2015 Reader Top 30

Brandon Leibrandt takes the 35th prospect slot in our poll.  He received 34 of 162 votes (21%).  Willians Astudillo and Arquimedes Gamboa finished in a tie for second with 21 votes each.

  1. Garcia again. Solid fastball already and he shows promise with two secondaries. I can’t see Astudillo- a guy with little power, speed or defensive value- fitting in here.

    1. In case people have missed it, Garcia is ranked well higher than this by Baseball Prospectus, FanGraphs, and Matt Winkleman. BA also has Garcia higher than this, though not by much. He throws in the upper 80s and lower 90s which is average for an LHP, has a solid change and an inconsistent yet promising curve. He does not have ace upside, but he could be a back-end starter. The reports suggest he has a hig floor for a young guy. I recommend people refresh themselves to see why he should already be on the list:

  2. FTR, I am not one of the folks voting for Brian Pointer. Although…he did just single-handedly win the ABL Championship.

    I may be exaggerating his role. A little.

    1. No exagerration. I watched the games. After commenting on Pointer’s team leading 53 Ks during game one and stating that it was embarrassing to walk Pointer, the ninth batter in the line up, three times in game two, the Australian announcers apologized for these comments during game three. In fact they even suggested that he was a front runner for the series MVP. No kidding. Ultimately it was given to some Australian. Homers.

  3. I am. Kid has some pop in the bat , runs ok and a very solid defender. Will be in Reading with mighty Quinn patrolling the outfield. Still only 23 yrs old

  4. Last Poll someone (sorry dont know who) mentioned Chris Oliver. I thought I remember him being labeled as 1-2 rd talent but dropped because of issues. Ill take that here!

    1. I’ve been voting Oliver for the last 4-5 rounds even though the two times I saw him pitch last year, he looked pretty bad. Seems like he could easily have been a 2nd round pick. I expect with an off-season of work outs and a little break for his arm, he will bounce back with a strong year.

  6. I guess the best shortstop in the phillies system not named Crawford is not worthy of being Ranked! Malquin Canelo played up to high A at 19 years old. I’ve been a silent watcher on this sight and this year the ranking is very inaccurate IMO. Hector Neris is a guy who made his MLB debut and did not give up a run in winter ball has not been ranked yet but yet there are guys already ranked ahead of him who will never get out of A ball. SMH

    1. Actually, Camelo did NOT “play up to high A” as stated above. He was called up from XST when Anthony Phillips went onto the 7-day DL. When Phillips was activated 8 days later, Canelo returned to XST. This happens a lot prior to the short season squads starting their seasons. When the Threshers need a body they will often pluck one from the Complex rather than bring one up from Lakewood. When Phillips reported to Lakewood for a day on his way to finishing the season in Reading, Canelo was called up again to Clearwater. But when Roman Quinn finally made the active roster, Canelo was sent back to XST 18 days later. He ultimately went north with Williamsport for a few days before being called up to Lakewood when Crawford was promoted to Clearwater.

    2. Canelo is worth a spot on the list, but I’m not sure he’ll get on. I’d have him behind a handful of guys on the poll.

      Neris is a middle reliever, so it’s hard to get too excited about him. He may pitch in the majors for awhile, but his chance of being an impact player is lower than the chances of these guys in rookie ball.

  7. I agree with Chris. And middle relief is as important as closing, if he gives up a run or two the closer will never get in the game. Hector pitched as well last year as Jason Grilli did when he was at LV.

    1. It’s not that middle relief isn’t important, it’s that middle-relievers get that designation because they’re not good enough to be late-inning relievers. Basically, Neris might be a major leaguer, but it will probably be in a Chad Durbin-esque capacity. You can find those guys easily.

  8. I read an article that Morgan is pain free and read to go. They’ll strengthen him slowly and we might see him in the minors by May or June. His doctor performed a couple of shoulder surgeries on Schilling and prolonged his career to become the pitcher he became. Watson went to the same guy and the article thought he’d be ready to go this year. Shoulder’s are tricky and scary things for a pitcher but Morgan and Watson will be my “surprises” for 2015. Neither has even been mentioned in the top 40 and they could be back to normal after a detour for awhile.
