2014 Draft

There are 30 picks to be made today, some will be overslot and at slot ($100,000) HS players, some will be guys who will never sign, and then there will be college players picked for their ability to fill a need on an organizational roster.  We will keep it updated when we have a chance.

A quick note from Brad – We have our first signing reported by the player on Twitter – It’s 10th Rounder Matt Shortall. No bonus info yet, but bet on saving a $100K plus on that one. Anyway, I’ll be working to get the draft tracker up after we have all 40 picks.

  4. we have no way of knowning that without being in the room when the scouts talk to these kids. I can however infer that the first 5 or 6 players on the mlb.com best available list were top 3 round prospects and dropped most likely because they let it be known they weren’t signable.

  12. kid they took in rounf 12 was ruled ineligible in 2013 doesnt say why but has hit 95 and is lefthanded.

  14. from BA infront of the wall Austin Davis, lhp, Cal State Bakersfield (No. 83): A true sleeper, Davis posted a 6.49 ERA as a freshman in 2012 and redshirted in 2013. But the 6-foot-5, 240-pound lefthander showed 91-94 mph heat this fall, along with a promising 79-81 slurve and good feel for a high-70s changeup with fade. His delivery has some rigidity, and he has a lot to prove, but he is ticketed for a slot in Cal State Bakersfield’s weekend rotation this spring. If he succeeds, he could shoot up draft boards, because hulking lefties with his arm strength are tough to find.

  20. Im wondering if Phils take a shot with someone like Karston Whitson from Flor. A former 1st rounder who hurt his arm 2 yr. ago. Bad numbers last year but I think he’d be worthy of a gamble here.

      1. at this point im not sure of their tactics. I like some of their picks from yesterday, but I figured they would have a couple young kids they had pegged early today. But at this point they either don’t think the young kids are a chance to sign, or they are overcompensating with their draft strategy shift and just don’t want to take any young kids. I guess we will see as the day goes on.

  23. whitesox took a risk on a kid I liked Montes de Oca, a HS pitcher coming off an injury that started throwing at the end of his season and regained his 94-97 stuff. The question I had was if he was signable, I guess they had a number from him.

    1. Once you get to round 11 signability doesn’t matter too much. You should get a few premium HS prospects you think you might be able to sign with leftover draft pool money and then work your way through them and hopefully convince one of them to bite.

      Quite a few of these ‘tough sign’ HS prospects you see go after round 11 in the old system probably would have went around round 4-9 and then a team just ponied up the overslot money… but since you can’t do that anymore and if you draft a player in let’s say round 4 and their draft pool # is $400,000. If you fail to sign that player you subtract $400,000 from your available draft pool.

      So what we see now is teams are huge on pre-draft agreements. They don’t want to ‘waste’ a pick on a player who doesn’t sign because not only do they lose that pick, they lose the money from that pick which can affect the rest of their pool. Better to draft tougher HS signs after round 10 and then try to come up with enough money.

      I think the Phils probably could max out with *maybe* a $1m signing bonus for one kid post round-10 depending on if they could Nola for around $3M and save $300k or so there, pay the 5% penalty and then other savings.

      1. that’s the strategy these days. It really becomes even more dependent on the detailed work and relationships established by our local scouts, and the dispositions and honesty of the kids they are dealing with.

    1. He is also considered virtually unsignable at this point. He probably wants top 2 round money to even consider, and we didn’t save that much in the first 10 rounds to even tempt him.

    1. At this point the Phillies should sign all of their draft picks and we’re thru their 17th round pick. This will probably be something they put out in a blurb “We’re thrilled to have signed all of top-20 round picks and almost our entire draft class. We made a decision to spend and ensure talent gets signed quickly.”

      Which people who only read the people or hear what some talking head on tv says will take as “Phillies did allright.” I’m pretty sure there are going to be some HS guys taken eventually, but the Phillies will be able to spin-off their not signing as just being ‘throw-away’ picks.

        “What expenses are covered under the Plan?”

        The Club is liable up to the maximum semester allowance for the participant’s cost of tuition, fees, room and board (both housing and meals) and textbooks (not included are computers, calculators or materials other than textbooks) required for the course of study.

        Who is responsible for payment of a participant’s Plan expenses?

        Generally, the original Club that signed the player will be responsible for the payments under the Plan, even if the player plays for different organizations throughout his career.

        Don’t have to worry about paying those pesky rising tuition fees for HS dratees.

  39. I love the Phillies idea. They can sign all of these college players from rounds 11 to 40 for less than 100k. That won’t count against our money. Then we will have 300k to 400k to spend on High Schoolers.

      1. He’s undersized, but he was the ace of IU’s pitching (staff). He was amazing in the CWS last year including a CG SO against Louisville. He just pitched very well and got the W against Stanford, although IU lost the series.

  43. It’s almost like the team is filling out their org. Depth before going for the upside guys here. All these guys drafted today seem like relatively easy signs wo much upside. Only 1 could see being a little challenging is Davis so far.

    1. There will be no upside guys who are actually signed. The point is to draft them in the early teens, before the other teams draft them. The best and those thought most likely to be signable will be drafted first. When you get into the twenties, you are into a combination of dreck, unsignable and unsignable dreck. If you want a high ceiling HS kid with a reasonable enough probability of success to be worth a large bonus, you take them in rounds 1, 2, or 3 where the pick is protected and there is no harm if they don’t sign. If you want a moderately high ceiling HS kid, whom you may not be able to sign, you load up on several in the low teens and see if you can get one to sign for the $ you have, knowing that if you don’t sign any of them there is no harm done and they didn’t decrease your draft bonus allocation. As you go through the teens to draft the HS kids in decreasing level of interest. Into the twenties and beyond, it’s over.

Long term, this is not how you build a franchise. Lord, am I crazy to see ed wade as being the better gm? At least Sixers and eagles are well run and the town isn’t full of geriatric owners who don’t know a baseball from a basketball.

        1. Ed Wade is a good GM. IMO above and beyond RAJ by FAR. He built the core that ruled the NL East from 2007-2011. His issue was he never really had the money to do to much so he had to build a team w him farm system. The fruits of his labor showed in that above stretch. The Astros should be decent as well in the near future, a team that Wade built as well.

  45. Arizona finally took Bukauskas off the board. He sent letters out to all 30 teams letting them know that he is for sure heading to UNC in the fall which is why he lasted outside of the first 2 rounds.

  52. I liked the kid Weigl from juco that the brewers took this round. He has a good arm, reminded me of Kenny giles. I was hoping the phils would take a chance on him.

  54. Cubs took Gilliam this round, Georgia HS OF that was reclassified from junior to Sr late this season and made eligible for the draft. I don’t think he had any major college commitment, would have been a top few round talent that could have been a chance to sign one.

    Not a sexy draft but a draft that can bring some stability back to the organization.

  71. Why would anyone not be hopeful during or immediately after any draft in any sport? If so called draft experts were right most of the time, they would be drafting for teams, not talking about teams drafting. The fact is, no one is right most of the time when it comes to prospect evaluation or draft strategy.

    Roughly 1/4 of all current NFL players were not drafted. The Superbowl winning Seahawks had over 20 undrafted players on their roster this past year. Those are insanely disproportionate numbers when compared to 7 rounds of drafted players for each team.

    Bottom line is the Phils are trying a different approach. Yes, it does wreak of desperation, but it’s a far cry from toolsy Zach Collier and the rest of the gaggle of garbage we’ve ended up with over the last decade. We won’t be able to judge this draft for quite a while so relax and just root for these guys.

    1. The past criticism has mainly been about taking very raw first rounders. I’m fine with Nola, it’s the rest of the draft that bothers me.

      I don’t disagree with any pick individually, but it’s the overall strategy I don’t like. It’s too extreme. It’s like investing — you want a balanced portfolio.

  83. Hey that Chase Harris kid is gonna turn some heads! I watched him play a few times this year. Lead his conference batting .377 in the top three in the conference in every major category. Plays a terrific outfield doesn’t commit errors and super fast

  87. Question, are the Phillies linked to any of the top international prospects? I’m not personally sure how the international free agent market is shaping up but I would hope that they would take a stab or two at some of the top international talent this year.

    2. Phils have a pretty good size international Pool this year, but I haven’t heard any names that they are linked to like we heard Encarnacion last year. The problem is that the Yankees and a few other teams decided to bust their pools this year in anticipation of the International draft and have already agreed with a lot of the top talent on verbal deals.

    1. who knows at this point. Its late. They might have an inside track at taking a run at these kids, maybe they know something, or maybe they just cant fit any more college Srs into the minor leagues at this point. JUCO kids always have a shot to be signed. This late, im not confident, but they have saved some money hopefully, so maybe one or two of them get tempted to take the money.

    1. answered above. That’s just my opinion though, who knows in reality what kind of pre-draft deals they had with these guys.

    2. Since the Phillies drafted 9 of 10, college guys and the one HS guy already signed, they’ll probably get the full use of their 6.89 million dollar pool. They can go over that figure by 4.9%, so they have at least 340K over what ever they save from the college guys in rounds 1-10.
      If they save 300K on the 1st round pick, coupled with the 2 seniors they drafted in rounds 9 and 10, they’ll probably have at least 800K to spend on the HS guys they picked up late.

        1. If we had 1100k, I would be so excited. First and foremost, I would sign Austin Davis and Brandon Murray. Hopefully only 250k a piece. Then, I would sign other high school or JUCO players. Hopefully sign 3 or 4 of them for 100k. That would make me happy

          1. chances of that being the case are slim to none. I doubt nola takes a cut and the Phillies have always been a team to toe the line since Monty and giles are friends of selig, they almost never go above what they are allowed.

        Maybe MLB should do as the NFL, NBA and NHL do….have limited rounds….say stop at 10 or 15 rounds, the remaining players can be signed as free agents.
        The NFL and NBA use the colleges as their minor leagues for the most part, have the colleges do the same for MLB, but also still have the minors leagues ..
        And once a college junior ‘declares’ for the draft, like they do in the NFL he most stick by it, and not hold his senior year as leverage vs the pro team, ie Ben Wetzler and Jason Monda from last year.
        The 50 round draft from few years ago and now this 40 round just doesn’t seem to worthwhile after abvout 10/15 top picks.
        Just my opinion.

        1. yeah it would involve a complete overhaul of the entire MLB draft and even the minor leagues but I think it would be interesting to think about. I think the way they would have to go is to put an age floor on it and force HS kids into college programs for at least a year. Make kids declare for draft and not go back. It would make college baseball much more competitive and probably much more interesting. Limit it to 15 rounds would be part of it, but if you do that, you need to consolidate the minor leagues because there wouldn’t be enough kids down on the farm to fill all of the teams. So cut it down to 3. Then you also need to incorporate the international kids into it somehow because you would see kids in HS move to latin America so they don’t have to go into the MLB draft. Its a complicated and potentially ugly situation that I don’t see working.

  101. Assuming that we have 400k left from the first 10 rounds to use for rounds 11 to 40 would you throw 200k a piece at Austin Davis and Brandon Murray? Or would either only sign for 100k?

  115. it will take more than 2 to sign murray. can’t see the phils signing anymore than 1 decent flier. the other ones that are being predicted to sign are the jonathan knight types (no disrespect intended here) and hope he is doing well. but he lasted one and one half seasons.
