Lehigh Valley won the suspended game from Monday night, 2-1 on Russ Canzler’s pinch single.
The IronPigs won the scheduled game against Syracuse, 5-4. Adam Morgan couldn’t hold an early 4-0 lead. Cody Asche and Dom Brown each went 2-5 with a double. Tyler Henson went 3-4 with 3 RBI.
Reading lost 6-4 to New Hampshire. Ben Lively suffered his first loss. Roman Quinn belted a 400 foot home run and was caught stealing for the sixth time this season.
Clearwater beat Brevard County 6-2. Colin Kleven got the win. Andrew Pullin hit his third home run. Chase Harris had stole 2 bases (7 for 8 now). Dylan Cozens stole his fifth. Aaron Brown and Angelo Mora each went 2-4. Mora is now hitting .347 in 75 AB. J.P. Crawford went 1-4 with a walk and 3 Ks. Mitchell Walding suffered a Golden Sombrero.
Lakewood lost 8-2 to Delmarva. Josh Taylor gave up 6 runs in 4.0 innings. The Claws managed only 2 hits, singles by Damek Tomscha and Derek Campbell.
DSL Phillies begin their season on Saturday, May 30th.
VSL Phillies beat the VSL Rays, 10-2. Lenin Rodriguez went 1-2 with a double and a walk. Rafael Gamboa (not the 16-year old Gamboa) hit a home run, went 2-5, and had 4 RBI.
Here’s the affiliate scoreboard from MiLB.
The Threshers are on the road this week. I’ll be attending the AAC Tournament. I’ll provide the daily box score report, but it will be a little sketchier than usual.
Extra Innings –
- Maikel Franco went 3-4 with 3 RBI.
- Ryan Howard, hitting in front of Franco, went 0-4 with 3 Ks.
- No organization transactions.
- In AAC action
- USF RHP Jimmy Hegert gets the win over Memphis. He threw 6.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 8 K, 100 pitches, 75 strikes. Hard to gauge velo on stadium gun, 88-90, T91 maybe. More comfortable labelling him as an upper 80s guy. Luke Maglich had 4 RBI on a homer and a double.
- BA #24 prospect Ian Happ had a couple of infield hits but his Bearcats couldn’t hold off the #1 seeded Houston Cougars. StatsKing had Happ at 4.10 home to first from the left side, 4.22 from the right side.
- OF Kyle Survance homered for the Cougars and beat out an infield hit that allowed a run to score.
Another nice outing by Aumont. Time to call up Dom.
Franco NICE..

I think you are right. Too many negatives in his game and I’m not sure he’s the right chemistry for the clubhouse. Sometimes the wheel is turning and other times I think the hamster is dead.

I saw a little of the AAC game with UC last night. The announcers mentioned that Happ has been surrounded by FR in the batting order all season. Teams can pitch around him.

One of the sites’ mocks, BA, MLB or ESPN, now have Happ at post-20 pick next month.

The thought is that if someone thinks Happ is a secondbaseman he will go in the 10-20 range. If he is an Outfielder he is more likely 20-25 range. If he is not good enough to play 2B in college he probably isn’t good enough to play it in the pros.

Was at the Lakewood game last night, took a long ride to see a terrible game. Taylor I believe had only 1 clean inning, was hit around hard. The gun showed him sitting 91-92, his off-speed was 75-77. Scott Harris didn’t look any better.
Manny Martinez was likely the most exciting player to see all night, I really don’t know anything about him but he was firing it in there as his pitches just seemed to jump out of his arm. I saw him hit 94 an 95 but it just seemed like his pitches had some real life to them. I also liked Austin Davis, should have written down what he was throwing, think he topped out at 91 but I could be wrong. I believe there was a Phillies scout in the row in front of me, should of asked him.
As for the hitters, Cumana is so small but he put a charge into one ball. Tromp was the most disappointing, 2 pitches, 2 outs. Grullon had a bigger frame then I was expecting. Sandberg had a couple ab’s where he fouled off a number of pitches, took one for a ride that I thought was a hit for sure but it was a good defensive play to rob him.

I wasn’t sure how to bring this up last night. Still not sure if it is news worthy. Just speculation, so I’ll bury it here. Last night, I saw Brandon Leibrandt (or his doppleganger) at the Cougars/Bearcats, AAC tournament game. He wasn’t alone, so I chose not to bother him during his private time. Besides, sometimes it’s more fun to let your mind run amok.
At first, I thought the organization let him come home between starts out of the goodness of it’s heart. His next start should be Saturday in Palm Beach not Clearwater, so I’m not buying that.
Maybe he was sore after his 9 inning complete game Monday night, so they sent him back for treatment at their facilities in Clearwater. Plausible.
Maybe his next start isn’t in Palm Beach. Bingo!
Reading’s rotation through the next week is: Wednesday, Nola: Thursday, off; Friday,Biddle; Saturday Game 1, TBD; Game 2, Eflin; Sunday thru Wednesday, TBD. I would have expected spot-starter Vasquez to pitch the other game Saturday and Windle to make his normal start on Sunday, but Vasquez is in LHV now. Maybe with Thursday’s off day they are considering pitching Windle on Saturday. Or, …
Clearwater’s rotation through the next week is: Wednesday, Arano: Thursday, Leiter; Friday,Whitehead; Saturday thru Wednesday, TBD. Leibrandt is supposed to pitch Saturday, but that game and all after it are TBD.
So, maybe some rotation changes are likely for some of the affiliates, and Leibrandt was in Clearwater packing and his next start is in Portland NOT Palm Beach. Or not. We’ll see.

Piniero is just the kind of veteran presence we need in the clubhouse to put this young team over the hump…that was GM speak- kidding of course

I would love to watch Nola every time he pitched, he’s that good down there. One more outing and he’s up to LHV I think.

Yeah, I think this is the “do you think he’s ready for a promotion?” start. If he does well, as we all expect he will, he should be promoted sometime in the next week or two. It would be fun to see Brandon (“dont call me Charlie”) Leibrandt take his place in the rotation.

I’ll tell you what, there’s a lot of Joe Morgan in Roman Quinn – I love him. He positively crushed that home run last night – it was way out of the ballpark. As I said yesterday, he probalby won’t be in the top 40 prospects in baseball when the season ends, but he should be – he’s an electric talent. In fact, I think he’s so talented that I’m not quite sure what his ceiling is because, as with other supremely talented players, his ceiling seems to expand as we watch him.
I think, when he finally comes up, it will become immediately clear that he is the centfielder of the future. It will be similar to the experience I think we are all having watching Mikael Franco at third right now. I really like Cody Asche and hope he finds a role on the team going forward, but does anyone truly think he should be playing third ahead of Michael Franco?

Duh, Apparently, I DON’T know how to spell his name. It’s Maikel. Not Mikael or Michael. I’ll fall on that sword for that stupid comment

It took me a long time to remember that spelling. Lots of mistyping his name into the milb.com search box.
I like what Quinn is doing a lot but I would refrain from naming him in the same sentence with a guy who has almost 100 career WAR (I know you weren’t equating them). He’ll get his due on prospect lists if he maintains a BB/K ratio like he has in his last 10 games, or like he did at the start of the season. There was a lull in between but as long as he has good at-bats his skills will stand out.

I love the fact that Quinn seemed to cool off for a week or so and then got hot again. That’s not usually an accident, its usually from hard work and a great indicator of future success.

When I say Joe Morgan, I’m talking about the skill set and even the physical build. Morgan, of course, was the extreme. What put Morgan over the top, in addition to his amazing physical skills, was the fact that he combined a 60 hit tool, with 75/80 speed and a true 80 in plate discipline. Obviously, Quinn has not shown nearly the same type of plate discipline, but the physical skills are similar. In many ways, Quinn may also be similar to Jimmy Rollins.

Not to belabor the point but when Joe Morgan was 22 he was in his second season in the big leagues, made the All-Star team, and hit .285/.410/.391 with twice as many walks as strikeouts.
Maybe a better comp is Mike Cameron? Cameron and Quinn are not built the same but perhaps have the same game – speed with some pop and good CF defense?

I know all that stuff, I was talking about a loose comparison based on physical tools. Of course he’s not Joe Morgan.

Roman Quinn, OF, Phillies, Double-A Reading: We knew the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect was fast. He earned an 80 grade from MLB.com for his run tool this offseason after he stole 30-plus bases for a third straight season in 2014. The Phillies also moved him from shortstop to center field, because his speed will play out there and they didn’t want him bumping into top prospect J.P. Crawford.
And if you thought a move to Double-A would slow the 21-year-old down, think again. He’s swiped 11 bags and added five triples in 25 contests. Those are good on their face, but when thrown in with a few other factors (frequency of stolen bases, stolen base success rate, runs scored percentage, among others), you’d see he has a 9.3 Speed Score, making him the only player in Triple-A or Double-A to post a number higher than 9.0 on the stat that uses a 0-10 scale. That beats out Byron Buxton (8.8), Travis Jankowski (8.8) and Mallex Smith (8.7), each of whom also have 70-or-above running grades. Only Jose Peraza put up a Speed Score higher than 9.0 last season, and Quinn’s number itself was just 7.2 (although that came after he missed time due to a ruptured Achilles, which may have caused the brakes to be applied early on).
One thing is for sure: one of the Minors’ fastest players is back to burning rubber.

Nola looked good again. Vasquez also looking good for Lehigh. If they had a crystal ball and knew that both Buc, and Bil were going down they may have tried to do elevator moves sooner with Nola and Leibrandt. Lets hope that Rube and crew are more in Reading just to bless the moves.

I just saw the Reading box score – Nola with yet another gem – 7 innings, no runs, 4 hits, 1 BB, and 7 Ks. I don’t think people fully appreciate what his line means in a hitters league like the Eastern League. I am confident that, if he were promoted to the big leagues today, he’d have no problem holding his own.
That said, I expect his next start will be for the IPigs and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he were in the major leagues by late July or early August. He’ll be ready and only FA concerns will likely alter those plans.

Anyway you may have covered this previously but what is with Arano….yuck. You have been watching him, is he as bad as his era suggests? Saw 4 errors today from the FL boys, what’s the deal with that??

FWIW, believe it or not…Larry Anderson raved about Arano this spring on a few occasions. And he was watching all the new young arms, but signaled out Victor Arano. Lets remember he is just 20-years old in High A, that is something else…next season if he is still there he could dominant the FSL.

Quinn needs to get 400 at bats at least he needs to get a full season in.Franco wow great start , the 1 ab Logan gave him a 94 mph first pitch witch he laced for a single drove in 2 runs. The Phillies announcers went nuts on why Logan came with a fb. As long as Franco can lay off the outside junk he’s going to be good. Nola should be up by the All star break.

Bring up Aumont!! His equanimity on the STARTER’s role has far surpassed his mound behavior as a reliever. It seems psychological to me, but whatever–the big club has a dearth of starters like desert water-drinkers and he has put up -now-good numbers in several games in a row. “It seems to me” that it is the right needful time to go get him up.
And, the move would certainly give him a deserved acknowledgement that might help him overcome his past failures. The guy is 26!!…with plenty of instructs already behind him.
