Around the System–Middle Infield

Second look at the system’s middle infielders.  Have at it!

Lehigh Valley

Tyler Henson, 27, Re-signed as a free agent in 2015; .240/.280/.301 in 196 AB’s; 0HR 26RBI; 14SB; 5%BB/23%K rates; .214 vs LHP, .254 vs RHP; .185 in June; .340 with RISP; 30 games at 2B with 10 errors (.942); 5.43 R/F; 18 games in the OF without an error.  After a very good 2014 in Lehigh Valley, Henson has been very average this season, albeit while hitting consistently with RISP.

CHase D’Arnaud, 28, Signed as a free agent in 2015; .272/.308/.324 in 213 AB’s; 1HR 13RBI; 10/15SB; 3%BB/12%K rates; .260 vs LHP; .279 vs RHP; .235 last 30 days; .209 with RISP; 43 games at SS with 12 errors (.944); 4.67 R/F; 8 games at 3B with 1 error; 2 games in the OF without an error.  D’Arnaud has been slightly better than medicore for the ‘Pigs.

Edgar Duran, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2007; .161/.232/.207 in 87AB’s; 0HR 5RBI; 6%BB/12%K rates; .126 vs. LHP; .182 vs RHP; 30 games at SS with 6 errors (.959); 4.73 R/F.  Duran missed a good portion of the early going with hamstring issues.  WHen he has played he continues to be a good fielder with no bat.

Reading

Brodie Greene, 27, Signed as a free agent in 2015; .285/.359/.335 in 200 AB’s between Clearwater and Reading; 0HR 12RBI; 3SB; 10%BB/11%K rate;  For Reading: .273/.354/.335 in 161AB’s; .268 vs LHP; .275 vs RHP; .207 last 30 days; .233 with RISP; 48 games at 2B with 4 errors (.976).  Greene has provided the experienced consistency needed once Carlos Alonso was lost for the season due to injury

KC Serna, 25, Re-signed as a free agent in 2015; .270/.330/.324 in 204 AB’s; 1HR 20RBI; 5SB; 8%BB/10%K rates; .283 vs. LHP; .265 vs RHP; .271 last 30 days; .258 with RISP; 43 games at SS with 5 errors (.976); 7 games at 2B without an error; 5 games at 3B with 1 error; 2 games in the OF without an error.  Serna, in his second year with the organization has played very well at multiple positions.

JP Crawford, 20, Phils 1st round pick in 2013; .339/.440/.432 in 183 AB’s between Clearwater and Reading; 2HR 17RBI; 7SB; 15%BB/9%K rates; For Reading: .298/.402/.423 in 104AB’s; ; 15%bb/8%k rates; .188 vs LHP; .347 vs RHP; .306 in June; 44 games at SS with 11 errors (.956); 5.30 R/F.  Crawford missed all of April but has certainly made up for lost time, quickly advancing to Reading and consistently performing as one of, if not, the top player on the Reading roster.  His walk/K rate tells a huge story about Crawford.  He gets on base, makes things happen, is solid defensively and a leader.

Note: Carlos Alonso is on the DL and out for the year

Clearwater

Malquin Canelo, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .311/.363/.474 in 276 AB’s (primarily with Lakewood); 6HR 25RBI; 10SB;7%BB/13%K rates; .326 vs LHP; .303 vs RHP; .230 with RISP; .346 in June; 64 games at SS with 15 errors (.960); 4.48 R/F.  Canelo is rising very quickly up the prospect charts; He has been outstanding with the stick this year, showing pop and speed as well.  He has a good glove with a few more errors than I would like to see this year

Drew Stankiewicz, 22, Phils 11th round pick in 2014; .271/.335/.335 in 170AB’s; 0HR 20RBI; 4SB; 9%BB/13%K rates; 37 games at 2B with 2 errors (.989); 4 games at SS with 2 errors.  Stankiewicz has been solid all year.

Angelo Mora, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .294/.317/.373 in 177AB’s; 0HR 14RBI; 2/5SB; 3%BB/13%K rates; .281 vs. LHP; .261 vs RHP; .264 last 30 days; .347 with RISP; 29 games at SS with 9 errors (.929); 19 games at 2B with 2 errors (.978).  Mora has been a nice surprise seeing fairly regular playing time this year.  He should continue seeing semi-regular time at the position he is more comfortable (2B) with the addition of Canelo into the mix to play SS.

Devin Lohman, 26, Acquired from Reds in 2015; .227/.317/.273 in 110AB’s between Reading and CLearwater; 0HR 9RBI; 3SB; 9%BB/17%K rates; .182 vs LHP; .273 vs RHP; .381 with RISP; 17 games at SS with 3 errors (.959); 5 games at 3B with 3 errors; 6 games at 1B with 1 error; Lohman is an organizational guy who has been serviceable in the merry-go-round infield.

Lakewood

Emmanuel Marrero, 22, Phils 7th round pick in 2014; .226/.250/.258 in 31AB’s between CLearwater and Lakewood; 0HR 3RBI.  Way to early to judge.

Scott Kingery, 21, Phils 2nd round pick in 2015.  2-5 with 2RS in his first Lakewood start

Note: Tim Zier is out for the year injured

Williamsport

Dylan Bosheers, 23, Phils 15th round pick in 2015;    Hitting .111 in 18AB’s thus far, Has played 4 games at 2B without an error and 1 game at SS with 1 error.

William Cuicas, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2011; Is 0-10 on the year and has played 3 games at 2B, committing 2 errors.

Grenny Cumana, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2012; .197/.236/.224 in 223 AB’s between Lakewood and Williamsport; 0HR 13RBI; 12SB; 5%BB/11%K rates; .155 vs. LHP; .233 vs RHP; 52 games at 2B with 14 errors (.939); 7 games at SS with 2 errors (.929). Admittedly, I have never seen Cumana play, however the Phils must see something as he was playing regularly at Lakewood as a 19 year old prior to the NYPL season starting.  The numbers havent been good.

GCL

Jose Antequera, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2013

Jonathan Arauz, 16, Signed as a free agent in 2014

Arquimedes Gamboa, 17, Signed as a free agent in 2014

Lucas Williams, 18, Phils 3rd round pick in 2015

  1. At least none of the Phillies young middle infield prospects are being blocked at the higher levels in the organization
