The poll for #23 is up next. I have added the following requested players, this should bring requests up to date – Elvis Araujo, Ulises Joaquin, Colton Murray, Julio Reyes, and Yacksel Rios.
I had to postpone a trip this month. It was because of this trip that I needed to start the poll early. Now we’re going to have a couple weeks between the end of the Reader Top 30 and spring training. Since we have a deeper pool of prospects than in recent years, the second poll offers a way to fill time before spring training.
Went with Cameron Perkins as he is at AAA and could fill a MLB role as a platoon/#4 outfielder with the Phillies.

I voted Sandberg here. I have a number of guys I rated higher than where we currently are in the poll.

Love the idea of extending the poll to at least 40, if not 50. Curious to see if Leibrandt would even crack the Top 50.
Seriously, though, this is fun. And I reckon a quorum would be interested as well.
Voted Pinto here. An argument can be made that he’s a better prospect than the pitcher just chosen, Seve.

Same here. I’m voting Pinto until he makes the list.

Yeah I refamilarized myself with Pinto’s scouting reports a bit too late. Should have had him higher

Fwiw, I have Leibrandt at 36

Valentin then Encarncion.

I voted Liebrandt here, but after reading a couple more scouting reports, I don’t think it was the right call. I think fastball, then control, are the most important skills for a pitcher to have, and while he has some control, his fastball is well below average. I’ll go with someone else next poll.
LikeLike
True, control is easier to correct than increasing velocity.
LikeLike
Your right, but how many Phillies more talked about prospects have great velocity but can’t control it. Martin, Ogando, Aumount, etc, etc.
I love what Jamie Moyer did with his career. He made KK look like Randy Johnson.
I got to face Moyer in high school by the way…..good guy!

Wow Sandberg has a .286 OBP in 400+ PA’s at pretty low level baseball that’s pretty darn bad.
Pullin through LKW otoh has a .333 OBP. Can’t really argue with Valentin if he is the pick. he at least has a .351 OBP which he gets out of a gaudy 11%+ BB rate.

I be been more bullish than most on Pullin, but Valentin is the better prospect at this point. I believe Jim said he saw Pullin in the OF during instructs which would obviously hurt his value, though it might just be away to spread ABs around since both should be in CLW this year

I’m curious to see what they do with Pullin. They could send him back to LWood to get playing time. Or they could send both (Pullin and Valentin) to CWater and take turns playing them and moving them around. Pullin can play LF while Valentin seems to have SS and 3B possibilities also.
LikeLike
Yes it will be interesting. Pullin did fine at LWD last year so I assume theyll promote him. Maybe give him a little work in LF, Valentin a little work at SS and hope obe plays themselves into Reading mid season

I agree that he was just in the OF for ABs. The three LA, 16-year old, middle infielders were at instructs and got a lot of playing time at 2B and SS. A lot more than Encarnacio and Martelo did in 2013. E got a few innings at third, but both would usually PH for the DH later in the games.

I give Sandberg a bit of a pass since his football career means he probably never saw high end pitching until very recently. But yeah, we need start seeing improvement this year

I don’t want to trash Sandberg there absolutely could be something there but with the early results I could not put him with good conscience ahead of those 2 guys and probably a few others still on the list.

I agree

Yes, and this was the first year where he wasn’t a 2-sport athlete. He’s learning to concentrate on just baseball and has to keep adjusting to improve. He can’t get by on superior all around athletic skills like he could in high school. He strikes me as being very competitive. If a corner plays back, he’ll take the bunt base hit. Late in a game, if he’s 0 for 3, the corner better be alert. He hustles out of the box. I saw him make it to third standing on a misplayed, shallow fly ball that dropped between the center and right fielders. He projects attitude. I don’t mean this as any sort of talent comp, and I haven’t said this before because it sounds crazy when I just think it (like now), but he has the same sort of swagger as he walks to the plate as xxxxx xxxxx (nah, I’m not going to do that to him). And then he bunts. He’s going to be ranked too high for our next exercise, but if he were ranked lower, I would have considered him as my break out sleeper.

Who exactly were you talking about? Derek Jeter?

Good lord, no. Jeter’s a one-of-a-kind player. The number of x’s was random.

Ahh ok I actually thought you were trying to say Bryce Harper but forgot the x for the r (Harper def walks up to the plate w a ton of swagger) didn’t know it was random. My fault.

I like Pinto here but would be fine with Valentin. They may not have huge upside but both have shown some ability to perform on the field. I am skeptical of Sandberg for all the reasons already stated.

I’ve seen Pinto as having a number 3 starter ceiling. It sounds like he’s a breaking ball away from shooting up the rankings (not that that is a small thing).
LikeLike
The one aspect of Pinto that could be a detriment to him at some point down the road is his smallish size – 6′ pitcher at about 175lbs, And he is now 21-years old, so not sure he will be growing anymore.
LikeLike
Yeah frame and lack of breaking ball are the concerns there. Sounds like a good fastball and possibly plus change. Real nice K/BB per 9. I did read where someone (FG or Matt w., maybe?) thought he might be a candidate for a double jump to CLW.
LikeLike
Yeah, physical growth is probably not in his future but luckily he already has plenty on the fastball that it doesn’t require more projection. Like Mds said, if he can develop a good 3rd pitch then he has a real shot at being a mid-rotation starter.

I went for Pinto here and look to vote for Pullin next if Pinto gets in. If not same order.

Valentin again Sandberg and Pujols both need a yr at lakewood.
