Box Score Recap – 5/24/2015

Lehigh Valley (18-27) missed their chance to sweep their 4-game series against the Charlotte Knights, 7-5, when the bullpen couldn’t hold onto a 5-3 lead.  Adam Morgan survived his 6.0 innings and left with the lead.  Clton Murray blew the save and Cesar Jimenez took the loss.  The IronPigs managed 5 runs off 37-year old, former major leaguer Brad Penny, mostly with the help of Knights’ miscues.  Five of the last six IronPigs’ outs were recorded on strike outs.  Cody Asche had an infield single, Dom Brown had a walk.  Chase d’Arnaud went 3-5 with a home run and 2 RBI.  Anthony Vasquez (1-0, 1.69) pitches tomorrow.

Reading (23-19) beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 3-2.  Ben Lively got the win with 5.2 innings of 5-hit ball.  Adam Loewen relieved in the sixth and allowed an inherited runner to score before closing out the inning.  Nefi Ogando got the save though he made things interesting by issuing leadoff walks in each of his two innings.  Roman Quinn collected a hit and his 20th stolen base.  Brock Stassi had a hit, walk, and 35th RBI.  Harold Martinez hit his 2nd home run.  Brad Pointer went 2-3 with an RBI.  Since a 4-game stretch when he struck out 7 times in 13 at bats, Pointer has gone 6-24 over the last 9 games, raising his average above .200 and striking out only 4 times.  Aaron Nola (6-2, 1.54) pitches  tomorrow.

Clearwater (22-22) beat the Palm Beach Cardinals, 3-1.  Colin Kleven allowed 2 hits and struck out eight in 6.0 innings.  The Threshers scratched out 2 go-ahead runs on wild pitches in the top of the seventh, and the bullpen pitched shutout ball to lock up the win.  Two double plays over the last three innings helped preserve the win.  Willians Astudillo went 2-4, and Dylan Cozens went 1-3 with a double.  Chase Harris picked up the only RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the game-tying run.   No game tomorrow, no decision on Tuesday’s pitcher when the Threshers return home to host the Fort Myers Miracle.  Tuesday should be Victor Arano’s (0-5, 6.44 in 6 starts) turn in the rotation.

Lakewood (21-21) beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 8-2.  Ricardo Pinto held the visitors to 2 runs on 6 hits in his 6.0 innings.  Scott Harris and Manny Martinez pitched shutout ball over the last 3 innings.  Malquin Canelo went 3-5 with a double and 3 RBI, pushing his average back over .300.  Damek Tomscha also had 3 hits and a double.  Herlis Rodriguez had 2 hits.  Josh Taylor (2-3, 5.97) pitches tomorrow.

Williamsport (0-0) starts their season on the road against the State College Spikes on June 19th, home opener on June 20th.

    1. sanduskyohio….unfortunately this time next month, Mitch, probably on the proverbial bubble, could be a casualty of attrition with the new ‘freshmen’ class coming in.

  2. After drawing 11 BBs in his first 23 games, Tocci only has 2 BBs in his past 17 games. His OBP (.403) about to drop below .400 for the first time this season. Certainly not a concern as no one thought he would get on-base at a .400+ clip. At the same time, I would like to see that BB rate closer to 9% than 5%. Right now he’s at 7.3%

Altherr had a rough week but still maintained decent BB and K rates. He’s striking out at a 14.6% rate, and he has a LD rate of 24%. Those type of ratios generally get you a .300+ hitter. He’s been a bit unlikely this season but I’d still contend that he has been one of the season’s most improved. I suspect he contends for a roster spot in 2016 though I think he’d benefit from 500+ PAs in LV. Would like to see him promoted sooner than later.

After a bit of a rough patch, Quinn has only struck out 6 times in the past 14 games bringing his K rate down to 19% on the season. He also only has 1 BB over his last 11, bring that rate down to 6.3% which is nearly 50% lower than any prior professional season. He’s an exciting player, but I still want to see more

      1. Did my post say a single thing about Altherr being ready for a major league spot? Put your panties back on Murray

      2. I agree that Altherr is likely a year and a half away from CBP, assuming all goes well, but a guy really doesn’t need to hit .300+ to make it to the bigs. Batting average by itself is not a great stat for measuring hitters’ performance. If you want to use a single number, how about weighted OBP, OPS, or OPS+?

        1. Yes, agreed, but it’s a very friendly hitting environment there. I’ve seen the plate discipline I’ve wanted to see, but the big issue looks like it will continue to be the hit tool – and you can say the same about 5 or 10 of our hitting prospects – and so many of our tool shed prospects over the last 20 plus years. It’s part of the Marti Woelover legacy. High on athleticism, chronically lacking in either hit tool or plate discipline – or both.

  3. Interesting stat. Zach Eflin is currently the youngest player in the Eastern League (Tied for 9th youngest in all AA).

And what in the world is going on with Cam Perkins?

  4. Nola with a tough outing today.
I wonder if there where extenuating circumstances that affected his pitching today, ie Aumont and sun-glare
