Earlier today, the Phillies announced the 2017 managerial assignments for the organization’s stateside affiliates.
Dusty Wathan will take over Lehigh Valley. Greg Legg will take over Wathan’s spot in Reading. Shawn Williams will move into Legg’s Clearwater position. Marty Malloy was hired to manage Lakewood. The former infielder most recently managed in the Houston system from 2014-15.
Pat Borders returns to manage Williamsport, and Roly de Armas will contunue with the GCL Phillies. Manny Amador will manage one of the DSL teams.
The Phillies also announced a host of other assignments.
Two new Special Assistants to the GM have been added. Bryan Minniti was hired from the Diamondback organization. Jorge Velandia was promoted to Special Assistant, Player Personnel. Both positions report directly to Matt Klentak. Geoff Miller was hired as Mental Skill Coach, and Natan Weinberger was hired as Analyst, Baseball R&D.
International Operations were expanded. Greg McMullin was hired as Coordibnator of International Scouting, and Rafael Alvarez was hired as an International Scout. Both will work for Sal Agostinelli (International Scouting Director). Ray Robles has been promoted to Assistant Director, International Operations, and Elvis Fernandez has been promoted to Manager, Dominican Academy Operations. Orlando Munoz was hired as a DSL Manager. Additional , DSL assignments were Jose Betancourt as Athletic Director, and former Phillies’ farmhands Feliberto Sanchez (last assignment Williamsport) as Assistant Pitching Coach, and Samuel Hiciano (Clearwater) as Hitting Coach.
Four new scouts were added to the Amateur Scouting staff. Greg Schiltz (formerly with the Pirates) was named National Scouting Coordinator. Will Brunson (South Texas), Justin Morganstern (Great Lakes), and Justin Munson (Central Plains) have been added as Area Scouts on Johnny Alvarez’ staff.
In addition to the managers listed above, the following promotions and new hires were added to Joe Jordan’s Player Development Staff. Promotions: Frank Cacciatore, Assistant Hitting Coordinator; Michael Hefta, Clearwater Athletic Trainer; Mickey Kozack, Reading Athletic Trainer; John Mizerock, Reading Coach. New Hires: former Phillies’ infielder Charlie Hayes, GCL Coach; Tyler Henson, Williamsport Coach; Jose Salas, GCL Strength and Conditioning Coach.
One observation. Klentak is still the only Vice President, of the nine in the Phillies’ front office, who is not listed as an Executive.
