if Quinn is likely to be heading for a significant DL stint with a trip to Dr. James Andrews planned over the next few days.

Nick WIlliams, 23, Acquired from Texas in 2014; .282/.316/.523 in 220AB; 13HR 39RBI; 5SB; 4%BB/31%K; .243 vs LHP; .300 vs RHP; .303 last 30 days; 51 games in the OF with 3 errors (.975); 4 OF assists; Williams has begun putting up the numbers that he is capable of after having an excellent last 6 weeks.  He has already surpassed his 2016 HR total and has become a constant threat in the Lehigh Valley lineup.  With another 30-60 days of similar production, I expect to see him in Philly.

Reading

Osmel Aguila, 27, Signed as a free agent in 2015; .244/.330/.439 in 82AB; 3HR 13RBI; 12%BB/16%K; .255 vs LHP; .229 vs RHP; .250 last 30 days; 8 games in the OF with 1 assist and 1 error.  Aguila joined the FIghtins in May from Extended Spring Training and has been adequate at best.

Zach Coppola, 23, Phils 13th round pick in 2015; .335/.408/.390 in 182AB between Clearwater and Reading; 1HR 14RBI; 12/19SB; 11%BB/14%K; Hitting .227 for Reading in 7 games since his callup; 49 games in the OF with 1 error (.992); 7 OF assists;  Coppola was tearing up High A and was recently promoted to Reading; He is an offensive catalyst who always seems to be on base.  For long term success, his SB rate will need to improve. Excellent in the field.

Andrew Pullin, 23, Phils 5th round pick in 2012; .304/.370/.557 in 230AB; 12HR 39RBI; 0SB; 8%BB/16%K; .253 vs LHP; .341 vs LHP; .292 last 30 days; 44 games in the OF with 1 error and 1 OF assist; Pullin’s bat is ready for AAA; His fielding needs some additional work.  The offensive production has been excellent.

Carlos Tocci, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .285/.352/.357 in 207AB; 0HR 21RBI; 1/5SB; 7%BB/16%K; .281 vs LHP; .288 vs RHP; .240 last 30 days; 54 games in the OF with 1 error; 3 OF assists; Tocci has transitioned nicely to AA continuing to hit well for average and play excellent defense.  His total lack of power inhibits him.

Jiandido Tromp, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .270/.317/.454 in 174AB between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 5HR 22RBI; 1/5SB; .377 vs LHP; .182 vs RHP; .290 last 30 days; 6%BB/26%K; 45 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist; Tromp has earned himself fairly regular playing time in the Reading OF with solid production.

Clearwater

Mark Laird, 24, Phils 9th round pick in 2015; .263/.317/.323 in 167AB; 1HR 10RBI; 7SB; 7%BB.16%K; .333 vs LHP; .242 vs RHP; .275 last 30 days; 40 games in the OF without an error; 0 OF assists; I expected Laird to break out this season.  I was wrong thus far.

Jose Pujols, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2012; .183/.219/.263 in 175AB; 3HR 13RBI; 0SB; 4%BB/46%K; .137 vs LHP; .202 vs RHP; .200 last 30 days; 39 games in the OF without an error; 3 OF assists; Simply abysmal thus far.

Cornelius Randolph, 20, Phils 1st round pick in 2015; .230/.308/.370 in 200AB; 6HR 28RBI; 0SB;  .234 vs LHP; .228 vs RHP; .291 last 30 days; 10%BB/26%K; 46 games in the OF without an error; 3 OF assists; A slow start for Randolph who has picked it up over the last month.

Herlis Rodriguez, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .260/.346/.450 in 169 AB; 7HR 22RBI; 7SB; 10%BB/20%K; .200 vs LHP; .282 vs RHP; .222 last 30 days; Rodriguez has plenty of tools.  They come out less often than they should.

Cord Sandberg, 22, Phils 3rd round pick in 2013; .274/.319/.419 in 215AB between Lakewood and Clearwater; 3HR 26RBI; 3SB; 6%BB/27%K; Hitting ,353 in 5 games with CLearwater since his promotion.  49 games in the OF with 1 error; 6 OF assists.  After spending all of 2016 in Clearwater, Sandberg was demoted to start ’17 and sent to Lakewood.  His production was good enough to get him back to Florida but far from outstanding.

Lakewood

Carlos Duran, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .219/.296/.295 in 146AB; 0HR 9RBI; 3/9SB; 10%BB/22%K; .214 vs LHP; .222 vs RHP; .258 last 30 days; 42 games in the OF with 5 errors; 3 OF assists; It has been a largely unproductive first two months for Duran.

Emmanuel Garcia, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2012; Hitting .261 in 6 games for Lakewood

David Martinelli, 22, Phils 6th round pick in 2016; .208/.267/.384 in 125AB; 4HR 18RBI; 1SB; .143 vs LHP; .221 vs RHP; .317 last 30 days; 7%BB/26%K;  After an awful April, Martinelli has responded well over the last month.  Still plenty of work to do.

Mickey Moniak, 19, Phils 1st round pick in 2016; .266/.325/.397 in 214AB; 2HR 25RBI; 5/9SB; 7%BB/21%K; .194 vs LHP; .296 vs RHP; .250 last 30 days; 54 games in the OF with 2 errors; 4 OF assists; The overall numbers look pretty much the way I expected.  Considerable work is needed against left handed pitching.  Looking for a strong second half of the season.

  1. I think left handed HS Hitters are always going to struggle against left handed pitchers. In HS I’m guessing they just don’t see enough of them until they get to pro ball.

  2. I have been watching Moniak’s splits recently too. He is absolutely crushing RHP, but struggling mightily against LHP. Since it is his age 18 season, and he is noted for having a great work ethic, I am not concerned. But definitely something that he needs to improve.

  3. Gregg, thanks for the little distraction from the Draft. I’m sick of reading about not taking a 1B because it’s a position of strength in the org or 10 other reasons not to take this guy or that guy. Once the drafting begins, then we’ll get some discussions on good or bad.
