    1. Upside compared with how bad he’s played? There’s really not much room to get worse.

This was unnecessary. My apologies. Not gonna delete it though. Wouldn’t be right.

IMO – Higher upside than Walding (below league average 3B), Gamboa, (league average SS), Alezones, (#4 starter), Keys, (#4 starter), Lino, (below average starting catcher).

    2. I think the burden of proof is on you to show why Walding is a prospect. He has 1,000 ABs now and has yet to do anything with the stick. Last year he repeated a level, barely improved offensively and was no longer particularly young.

From what I hear he is a good defender and a good guy. I hope something clicks for him, I really do. But it seems incredibly unlikely at this point. I would much rather have someone with little upside but high probability of contributing (Neris) or someone with lots of upside but low probability of contributing (Gamboa, Oliver) at this point.

  1. Is it finally Gamboa time? Please. My will to go on was nearly broken three picks ago. Somehow I trudge on. Mainly because voting is pretty easy. It’s like one click basically. Pretty simple.

  2. Hi Jim – is there room on the poll for Miguel Nuñez? I might not vote for him next time, but he should be part of the debate, IMO.

    1. Hey, Brad – I’ll add him to the next poll. His season numbers don’t look that good, but I covered him last season. I remember that he really came on in his last 7-8 starts, only one clunker. If he develops better control, he could improve exponentially.

I’ll add Canelo, too. Somebody further down asks about him.

      1. Is Jhon Nunez a part of the process?
He is the 6’3″Panamanian LHP signed last year after Brito and Gamboa?

        1. He could be. The only facts I know about him are – Panama, LHP, around $100K signing bonus from a Salisbury article back in July 2014. (Matt repored $90K, I think.) I did not see him at Instructs. I purposely kept the 16-year olds off the poll because they’re only 16. Gamboa made it when I added “cool” names back at 20 only because I thought we were stopping at 30, and Arquimedes is a cool name. If you want him, Brito, Arauz, L. Rodriguez, or anyone else added, let me know. I’ll be glad to add anyone.

    1. Agreed on Gueller (that ship has sailed), but Oliver only had one short season of relief after he was worn out from his college season. He was a high pick who apparently could have been even higher if not for some “issues.” Based on his WP performance, I can see being down on him, but based on his draft spot and college body of work, I see him as a solid prospect. This is probably a make or break year for him though.

    2. The pre-draft reports on Oliver were good. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I see some similarities with Adam Morgan, another college pitcher with good stuff who went from nowhere on the radar screen to the #3 prospect in the system in the course of one season. Do I think it’s likely that happens with Oliver? Absolutely not. We’re voting for the 38th best prospect in a system that is not exactly top tier, by all accounts (even if I think some of those accounts are a little too harsh). With respect to Brad, I see a lot more reason to vote for Oliver than to vote for a 17-year-old on the basis of his big bonus and cool name (though I must admit it is a very cool).

      1. agreed. With Garcia finally off the board (I’m voted for him 10 times in a row I think), I have Oliver next up. He absolutely has the potential to be something

  3. To follow-up on comments from yesterday, I think its amazing 170+ fan are still voting. That’s an outstanding number, in my opinion.

And most of the votes are straight–people are still taking this serious. Its a blast.

I never thought there would be so much interest in the 38th best prospect in our system!

    1. Okay, Fritz. I’ll continue out to 50. The extended weather forecast down here doesn’t look like it’s going to be condusive to outdoor practice for pitchers, except for a cameo for the snowbirds who show up at the Carpenter Complex. (I apologize to all y’all up in the northeast who are looking forward to a couple storms today and this weekend.) If I publish a poll every night, I can finish up by the start of full practices the following week. I’ll start creating the polls tonight. IF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE WANT TO SEE SOMEBODY ADDED TO THE CURRENT POLL LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS SECTION. I’ll make sure they get on it. It is nice to see all the discussion over players at this point. But nyphilsmaniac19 also has a good observation. I know I’ve got nothing better to do.

  4. I have Neris, then Hiciano and finally Araujo. I can’t vote for Gamboa based on bonus. Just as I couldn’t vote Larry Greene onto the pole back in his first year and I think he had a few ABs. I’ve always liked Walding. People who’ve seen him talk about his beautiful swing. The light bulb comes on, from time to time, but mostly the bulb is burned out. I wouldn’t release him but I wouldn’t want him blocking Zach Green either.

    1. Depends on your definition of a prospect. I think of it as a minor leaguer who has legitimate MLB potential. There are lots of guys still on the list who fit that definition. Just at this point either the ceiling is low (Neris) or the probability of reaching the MLB is low (Gamboa).

    2. I don’t know about that. Some guys are only prospects to be middle relievers, but Neris is fairly certain to spend time in Philly this season. We’re not talking potential All-stars here, although with guys like Gamboa, whom I didn’t vote for because he hasn’t even played yet, an AS ceiling remains possible. Oliver also could be a plus major leaguer. I don’t give high probability, but history has shown that GCL stats aren’t great predictors of future success or failure and he does have good stuff, although as I joked yesterday, Aumont has better stuff and that hasn’t gotten him to where he needs to be. Martin has very good stuff and is back-sliding. Stuff is glitzy, but it isn’t enough. It’s one step up from BP raw power, a la Greene, unless it comes with control/command. It may be a little easier to teach control/command to a guy who went through college without getting it, than it is to teach a toolsy HS kid how to adapt adequately to lacking a hit tool, but still longish odds.

  5. Just sayin’- David Buchanan didn’t make the top 30 last season and reached mlb doing a decent job. It is challenging to find guys below the top 30 that could contribute but it does happen. We are still debating guys even now so that says something (maybe that we have nothing better to do)

  6. Now it’s between Oliver and Gamboa for me. They’re currently tied in the poll and either outcome would be just fine by me. I’m going with Gamboa because he got a higher bonus than Oliver and because I don’t want Brad to have a nervous breakdown.

  7. I know this is probably way too late but Malquin Canelo is interesting. Apparently he is a good defender at SS and he hit just below league average in LKW as a 19 yr old. Why isn’t he higher? Something I am missing here? Perhaps lack of upside?
