Box Score Recap – 6/24/2014

Really nice start from Severino Gonzalez – 2R on 1H 1HR 1BB and 7K – he’s only given up four walks in his last six starts, (since a five walk mess on May 22), and has 33K in that same span (36.2IP). For him to have much success, he’ll need to keep that up going forward, and limit the home runs allowed – he’s given up seven over that same time frame. That won’t fly. Also from Reading – don’t get your hopes up just yet, but Zach Collier’s got eight hits in six games since he came off the DL.

Cam Perkins left the Lehigh Valley game after running into a wall on defense in the first inning. No word yet on the extent of his injuries, as far as I’ve seen.

Two hits a piece for Andrews Knapp and Pullin as Mark Leiter and Co. got shelled by Greensboro. Williamsport was on the other end of the cannon as they put up a ten spot on Auburn. Cord Sandberg extended his hitting streak to 13 games, Jiandido Tromp hit two home runs, (again – guy only hits two at a time, apparently), and was a single short of The Big Wheel, Jan Hernandez hit his second bomb of the season, and Aaron Brown had two hits.

In the GCL, Luis Encarnacion’s first pro hit was also his first pro home run, and Damek Tomscha and Jake Sweaney each had two hits. Seranthony Dominguez pitched well in his stateside debut, striking out five in 3.2 innings of work. He took the loss as he couldn’t hold off the Yankees in the tenth. Bryan Martelo was 3-5 in the DSL, his first multi-hit game as a pro.

  1. Went to Williamsport game last night. First thing that struck me was just how huge a field it is( 350 and 345 down the lines and 405 to center. Lots of foul territory like old Turner Field in Atlanta).

Tromp put on a power show. Both HR’s might have been 12- 15 rows back at CBP. I guess he was tired because his double only one hopped to the wall in left. By far, he was the one player I really didn’t have a handle on,who impressed me offensively. IMO, needs work on his defense and reading balls off the bat.

Sandberg and Brown are impressive but need to have better discipline at the plate. Will be real fun to follow. Brown must have impressed the Auburn 3rd base coach with his arm because they didn’t want to test him.

Grullon is another guy who impressed me. Overall, he had a good night behind the plate blocking balls, commanding the infield and using his arm. Yes, one ball got by him but he must have blocked 7-8. Yes, he had a throwing error to first on a dropped third strike but he picked a runner off first and his throws have zip. If there is anything C in the system with a better arm, I would like to see it. IMO, there is not much development physically. Has an open stance but hit a rocket to right-center.

    1. Thanks for the report. I am getting very exciting for Williamsport’s three game stand in Brooklyn in July.

    1. From Chris King of BP on twitter: “Grenny Cumana is intriguing. Looked pretty nice at SS with a good arm. Clean line drive swing and he can run”

  2. Great to see Pullin and Knapp hitting again.

Would anyone mind discussing the scouting reports/upside of Damek Tomscha and Aaron Brown?

  3. Tromp is definitely an exciting young player. Great to hear in-person reports about the extent of his power. He’s looking like a top 30 candidate for sure. This is his age 20 year, so he has time to mature and come into his own. I assume if he continues to hit like this for a few more weeks, he’ll go back to Lakewood.

        1. The problem isn’t lack of space in Clearwater, the problem is lack of an outfielder in Lakewood who is ready to move up.

        1. I am high on Aaron Brown also, but must remind myself to take in consideration his age for that level.

  4. Grullon looked poor at the plate the two games I saw last week, hopefully he is coming out of the slump. He is solid defensively for the most part, with a few youthful mistakes.

  5. The Williamsport boxscores have been one of the most entertaining reads that I’ve seen in the last few seasons. There looks to be actual talent there on the offensive side. Small sample size caveats implied.

    1. Tocci has an uncanny resemblance to former Phil Garry Maddox at the plate..long and wiry.
. Hope it turns out that way down the road.

  6. At what point does the organization start to have to consider Valle as a viable prospect again? A catcher seems like one of the least likely positions for a team to take a Rule 5 flier on, but I might be a little concerned with leaving him unprotected next year. I’d like to see him get a lot of playing time through the rest of this season. That might mean splitting time with Rupp, Moore, and maybe Joseph between AA and AAA. If he can further improve his plate discipline and approach, I think he becomes another valuable catcher in the system, even if he’s still not a projected starter.

    1. I’d say that getting his OBP over .300 for the season might be a good first step, although one that might be beyond his abilities, given his record above Single A.

    2. If I’m not mistaken, he’s a minor league FA this year unless they add him back to the 40-man, so he won’t be in the Rule 5 draft. He can sign anywhere that wants him, minor league deal, or a big league deal onto a 40-man roster with one more option left. Can’t imagine anyone would add him to a 40-man roster unless there’s fierce competition. Can’t imagine there will be fierce competition unless he really make the offense work the next 2 months.

  7. Anyone know anything on LHP Ranger Suarez? Lefthander who issued his 1st walk today in 41 innings with 41 strikeouts in the VSL.
