Phillippe Aumont started his inning of work really well by striking out the first batter he faced. Except for one thing…yeah, wild pitch. Guy gets on base, steals second, scores on a single to center. DYK – Aumont is French for “Oh, for the love of-“?
Ethan Stewart somehow managed to hold Tampa scoreless for five innings, despite allowing three hits and walking five, as CLR shut out the Yankees in a seven-inning affair. Stewart is French for “Uhh…I’m from British Columbia, not Quebec”.
Andrew Pullin, Willians Astudillo and Samuel Hiciano all had multi-hit games in Lakewood’s 3-1 win over Hickory. Pullin also drew his 20th walk, a marked improvement over his 2013 total of seven. Six home runs after just three last year is pretty nice also, and he’s OPing nearly .800 for the month to help out his season line after a weak April.

pretty good day for Andrew Knapp, getting back behind the plate finally.

Good call. Meant to mention that and it slipped my mind. I think Steven Falk on Twitter said the plan is to do the same Saturday and continue towards a regular workload.

CWater up to 15 wins. I can see why they wanna add Crawford and Nola there. Getting ready for that playoff push.

Doesn’t the 2nd half of the season start with a clean record or is that only at Lwood?

Has there been any updates on Shane Watson & Adam Morgan

Watson has begun a throwing program. Haven’t heard on Morgan, I don’t think.

The Lakewood box score shows some imbalances. Knapp is back catching. That leaves 3 active catchers. Astudillo’s bat has to be in the lineup. So he plays 1B yesterday. There are no listed first basemen on the roster. Andy Knapp can probably play it in a pinch. Zach Green can play it and maybe an outfielder like Nick Ferdinand. Zach Green needs ABs so he’s DH’ing yesterday. Having Walding and Green, both 3Bs, on the roster is stifling growth. I don’t know what to do about it. It seems like everyone’s out of position.
Some of the drafted College guys could go to Lakewood so it’s time to move some guys up. Astudillo could be moved up so Knapp can take most of the reps at catcher. They’ve cleared the way for Crawford to move up. Hiciano could also be moved up. Cozens isn’t ready and Tocci clearly isn’t ready. That could open some spots for some of these drafted College guys.
On the pitching side, the only starters who “might” deserve callup are Leiter and Prosinski but Leiter’s been up and down and could probably use 5 or more good starts before movin’ on up is considered. Prosinski already failed at CLW so he needs more good outings before his confidence comes back and he’s had time to digest why he failed at CLW.

I think Walding eventually ends up being the odd man out in the position logjam. There’s only one 3B and at some point Green needs to be the one playing there. I could maybe see Astudillo and Leiter being moved up, and maybe Forsythe and Reyes too.

Those are three of the guys I was thinking as well – I think Rios instead of Reyes, but now I see he’s getting a start tonight. If they want to try to stretch him out, I say go for it, and leaving him there is sensible.

I’m glad to see he’s getting a start. I remember the positive scouting report that Eric Longenhagen wrote on him last year. He’s already nearing his IP total from last season, but maybe there’s something there.

Agreed. He’s about to turn 21, which leaves him a little old for the level. He’s got one more year until he needs to be protected, so I’m down with giving him innings now and seeing if it’s worthwhile. If nothing else it gets the guy more reps on what may be a bullpen arm. Maybe they were throwing him in the pen the first half to keep his total down and now they expect him to start the second half and into next year. That would get him to likely no more than 110-120IP for the year. Seems reasonable.

Green isn’t healthy enough to play 3B yet. He’s going to split 1B and DH for several weeks before he goes back to 3B. They already removed Olberto from the roster so I think they’re fine for now. They’ll rotate with the DH.

Quinn has really been heating up lately, which is great to see. Any idea as to why he was moved to CF without getting time at 2B?

Both positions have similar defensive values, but his speed plays up in CF, so I would guess that’s the answer. That or they don’t like his footwork in the infield and think he’s more natural in CF, where he played in high school.

When is the Quinn move taking place? I read about it a couple of days ago and he has played short every day since. Are they waiting until JP moves up?

Tocci continues his hot hitting, with a hit and a walk in 4…wait no 3 PAs.
Can someone explain to me why one of our top prospects is hitting 9th so he only comes to the plate 3 times in a game?

Most of the year he was hitting first or second, this really isn’t a big deal.

I think they are trying to keep the wear on him down. It sounds like he is putting in a lot of work prior to games according to the article above. And it also sounds like the organization is showing a lot of patience in waiting for him to develop physically and at least they understand it is a process that can be enhanced but not sped up.

If he adds 20 points every two weeks he’ll be a slugger by the end of the year. They should all try that.

There’s some hope yet. Hewitt is no longer with us. Gillies is removed from the 40. Can Aumont be far behind? Make way for anything else……
