Lehigh Valley Report

Lehigh Valley completes the first leg of a two city eight game road trip with their finale against CHarlotte today, having won two of their first three games.  Following todays game, it is onward to Gwinnett for a four game series.  After starting the season 15-17, Lehigh Valley is 14-9 since May 12th and 29-26 on the year.  The ‘Pigs are currently in 4th place of the Northern DIvision of the International League, 1.5 games behind division leading Buffalo.

News and Notes: C Logan Moore had two starts this week, one where he had four hits and the second where he had three hits including his first homer of the year.

–Over his last 17 games, OF Cedric Hunter is hitting .329 with 3HR and 13RBI.  He currently has a six game winning streak.

–Over his last 9 games, 1B Darin Ruf is hitting .371 qith 3HR and 10RBI.

–RP Luis Garcia has been pitching very well as of late, and is unscored upon in 9 of his last 11 games, with 3 wins, a 1.38ERA and 14 K’s in 13IP during that time period.

–RP Edubray Ramos is now unscored upon in all 10 games since he joined Lehigh Valley, spanning 14.2IP.  He earned his first AAA save this week.

–In his last 3 starts, David Buchanan has given up a total of 15ER in 18IP (7.50ERA)

–Since JP Crawford joined the ‘Pigs, OF Nick WIlliams is hitting .346.

James Russell has allowed just one earned run in the 21 innings he has pitched as a starter.

–Taylor Featherston is really struggling, hitting just .136 over his last 11 games.

‘Pigs Prospects: Ben Lively was called up to Lehigh Valley two weeks ago, sporting an ERA under 2 for Reading.  He has pitched well in his 2 starts, going seven innings in his first start and six innings in his second start for Lehigh Valley, earning a “quality start” in each and a win in his least start. When he was promoted, he led the Eastern League in strikeouts and WHIP and was second in wins.

Andrew Knapp is at .258/.331/.444 in 167 plate appearances thus far this season.  He has hit 6HR, has 22RBI and is hitting a very impressive .414 with RISP.  Very even splits with a .259 average vs. LHP and .258 vs RHP.  Knapp is hitting .275 over the last 30 days.  His defense continues to be a struggle.  In 40 games behind the plate this year, he has 7 passed balls and 5 errors and has thrown out 29% of would be base stealers.

Jake Thompson is 3-5 with a 4.23 ERA in 10 starts entering todays contest against CHarlotte.  There have been glimpses of potential brilliance but Thompson has by and large struggled this year, with the home run ball really hurting him. The opposition is hitting .254 against him, and Thompson has a 3.1BB/7.8 K rate per 9.  His 8 homers allowed are among league leaders. His last outing on 5/31 was a poor one, having allowed 8R (6ER) in 3.2 innings of work.

  1. Jake the Snake! A few more outings close to what he did today and we’ll see him up here soon.

    1. not close to being cute…we have already had Jake the Snake Diekman, and for me that nickname fit.

  2. Biggest surprise—Moore! The “non-hitter” with 7 hits over a couple of games. Hunh? It is time for Thompson to “take the bull by the horns” and become more reliable and consistent. Don’t know if he has been working on a new pitch (?)…or just has not had decent command. Supposedly he has a sinking FB; so why all the HRs? Can we expect Crawford, Alfaro and Williams to go to the AFL possibly along with Thompson? An outside possibility for Kingery to go there…to meet his future fellow keystone combo….??..

Looking for Thursday and our first two draft picks…then to Int’l signings…Busy.

    1. Four of Thompson’s last five starts have been decent….the Tides starts on Tuesday was a disaster, but he rebounded today.

  3. Is Nick WIlliams really close to being ready for the bigs???

On a side note CARL CRAWFORD IS DFAd with his $20 million contract…. Pay ATTENTION Phillies management, it can be done!!

    1. Wayne- I think steve was Saying that Philly could DFA Howard. Not that Philly should try and get Crawford of the Carl variety.

      1. I don’t think management will DFA Howard this year, not with his history for the team. They won’t do that. Williams or others could replace Borjous or a trade made to accommodate a prospect.

  4. Eshelman gave up 2 hits, than struck out the side and came out of the game after one inning. Injury? Anyone have a handle on it?

  5. For some reason, once Logan Moore is inserted in the line up in the International League, he hits like an all-star.
