2015 Reader Top 30

Tommy Joseph takes the 30th prospect slot in our poll.  He received 70 of 287 votes (24%).  Nefi Ogando finished second with 33 votes.

I added Matt’s Phillies Minor Thoughts and FanGraphs to Industry Lists under Prospect Ranking.

Sorry for the delay bringing the poll for #31 up but we’ve been moving within Clearwater the past 4 days.  I’m tired, achey, and had to guide the technician on the phone to the proper solution to my internet problem.

  1. Joely Rodriguez again. He keeps the ball on the ground, and there’s some hope that he can miss more bats than he has in the past. He’ll be 23 all of next season and probably starts the year in AAA.

  2. one bad foul ball off his mask and ToJo has a permanent debilitating migraine/headache, and really cannot go outside in the sun for an indiscriminate amount of time because of light sensitivity, plus all of the other things that go along with a concussion, baseball players need to be able to concentrate and a really bad headache/migraine takes that away, and they play during the day alot so, bright lights and sun, he has already had a few concussion the next one could serious brain damage its like playing with fire when you are covered in gasoline. and if he doesnt catch which would cut down his odds of getting a concussion he is just a weak hitting 1st baseman or slower than Franco left fielder, so neither of those two have any value above org filler

These are valid points, but that’s why Joseph is ranked 30th rather than 7th or 8th, which is where he would probably be if he were just coming off a wrist injury and didn’t have the concussion issue. Nobody knows what will happen but I, for one, am extremely glad that he was forced to take a year off due to the wrist injury. For concussions, long, long periods of rest are often the only way the player can get back to form – so he essentially had the season off, as several NHL players have had after enduring a significant concussion. Many came back were able to play again on a long term basis (Gagne, Crosby). But, sure, it’s very dicey and at any time he could have the last concussion. I’m hopeful, given the rest, if he does have another concussion it won’t change the quality of his life (although it might require him to quit baseball or permanently shift out of the catching position, which would slash his value as a player), that would be tragic.

    3. This was a reply to a post that was removed , and it asked why he was ranked 30th , so I said what I thought the reason was, I hope he puts it behind him and has a super productive career with the Phillies of course

  5. Hoskins. After hearing scouts rave, figured he’d be 20-25. He’ll likely be top 15 twelve months from now, and preparing to start 2016 as starting AAA 1B

    1. Hoskins is my sleeper….can see him doing an Asche thru the system…just hope he eventually doesn’t do a Rizz at the AAA level.

    2. I think Hoskins is interesting too. But I fail to see why some people are so gung ho about him. He’s a 5th round pick who hasn’t proven anything yet (nor has he really had the opportunity to). I did read some positive opinions on him (mostly from Mitch Rupert) but nothing that I would categorize as “scouts raving”. Did I miss something?

      2. Hoskins hit 9 bombs in Williamsport and its the biggest yard in the NY-Penn League and he also led the Phillies in home runs during Fall Instructional League !! Is that enough !!

        1. Not really, no. We know he has power, but we don’t know if he can hit enough all the way up the ladder. The bar for offense at 1B is really high. Before we start saying he’s our 1B of the future, lets see if he can hit in full season ball. Also, 7 of his home runs came on the road.

    3. I also have not heard any raving of scouts about Hoskins. He only appears on one list of rankings of minor leaguers (MattWinks’ list at #37). His teammate Tromp outhit Hoskins, outran Hoskins, plays a tougher defensive position, and is six months younger. I don’t think Tromp is some stud but I don’t know why anyone would vote for Hoskins above Tromp, unless you think strikeout rate it the most important factor in determining prospect value.

      1. Exactly three years ago this month posters were saying the same thing about a guy with an approx. 25% K rate out of his first short season, Cody Asche.
        I like to have hope that Hoskins will be a very pleasant surprise this season.

  6. Ogando. The time is now for “ceiling” power armed reliever. If he can refine some sort of secondary offering and repeat his mechanics, him, Diekman & Giles could be the talk of the NL in regards to late-inning velo arms. The walk-rate has to come down however, but #31 is a perfect spot for him on this list.

  7. Rhys Hoskins, Joely Rodriguez, Brandon Leibrandt, Nefi Ogando, and Chris Oliver aren’t top 30 prospects in our system. That’s kind of cool, and you can’t be upset about that amount of depth, especially considering where we were 2 years ago.

    My only concern is that we don’t have a ton of upside. It seems that we have a ton of #3 starters with few prospects who could be #1-2 even if things break right. Hopefully Kilome or Mecias take that next step. Maybe #10 this year will solve that problem.

    2. Don’t forget Elniery Garcia, who was top 10 according to BP, top 20 according to MattWinks, and top 25 according to FanGraphs.

  9. I hope everyone will quit with the sour grapes. The list is made. Like all fair players I accept it as our list. It is fun as long as we don’t take it too seriously. Have fun with the next few. Concentrate on the present. I’m sticking with Trump. He showed last year that he is ready for a big season.

  10. Ogando. Then Oliver, Rodriguez, Tromp, Hoskins. Then I don’t know, there’s a lot of Latin names that sound cool (Elniery! Arquemedes!) but I’m not really sure about anything regarding the player attached to them, except some vague scouting reports. I may just stop voting at some point. Seems like there is a big drop after like 35, I don’t think the depth in this system really goes to 40 or 50. Even a guy like Hoskins seems like he’s probably org filler.

    2. I think Elniery Garcia belongs in that first group of names; higher than some of them actually. I mean, BP ranked him 9th in the entire system so there must be something there. They put above average to plus potential on all three of his pitches.

      1. Yeah, you’re totally right, in fact based on the BP ranking he should be on the list already. I’m just saying I have a hard time voting to rank some guy I think I had never heard of before these offseason rankings started coming out. At least Gamboa got a big bonus so I was at least dimly aware of him (though the fact that the Phillies signed THREE shortstops in the same signing season makes it confusing to keep them straight, at least for now). But Garcia kind of came out of nowhere for me.

  11. I think Brett Lindros is a better example. He was a top Islanders pick and never played due to concussions. Eric was great then got hurt. If you meant Brett, then my apologies.

  12. ‘Rich’ Mitch Walding yet again. As mentioned in previous threads, his plus power potential is what really sells me on him.
