Around the System–Corner INF

The moves to me at this stage are obvious.  Stassi to Lehigh Valley, Charles playing regularly in Reading and Hoskins to Clearwater.  See the evidence below.

Lehigh Valley

Chris McGuiness, 27, SIgned as a free agent in 2015; .226/.342/.296 in 159 AB’s; 1HR 16RBI; 16%BB/15%K rates; .263 vs LHP; .215 vs RHP; .200 last 30 days; .205 with RISP; 38 games at 1B with 2 errors (.994); 8.18 R/F.  Has been consistently unproductive all year.

Russ Canzler, 29, Re-Signed as a free agent in 2015; .260/.319/.383 in 196AB’s; 4HR 20RBI; 8%BB/18%K rates; .276 vs LHP; .254 vs. RHP; .211 over last 30 days; .245 with RISP; 28 games at 1B with 2 errors (.992); 5 games at 3B without an error; 6 games in the OF with 1 error.  After a fast start, Canzler has been almost non-existent for over a month now.

Cord Phelps, 28, Signed as a free agent in 2015; .220/.298/.269 in 182 AB’s; 2HR 9RBI; 2SB; 10%BB/15%K rates; .224 vs. LHP; .218 vs. RHP; .267 over last month; .250 with RISP; 27 games at 3B with 3 errors (.952); 22 games at 2B with 2 errors (.981).  Has provided little to no offense while continuing his versatility in the field

Reading

Art Charles, 24, Acquired from Toronto in 2013; .274/.355/.514 in 146 AB’s; 6HR 27RBI; 12%BB/24%K rates; .304 vs LHP; .268 vs RHP; .177 over last 30 days; .283 with RISP; 18 games at 1B with 2 errors (.988); 9.22 R/F. After an unbelievable start, Charles has come back to Earth, hard over the last month.  That said, he is playing sparingly and I would like him to receive more regular time.

Brock Stassi, 25, Phils 33rd round pick in 2011; .333/.395/.498 in 207AB’s; 7HR 48RBI; 3SB; 10%BB/12%K rates; .388 with RISP; .339 over last 30 days; 48 games at 1B with 3 errors (.992); 8.19 R/F; 2 games in the OF without an error.  Stassi has been consistently outstanding all year.  I am far from convinced of any major league credentials, however, he should be in Lehigh Valley.  With an organizational guy above him who is hitting .226 with 1HR, there is no reason Stassi should be in Reading after 600 plus AB’s at this level.  Move Stassi and let Charles play.

Gustavo Pierre, 23, Acquired from Toronto in 2014; .235/.266/.343 in 166AB’s; 3HR 16RBI; 3SB; 3%BB/20%K rates; .270 vs. LHP; .224 vs RHP; .214 over last 30 days; .151 with RISP; 44 games at 3B with 10 errors (.918).  Pierre appears to be nothing more than a stop gap AA 3B.

Clearwater

Willians Astudillo, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2008; .305/.333/.390 in 177AB’s; 1HR 18RBI; 2%BB/4%K rates; .301 vs. LHP; .308 vs RHP; .298 with RISP; 24 games at 1B without an error; 8.54 R/F; Has also played 4 games at C, 2 games at 3B and 1 game in the OF.  Astudillo continues to be a man without a home defensively and his lack of power can’t support a corner infield position.  His playing time has been diminishing as of late.

Mitch Walding, 22, Phils 5th round pick in 2011; .236/.296/.303 in 195 AB’s; 2HR 15RBI; 2/5 SB; 8%BB/26%K rates; .246 vs. LHP; .230 vs RHP; .278 over last 30 days; .241 with RISP; 55 games at 3B with 8 errors (.953).  Walding continues with a very high strikeout rate and shows little consistent power.  Improving over the last month but has not shown real consistency.

Zach Green, 21, Phils 3rd round pick in 2012; Hitting .173/.216/.221 in 104 AB’s prior to being placed on the DL with a broken wrist 5 weeks ago.

Lakewood

Rhys Hoskins, 22, Phils 5th round pick in 2014; .330/.408/.549 in 224 AB’s; 9HR 46RBI; 2/6SB; 9%BB/19%K rates; .258 vs. LHP; .361 vs RHP; .358 over last 30 days; .370 with RISP; 55 games at 1B with 4 errors (.993); 9.73 R/F.  You simply cant ask for anything more than what Hoskins has given both with the bat and glove.  He should be in CLearwater.

Derek Campbell, 23, Phils 20th round pick in 2014; .195/.246/.283 in 159 AB’s; 1HR 19RBI; 1SB; 2%BB/19%K rates; .224 vs. LHP; .182 vs RHP; .246 over last 30 days; .270 with RISP; 38 games at 3B with 4 errors (.962); 6 games at 2B with 2 errors (.938). AFter an at times promising rookie season in Williamsport, Campbell has really struggled this year.

Damek Tomscha, 23, Phils 17th round pick in 2014; .253/.351/.364 in 162 AB’s; 2HR 18RBI; 1SB; 10%BB/18%K rates; .263 vs. LHP; .248 vs RHP; .314 over last 30 days; .233 with RISP; 23 games at 3B with 2 errors (.973); 6 games at 1B without an error.  I would like to see Tomscha receive more time at 3B.  Slow start but has picked it up.

  1. I hope Ruf’s demotion to Lehigh Valley doesn’t block Stassi. Although I disagree with the move of Ruf, both he and Stassi should be playing everyday, one in the OF and another at 1B. The best player could be Howard’s successor. Hoskins to Clearwater is a no-brainer. Let’s see what they do.

    1. Charles should move to LHV as well, creating room for Hoskins @ Reading. His age, approach and #’s warrant him a test against AA pitching.

      1. Don’t you think a jump from Lakewood to Reading is risky for Hoskins? A move to Clearwater would be best for him and if he does well promote him at years end to Reading.

  2. Willians Astudillo’s ‘playing time has been diminishing lately’….he was in XST for a period…not sure if he was nursing an ailment or not.

  3. related to this post – thanks for taking the time to put this writeup together.  Not related to this post – who has the ability to do things with the PP site, such as for example, add a link under the top-menu header for draft to add the 2015 draft (assuming something like that is thought to be worthwhile?) Thanks again         Q
